As someone who teaches jazz guitar on UA-cam I might be a little biased but I think it isn’t so much learning jazz on youtube but more what you are learning. The wealth of information can lead to being able to find almost anything but also poses the danger of students spreading theirselves too thin and doing too much - you are right about there being too much being a con. So they might be working on theory, substitutions, walking bass lines but get to a gig and be surprised that everyone has tunes memorized and they don’t, or someone calls a tune in a different key and they don’t know what to do (or take out their phone and transpose the changes there). I don’t have a ton of videos or anything since teaching on youtube is a hobby but I think that is very important and try to emphasize things that are practical. You’re also correct that having a bunch of different sources can be bad because you will have people emphasizing different things and sometimes they might emphasize things that are important to them as a more advanced player but will not be useful for a student on youtube and where they are at the moment. That is one thing I really respect about some great players like Peter Bernstein because you will always see them emphasizing those important things. Memorize tunes, don’t forget the melody while soloing, 12 keys etc. Anyway, great idea for a video here and you presented it well. Some of this could even be applied to jazz education overall and not just to learning on youtube.

Your absolutely right Brent......lots of information to checkout; however, I get the most success by buying & investing in My education. For example, 30 steps to Learning Jazz Course is an invaluable tool for learning tunes, and how/what to practice

I’ve experienced all of the PROS = CONS you discussed since I started studying piano about 2 years ago. I also have taken lessons from a teacher in person as you discuss. I think it has probably been good to go through this because I’ve been able to see what’s involved in the process and distill it down to the few OnLine instructors that I’m most happy with as well as discovering the methods that work best for me. Some are free, and some I’ve purchased. And believe it or not, your LJS podcast and other material made the cut 😀. So did Aimee Nolte, the JazzAdvice channel, and Kent Hewitt. I do still look at other online instruction, but not as much. For me, learning piano at my age is difficult, but I now believe I’m on the right “course”.

Here is my own experience. I used to go from video to video, podcast to podcast aimlessly and not getting anywhere. It was also immensely overwhelming. I didn't know what to practice. I finally bit the bullet and bought Brent's 30 Steps program and I am finally moving forward consistently because I know WHAT to practice. And because I paid money for it, I am trying to get "my money's worth" by actually practicing. I highly recommend the program, and no, I did not get anything from Brent to say this.
Interestingly, now that I have a better sense of what my trajectory is, it is easier for me to discern which videos and podcasts are actually useful to me. One channel I find particularly helpful (in addition to Brent's) is Ruslan Sirota's because he discusses HOW to practice something, in very concrete terms, in some of his videos (e.g. his How to Improvise over Chord Changes video).

I think the biggest con is the lack of individual teaching. Somebody that can see what you're playing and that can tell you what you should practice on our improve at.

Fair point! Important to get some musical “doctors checkups” from time to time

I must say that I have learned more from UA-cam than from my music teachers... master classes from Dave Liebman, Wynton Marsalis and Bill Evans among others are available to everybody who speaks English with very important information. There are also channels like this one, Neff music.com, jazzduets.com, better Sax. Com with tons of downloadable information and practice sheets. alltogether with some play alongs from people like Bob mintzer, Jamie Aebersold or Jim Snidero make a simple and entertaining way of learning jazz in my case. I thank them all for those gifts 🙏
