I know this is old but had to come here to say that I watched all three of the irrigation videos. I ordered all of the supplies this week and by noon today I had run enough to drip irrigate 200’ in my beds. We are in a drought and I have been wasting a lot of water with sprinklers. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you for making it so easy to understand. I’m just a girl (65 yo😂) and it could not have been more simple.
Jim, out of all the how-to videos on youtube your three videos on drip irrigation was definitely the best! Thank you for taking your time on explaining each detail and showing the different methods in which the drip irrigation system can be used.
Just a thought, to save water you could run solid line along the shrubs, then use a T coupler to run a looped 1/4 drip tube around each plant. Then it wouldn't wouldn't matter if you had the main line above the slope. More parts and work, but saves water and $ in the long run.
WOW! I'm not even done watching this n you've answering two huge questions I couldn't find addressed anywhere--I looked for two hours! Main one was that I could run the 1/2" line around and loop it right back into a "T" on the supply line. Just so many good pointers and clear to understand! Thank you SO much!
These have been very helpful. I’ve not been able to find the one about hooking up the pots and hanging baskets. That would be a good addition. Maybe at the new house.
I used that exact model of timer for my tiny lawn in Barstow, CA several years ago. It worked on the same set of batteries for years. I even left it in July 2017 and returned in October for a day to find it still in operation, even though nobody had lived in that house for that whole time frame. I think I put it in during the summer of 2015.
I am so glad to see that an irrigation system can be attached to a garden hose instead directly to the hose bib. I want to set up drip irrigation for my raised bed garden area that is several feet away from the house with the lawn in between. I can't have a permanent line going from the house to the garden because it will get run over by the lawnmower. It looks like I can attach a garden hose with a quick connect to my hose bib and run the garden hose to the garden and attach the drip irrigation system to the other end. When it is time to mow I can disconnect the garden hose from the hose bib and temporarily place it inside the garden.
Again, loving these videos. Where were you a year and a half or so? I've figured out the same but it has taken a while. Thank you for sharing your expertise!
Hi, thanks a lot for your informational videos. At 8:50 sec of this video you mentioned about another video where you would show integration of drip system with existing sprinkler system, could you please point me to that video ? I couldn't find it, Thank you.
Hi Jim! Thank you so much for explaining drip irrigation and all the parts including layout! How many gallons per hour do you water for smaller flowering plants versus newly planted shrubs or established evergreen shrubs?
Is there a certain size emitter you can recommend for kinds of plants according to maybe size. Tomatoes, sweet potatoes, peppers, corn, so forth? Don't want to wind up with a lot of the wrong size. Thanks
great video sir. Question! when ur circling the tubes around the trees and blueberry plants, are you not wasting water at large bare spots? Why not use solid tubes and poke holes where u need it. Seems like waste of water.
Hey Jim, I've been binging your videos as I prepare for my first drip irrigation installation in my back yard. Maybe you answered this already, I have a question. When installing drip line on a hill, will the pressure at the bottom of the hill be much greater than at the top of the hill? Can this be a problem, or is it usually too small a difference to matter much? If you regulate down to 25 psi, and then run line up a big hill, is it possible there won't be enough pressure at the top? Thanks! Keep up the helpful videos!
Man, these videos are great but I found them too late! If you see this, I’ve got some questions. What goes behind your decision making when deciding between 1/4 inch drip tubing and 1/2 inch? I’ve seen people use the 1/4 inch to circle around trees and shrubs or just do grid style with 1/2 inch. Never seen them loop shrubs with 1/2 inch like you did, very innovative! Also, I’m having trouble finding exact guidelines on how to know when your space is too big, and may need to tap into another hose bib. It seems like you’ve covered quite a bit of space with one source, for now.
Love the video series. One issue I am having is I get leaks at the swivel connections - on the timer and the hose connection. I do use Teflon tape. Anyone have a solution?
What are your settings on "how long" and "how often" this system is watering? My irrigation is buried under mulch as I used it for my flower beds. I'm trying to figure out how much is a good amount of water in the 24 period. The flower bed is in full sun in NC.
For Green giant arborvitae (planted in fall this is their first warm season) should I be using that 18" hole spacing? Also, should I be looking in drip line or root ball? I guess for my 3' trees the football and drip line were similar. I planted them mounded a bit so don't want to water too far from rootball for fear the roots have grown in that space yet? I also want them to search for water on their own and grow into native soil. Your advice would be appreciated!
Thx Jim. Beautiful and very helpful video. I will install drip irrigation for my garden. A few years ago my Gardner put drip irrigation just for one party of my side yard. But now some of the holes are closed. So water comes a lot from the open holes. Any solution for fix this area? And anything I can do for prevent this problem in my new area?
Thank you Jim. You didn’t address how many feet you can run based on size of 17mm etc. when you attach the drip with holes ever 6” how many of those and what length. At what point have you reached effectiveness of system and need a separate main supply line? Thank you.
Have you noticed any difference in the amount of water the plants at the beginning of the line receive compared to the plants at the end of the line? How long are your rows?
I have always used the emitters in containers and the drip tape or drip tube in beds. I like to wet the whole area around the plant. I feel like if I water directly at the base of the plant that it would have no reason to root into the surrounding soil. I have dug up plants that are on the lawn irrigation and they are just like the day they were put in the ground.
while this is a good sort of 101 on drip irrigation, one important omission is that while it's true, drip is very flexible but ... water pressure is finite. You can't just run endless amounts of tubing off one source cause eventually you 'll run out of water pressure and all your 1 gallon/hour (or whatever) emitters will emit ... fractions of that. So you probably might want to add a postscript on zoning.
LOL.... reminds me that in a former life, a customer purchased 3 @ 100 ft X 1/2" soaker hose, hooked them end to end -- and then returned them as defective because water did not make it to the end......
Hi- love your videos. I'm doing an area 6x20'. I need to do drip on each single plant. I also have a row of plants that need water. Should I hook up a soaker off a drip line for the row of plants? All the other plants are scattered about with no consistent spacing. I was thinking that I could also add a plastic Y connector to have 2 main hoses to run my drip lines. Your help would be wonderful.
Awesome video. Question if you can help answer. I cut the PVC pipe in my sprinkler box and I plan on using the now empty unused valve to run a drip line to another area in my yard. How many inches should I bury the pipe? Also, any recommendation on how to connect they pipe to the valve? I know pressure is obviously something to be aware of. I'm intimidated by the work but I want to do it.
I just watched your three videos and wished I had seen them before taking on a similar project. Thank you for the very detailed explanation of things. I will not be going back and fixing some of the things I didn't do correct. Question: Is there any loss in pressure the further the lines go from the timer or main hose? I have some droppers that don't seem to want to push much water out at times. Also, can I just connect the water pressure regulator on the faucet first and then attach the timer? Thanks!
Very helpful; thanks! I am on a hillside and have terraces. I also have a lot of plants/beds on the other side of my driveway. I would like to get a spigot on that side, plus on the two terraces that don't have one. Dumb question, but I don't know who to call to have that installed. Would that be a plumber? I know areas of the country can be very different, but what do you figure is reasonable to pay for additional spigots? In total, I'd at least like three, possibly four, more spigots.
Hello thanks for video, a lot of information But, when there’s a distance between one AREA to the next where nothing is planted, do u allow water to still come out?
No, I use the solid pipe to run close to the plants and then start the drip pipe. There is some space between those shrubs, but more are going in soon. That is the reason I didn't switch back and forth in the shrub section. Good question. Thanks for asking.
Great video! thanks for sharing, I was thinking about making a system like this also for my pepper raised beds. Have you ever noticed a issue with any of the emitters in the tubing getting clogged up since they would be laying in the soil dripping?
@@JimPutnam how did feces get involved, lol. Are you pooping out back? I do it too sometimes when I am lazy, but I always forget about needing tp... Good work btw
Would be better to not explain what you did but actually just do it and explain at each step. I know you are trying to help but you need to actually do it one step at at time

You just took an ominous task that I was dreading and gave me the confidence to get this done. Last year I will ever forget to water
Jim, watched your 3 videos on drip irrigation , I will do my system this weekend. I learned a lot. Thank you
Awesome. Glad to help
Great video series on irrigation! Very informative and has given me a boost of confidence in installing an irrigation system in my garden.

Thank you for the three videos. They are very well presented and very informative. Thank you
Great ideas as I am reworking my drip system for new plants.

Or bury a hose under your lawn. I did underground sprinkling with buried garden hose. And ran water to my garden bed with buried garden hose.

Is there a benefit to looping the wraps back to the connectors vs dead ending them?

What is the the longest length of half inch pipe that you installed? I see you have a very large yard like I do
Will you drain water out of drip irrigation system before a freeze
How do you keep the batteries and timer unit working when it is placed on the ground? I've had two stop working because batteries get wet.
Thanks to share
Hi Jim what do you think of using a small black soaker hose to loop around the perennials?

Would you recommend using the 1/2 inch emitter tubing to irrigate a row of thornless raspberry and blackberry canes?
Why not use an umbrella bubbler or emitters at the base of the bushes instead of wrapping them in pipe?

Jim, do you happen to use injection fertilizing through your drip tubes? If so, could we get a video on how you do it?
With the clay soil and using 1 gopher emitters how long and often do your run the system for perennials and shrubs
When do you decide to use emmitters off of a black tubing to a plant/shrub vs. using the red holed tubing around plants/shrubs?
