    Mountains bigger for sure, but those are pretty cool mountains down there. But we should get you over here to the PNW one of these days. You’re without a doubt the most free flowing professional pilot on UA-cam. Never let anything get to you no matter how big the other egos are of anyone around you, you’re just humble as can be, packing the biggest set on here. Thanks for your video as always.

    Am I the only one that finds it amazing how far we have come as far as technology is concerned? SteveO is in the sky, at an altitude and temperatures we wouldn't normally be able to even survive in, sitting comfortably in his seat, at speeds we were never meant to travel at, navigating his way with pinpoint accuracy across distances we would previously have spent weeks to traverse, at a time of night we aren't naturally equipped to be able to see anything, dodging storms far beyond his vision, avoiding other aircraft, landing safely at a predestined destination within a few feet and a few minutes of time calculated at departure. Incredible if you ask me!

      It’s pretty incredible... Even traveling with a smart phone is incredible to me . I’m 53 and remember traveling as a young guy using guide books and timetables. Now I can travel the world with all the information I need in the palm of my hand. Booking things , doing banking, using maps and GPS with pinpoint accuracy . I’m with you it’s amazing

      @@markthomas6045 I’m with you. I’m 51, got my licence in 1993, now fly an advanced glass cockpit Cirrus SR22 G5 and use an iPad for flight planning. However, I still carry the paper enroute charts for the planned flight, a watch, a magnetic compass, understand magnetic deviation, cross track drift and am able to reposition myself on the paper map at a moments notice. I Have had IPads “go dark” on me and always include standby instrument manoeuvres on my annual instrument check ride. Even modern gps enabled navigation is still based on classic time - distance - track principles between a known point and a destination point.

      Great to see there are others out there that continue to be amazed at the advances in technology. I work in technology and am just learning aviation. I'm seeing just how far we have come and I try not to take it for granted.

    I noted the comment about haze. at about 12:45. That is so typical of flying in east TN. We used to call it the East TN VOR... when you're headed home and begin to see the haze, you're close to East TN. The haze is one reason they're the Great SMOKY Mountains.

    30 years ATC retired.
    Regarding no flight plan, if you requested it more than it think 30 minutes or so before your “P” time them system would not have your flight plan available. The controller would have to amend the “P” time to the current time then the strip with all the info would print out and enable it to be activated in the NAS. This MAY be why the controller was unable to pull it up in the system. If not too busy and not a lot of fixes a controller can put a flight plan in pretty quickly.

    Random question. Why do you put the landing gear up almost immediately once in the air? I would think you'd want it down until you know "you're good", just in case you had to put 'er back down, no?

    • @jamiehickey4808
      @jamiehickey4808 3 роки тому +1

      Pretty common to bring the gear up once you establish positive rate, so basically once you see the plane is ascending, and your instruments indicate it's climbing, you can hear him mention that when he lifts off, gives 2 positive rate affirmations. Once you're in the air, you're well past the point of no return anyway, so if anything were to happen, having gear up is the best situation because of needing all the airspeed you can get, and wouldn't want the gear down bleeding off speed.
      Commercial jets do it too, once they're up and climbing, gear comes up.

    Maybe one day you can go through all the in's and out's of how the turbine works and over speed etc and special modes of operation on the TBM.

    • @David-zj3bp
      @David-zj3bp 3 роки тому +2

      The hot gases from combustion hit the turbine blades causing it to spin. The turbine(s), located in the rear, is connected to the compressors which are in the front, near the intake of the engine. The more fuel that is added the more combustion is created. The turbine spins faster causing the compressor to also spin faster and in-taking more air. I believe over speed applies to the big turbofan engines. When the pilots push the throttle too fast/slam the throttle. Causes the compressor fans in front of the engine to spin too fast, faster than they should be spinning at that time. It's equivalent to flooring the gas pedal in car, except the consequences are more serious in an airplane. They suggest gradually increasing the throttle. Also the limit of propellers, helicopter rotors, and turbofan engines is the tip of the blades should not reach the speed of sound. That's the limit. And the turbines can't exceed a certain ITT (*Interstage Turbine Temperature. They used to call it TIT- Turbine Inlet Temperature). It has to stay within a certain temperature range. Kind of like a car engine, it can't run too hot, will overheat and stop producing power. Can also ruin or damage the engine.

    • @cirrusflyerh2843
      @cirrusflyerh2843 3 роки тому

      @@David-zj3bp combination of over temperature and centrifugal force from spinning results in the Interstage Turbine Blades “ growing / stretching” which can result in turbine blade tip “scrubbing” against the turbine throat walls. NOT a good day for a pilot.

    Question: I thought the TBM cruised over 300 knots. So why is 170 knots about as fast as it is going to go on this flight?

    • @jamiehickey4808
      @jamiehickey4808 3 роки тому

      Once you're above a certain altitude you stop reading the speed in knots because of the air density changing and thus making the aircraft fly faster at lower speed indications, and instead read it in mach speed, which is infinitely more accurate. 170 knots at FL300 is going to be cruise speed for the plane because of that.

      Honestly don’t think this was a big deal since he was really wanting the other plane to update.

    You're not supposed to say "any traffic in the area please advise" it's pointless, they're supposed to advise anyway. And the AIM advises against it

    • @BelowMinimums
      @BelowMinimums 3 роки тому

      @Daniel If you read my comment you would understand what im saying. By a new pilot making a self announcement any pilots in the area are supposed to advise. Therefore, the "any traffic in the area please advise call" is pointless. Also, the AIM 4-1-9(g)(1) advises against stating it for my reasoning above.

    When you are up in that part of Tennessee you are not far from our family cabin in North Carolina. It's above Boone in Ash County. Ask my niece Bryah about it. She flies as a passenger with you out of Florida.
