Tackling mature topics like this is part of what makes this show so awesome. =) I had wondered how the Pillars would take being brought to the modern world after a thousand years in limbo. Well, now we have the answer, and it was heartwarming to see what they’ve all been up to and how they’re adjusting, since we got to see Star Swirl again this season as well. Flash Magnus is a drill sergeant in the Royal Guard, Mistmane’s a landscape artist in the Crystal Empire, Somnambula’s a motivational speaker in her namesake town, Mage Meadowbrook has turned her home into a pharmacy/clinic, and Stygian’s become an author. Unfortunately, the odd one out is Rockhoof. His talents seem more of a hindrance than a help in modern times, and he hasn’t fully adjusted yet. He has the heart and soul of a true hero, like when he thought the school was in danger, but there’s a lot that he’s unfamiliar with, and coupled with his boisterousness and strength, it doesn’t always lead to good results, whether it’s archeology, teaching, odd jobs around Ponyville, or navigating a ship by the stars’ positions today. Seeing how well his friends were doing didn’t do much to bolster his mood either, though Twilight and Applejack were only trying to help him. It’s a harsh and relatable feeling, seeing the world evolve around you and feeling like you don’t have a place in it anymore... It got so bad that Rockhoof wanted to be turned to stone like Discord, feeling like he’s only of worth as a piece of Equestrian history. In other words, he was contemplating suicide, something you wouldn’t expect a kid’s show to touch upon, normally...Naturally, Twi was strongly opposed to the idea, as anyone would be, but after being unable to convince him, she felt she had no choice, though she was firmly resolved to only let it last until she could think of something else. She was out of options, and had a difficult choice to make... Thank God for Yona. She’d already grown fond of Rockhoof for his yak-like qualities, and when she found out what he was planning, she went to convince him not to, showing him her essay for class, talking about how meeting her new friends helped her adjust to life in Ponyville, and how she wants to do the same for Rockhoof. He was so touched, he decided to finish his story about defeating an Ursa Major for the class. When Twilight saw what a great storyteller he is, she appointed him Equestria’s Keeper of Tales, convincing him that his wealth of knowledge from his time makes him far more of use alive than as a statue, and that he shouldn’t throw his life away when he has so much to give. 30:48 - 32:16 Maybe when you are turned to stone you are asleep but you retain the information of everything that's happening around you. Kind of like how when someone is sleeping in the real world you might dream about the events going on around you. Well, I didn't have to wait too long. Yeah, I loved this episode. Rockhoof's story is one that many can relate to, even if young children wouldn't understand the deeper message of the episode. So glad they got the others pillars in, too. I liked Yona before this, but I absolutely adore her now. This was truly a shining moment for her. Her admiration for Rockhoof was just the sweetest thing I've seen in a long time.
Yona to me helped Rockhoof realize his importance in the grand scheme of things and Yona helped put him on the right track and seeing her tell her story in front of Rockhoof was the most cutest thing I have ever seen. When I first watched this Episode I completely lost it when Yona pulled out the Mini Shovel and it was at this moment when I realized that Yona isn't a brute as people make her out to be but instead she has a heart of gold and is kind and loving to those she respects or loves. Her admiration to Rockhoof is commendable and she never gave up on him. When she heard about Rockhoof preparing to be placed in Stone Sleep you can hear and feel her despair and agony and that she finally had found someone close to her thinking about contemplating suicide and if I was Yona I would have done everything in my power into keeping him alive.
On the 'revisionism' aspect, it's Discord, he could be A: Lying and just knew by peaking at the script. B: Only 'conscious' because, as noted, Discord. C: Who know what else... It's Discord
Even though Rockhoof enjoyed telling stories off his past heroic deeds, he pulled it off in a way where he doesn't really seem like he was being boastful or bragging, unlike how Trixie, or should i say, "The Great and Powerful Trixie" might seem if she did it, despite that it still would feel very different than how it would feel before she reformed, in a good way.

Following after the return of Star Swirl a few episodes back, I’ve wanted to know how the other Pillars(including Stygian) were fairing in the modern world and I couldn’t have been more excited for this episode! The inclusion of the Young Six(especially Yona) made it even better than I thought. This episode has made a good impression on me in the best way, therefore being one of the most interesting stories that S8 had to offer.
I assumed that Discord was fully conscious during his stone sleep just because, you know, he's Discord, and even in that form he still kinda does what he wants and will absolutely spy to gain an advantage if he can. I didn't think of it as being what you described at all.
The fact that they put some mature and dark stuff in this episode is what makes this a great episode. I can hardly wait to see you react to episode 22!
I don't think that the "stone sleep spell" would leave Rockhoof, or any other mortal creature, conscious during imprisonment. I think that Discord remained awake only because he's an immortal spirit that never sleeps. Btw, I'm surprised that you never questioned how Twilight was intending to cast that spell without retrieving the elements of the rest of the mane six. I'm sure it's probably doable through alicorn-level magic, without elemental augmentation, when the subject is a mere mortal... but I was still surprised that you didn't bring that up.
Well, I mean, to me there's nothing suggesting that only the elements could cast the stone sleep spell. I didn't see a need to question anything, because this is a magical world. If they say the spell exists on its own for use on mortals, then who am I to disagree? XD
Well do keep in mind that Indiana Jones is a professor of archaeology, which is more in line with what was going on at the village dig site. Daring Do is more an analog to Lara Croft, and would be more appropriate appearing in a scenario involving an ancient tomb or temple than a simple excavation of a village. Also, the Indy pony re-appears here after his first appearance in the Season 7 finale when AJ recovered Rockhoof's shovel, and even included a rolling boulder scare which completely tied in with Jones.
Who put ponies in my Shovel Knight? This episode is just fantastic. So much going on. I hope you rewatched it plenty because there are a lot of good lines you might have missed. Not that I blame you, its pretty hard not to talk over anything when the entire episode has so much greatness in it.
loved your reaction luffy to the washouts and to this one awesome also I would love to see flash magnus and spitfire meet together they act pretty much the same way both brave and a sporty personality
I loved this episode it was so good it tackled a big topic and it has a lot of great things with the other pillars. It was also very well done and interesting. Rockoff is great I love Yona she got great development. Starlight is my favourite pony but Twilight is my favourite of the main 6 and I will always love the main 6. Do you have a favourite of the main 6?
Speaking of how to train your dragon.... I am assuming ya watched both the movies, and I really want to you upload an reaction to the 3rd movie when it comes out 2019 😂
Everyone is so busy going "hurr durr the stone sleep spell is like suicide" in every single review comment section (even though it's like cryogenic suspension, because it is temporary and reversible, and thus is NOT suicide at all) that they've failed to comment on the fact that the stone sleep spell DOES NOT EXIST. Celestia and Luna did not petrify Discord with a spell, they nuked him with the Elements of Harmony and THOSE petrified him.
Yeah, odds are there's spells for turning someone to stone too. If Twilight can even turn non-living objects to living beings (such as during the Every Little Thing She Does episode) it seems likely that she could have access to spells that could turn Rockhoof to stone. Especially since it's not like Twilight's even been like "hey guys here's every spell I'm capable of using" then gotten updates anytime she learned new ones, so there's that to think about. As far as plot holes go, I don't think that's TOO big a deal, since it makes sense that Twilight's powerful enough to turn ponies to stone if she wanted to.
Even though it wasn't actual suicide, Rockhoof wanting to be turned to stone can still be close enough to be like wanting suicide, and it's a good kid-friendly way of showing it in this show. For one thing, he NEVER even hinted that he'll want to return to normal, so that all but applies he wanted to be a stone forever. This is how a suicidal person would think, if they had this option open for them From the way he was talking, if Twilight did turn him to stone, and later reversed the spell without a reason for him to stay, he'll just demanded her to turn him back to stone again, and they're been right back there they started: with Rockhoof telling Twilight to turn him to stone, with Twilight yelling "No!"
Yona has officially made it to this show's list of precious cinnamon rolls that must be protected at all costs :3

You mean an analogy. Which is essentially true, but it would've been good to see Daring Do is still out there in a follow-up episode/appearance.
Banana ice cream with chocolate chips and reese's cups mixed in. That's my favorite
STOP CALLING IT "STONE SLEEP" DARNIT!
lol
Why? Is it because you don't actually fall asleep and you're still fully conscious?
@@luffyiscool yes. That's what we believed for so long, it feels weird to think any differently. 😅
9:46 And that is exactly what DWK said in his Totally Legit Recap of this episode
Can we just talk about the fact that this guy wanted to commit the pg version of suicide? Man mlp is getting dark.
DW it’s always been dark ever since S4.
This season has definitely been a mature one, I'm loving this serious direction.
Watches Washouts reaction before bed, wakes up to this one. Good stuff
I'm in love with Somnambula
Dat voice.
Her voice is hypnotically alluring. I just love how she said, "Focus on my voice". Like it's possible to do anything else when she's talking!
Egyptian voice
Indeed Somnambula has one of the most beautiful voices in the entire series.
Somnambula is sexy. It helps that her voice is so beautiful.
Its a shame Rockhoof basically lost almost everything. At least everything worked out in the end for him though.
Also, Somnambula is luff
It is really weird to have some silly episodes mixed with some sudden mature episodes like this. This season is just as ambitious as season 5.
Who put ponies in my Shovel Knight?
This episode is just fantastic. So much going on. I hope you rewatched it plenty because there are a lot of good lines you might have missed. Not that I blame you, its pretty hard not to talk over anything when the entire episode has so much greatness in it.
Good reaction, good episode.
loved your reaction luffy to the washouts and to this one awesome also I would love to see flash magnus and spitfire meet together they act pretty much the same way both brave and a sporty personality
I found this episode to be just alright.
As far as the mane six goes, it's probably Twilight.
The direction for her character has been damn solid for the past two seasons.
Amazing episode Rockhoof wow I feel bad for him and my origins descended from one of those was Scandinavian blood (Norway area)
17:57 - 18:00
Wow, for a moment there I thought you were a Kingdom Hearts fan XD
I know that you've already seen the rest of the season, but have you watched the Hearths Warming special yet?
Not yet, but I'll be getting to it as soon as the finale is edited.
On the plus side, you'll be seeing it closer to Christmas than any of us did. =D
Speaking of how to train your dragon.... I am assuming ya watched both the movies, and I really want to you upload an reaction to the 3rd movie when it comes out 2019 😂
Oh. And Ralph breaks the internet too
No luffy Kool aid not wreck it ralph almost XD
Everyone is so busy going "hurr durr the stone sleep spell is like suicide" in every single review comment section (even though it's like cryogenic suspension, because it is temporary and reversible, and thus is NOT suicide at all) that they've failed to comment on the fact that the stone sleep spell DOES NOT EXIST. Celestia and Luna did not petrify Discord with a spell, they nuked him with the Elements of Harmony and THOSE petrified him.
Yeaaaah, that is a bit of a plot hole.
It’s not that hard to believe they’re be an actual spell to turn things to stone. There’s a spell to turn things into oranges for crying out loud.
Maybe the Elements of Harmony casts a spell that turned him to stone?
This is how a suicidal person would think, if they had this option open for them
From the way he was talking, if Twilight did turn him to stone, and later reversed the spell without a reason for him to stay, he'll just demanded her to turn him back to stone again, and they're been right back there they started: with Rockhoof telling Twilight to turn him to stone, with Twilight yelling "No!"
Your most recent one got blocked
Episode 22 is in full working order again!
Cheers to Hasbro for a very prompt response.
