These classes also still exist at community colleges and vocational schools. Not only that there's YT Univ. It could be a weekend thing or part of a service project. We ABSOLUTELY need trades in our community. It is in OUR hands.

In 2024 they can only blame themselves. My father was a 2 time felon, 38 conviction, possession, possession with intent to sale, braking and entering, burglary, murder, attempted murder (he beat those trials thankfully or I wouldn't have been born), and everything in-between (no weirdo sh_t). Ni__a didn't know how to put the pipe or bottle down. Wild since my grandfather was a Nevada state trooper and my grandmother wasxa charge nurse. Had us homeless in Vegas and San Francisco. Ni__as choices caught up with him in 98... I was 3. His father died 2 weeks after he did to the day. My grandmother died when I was 7. After that apparently we were no longer family to his family 🤷‍♂️. By 8 I was inside an engine, that same year I started carpeting, hanging drywall, mudding and sanding rooms, painting walls, mixing concrete, etc... by the time I was 15 landlords in the neighborhood were coming to me to repair their properties and neighbors weren't taking their cars to the shop. Moved put my mothers at 15 going on 16... haven't looked back since. Some of us make excuses and some of us stfu and go and get it. I agree I wish more folks woukd be self sufficient, but unfortunately we have a real problem in thus country with blaming others for our shortcomings. No one's holding us back but us. If ni__as really wanted to they would.

Of course I always knew what my I was meant to do but I denied it . The trade in creative endeavors opened up a world I never knew, like I can create magic...lol but my Harvard exposure kept mdle in places that when people looked at me they dismissed because they felt oohhh she is an artist. But once I opened my nouth and spoke with my inner voice that only a well seasoned education could give me . The gatekeepers had no chioce but to finally open the golden doors.
Hear me not every one is gifted. You need to have the innate ability for a trade skill. Not everyone can do it

I think it all comes down to effort and who’s willing to do more when I often go to black barbershop they just cut my hair and usually they don’t do detail work or anything , plus sometimes look a bit rundown and it’s always packed waiting an hour for cuts but when I went I started going to Hispanic barbershop and asked for fade some are usually or either a bit more money but they put more effort and detail and I just always felt more satisfied and there shops are always clean and comfortable and they always had someone available to cut my hair especially when I’m on a busy schedule it’s bit more professional to me in my opinion.
I get what umar is saying but if I want better results im going where to it’s more convenient. Our people have the opportunity to compete but question who’s willing to make the first step.

I’m 45 and regret the obvious “student loan debt “ 87k I also went on to get a masters degree. But the point being , I do real estate at the the present! So to save money , I had to teach myself how to do “handyman” work to save money. I do electrical, plumbing, drywall, flooring, cosmetics. . And I realize TRADES ate the wave of the future and present! Those guys make more money and without student loan debt of your 4 year university graduates. It’s not all bad but it’s worth it. Because yes I work in my field of higher learning, but I still see more value and money in the trade! Pulse you can be your own boss .

Pedis can be more time consuming but the average client would spend 90-300 on nails vs 45-75 on a pedi. I do both as more of a spa service to charge more however I respect those that don’t. Why flood your books with the lesser service if you don’t NEED to, keeping the higher ticket from booking ?

1.) before desegregation, most black americans were plumbers, farmers, industrial workers, or trade workers in general, and it stayed that way for a generation after desegregation, look at places like Detroit, Elkhart, IN, and places like that, so to say it changed after desegregation is misinformation.
2.) Bigger issue was offshoring or outsourcing of African American dominated fields to Asia and Latin America because the labor is far cheaper than the wages they had to pay to American citizens (race was not the driving force).
3.) Getting a college education increases earning potential, as well potential to get into positions of power to influence real change, problem is, when we get those positions of power, we are self serving and not looking out for other members of the community.
4.) The invention of the welfare system has done more harm to the African American community than people tend to realize, especially when you look at the fact that people are incentivized to live below the poverty line.
5.) The issue of African American economics is not black and white, no pun intended. It is far more complex than desegregation happened, we went to white colleges and now we’re getting pushed out of fields we once dominated. Factually speaking, an illegal immigrant is far cheaper to hire than an American citizen, they’re treated as machines, and they’re grateful for whatever money they earn. I’m a senior in college doing PreMed, and I have 5 black classmates total in 4 classes of 30-45 students, I’m the only male of the 3 of us. You can’t tell me that race has anything to do with our HIGH drop out rates. Race has nothing to do with the fact that jobs that pay $9hr on the farm are left unfilled while people sit at home unemployed waiting for an opening at the Walmart that pays $15hr. It has to do with the stereotype that black people are lazy and have an attitude problem so they’re a pain to work with, which more times than not, justified or not, we prove them right because the only time there’s ever an outburst
at work, people who are consistently tardy at work, people who catch an attitude when asked to do simple things, it’s us black people. So race is a minuscule factor in the downfall of the black economy, it’s the rotting culture

i feel like this is not only black issue it’s an american issue. people are fed up and would rather not work hard all day to barely survive while people get rich doing nothing special. it’s also an ego thing. In the age of social media and post-globalization there are so many diverse ways of making a living that let us be more ambitious with how we decide to make a living. As someone in college i see a divide in the black community, a small percentage of us (usually born from immigrants) end up pursuing high levels of education (engineering, medicine, law etc), and most pursue regular degrees and some still go into trades/the service industry, but there’s a large part that would rather not work at all while being very materialistic

Yes they are stopping black people from going into trades by keeping the importance and possibility lost on them. There are so many black people kept from trades because they were never actually informed on how valuable, secure, and profitable they are and can be. So many kids resort to robbery, selling drugs, etc. because they don’t even recognize the value of a consistent, needed, reliable trade. Even when they get the money to go to a community college, because they don’t realize the value in it, they don’t even bother to think about going.
