  • Building on the success of their Clarity Vx noise reduction plug-in, Waves have just released Clarity Vx DeReverb and Clarity Vx DeReverb Pro. Powered by a Neural Network, the plug-ins are able to reduce and remove reverb from both dialogue and sung vocals. In this video, our Post Production Expert Paul Maunder, checks it out...
Find out more on the Production Expert blog: www.pro-tools-expert.com/prod...
Disclaimer: This video was created using a pre-release version of Clarity Vx DeReverb (and PRO), some of the Neural Networks shown are yet to be released. (June 2023)

Thank you for the video 🙏🏼 I bought it but I don’t have the Noise reduction and singing 2 presets 😢 it just shows dialogue 1 & 2 and Singing 1

I'll always enjoy the shootouts you do! But I imagine you'll have your work cut out for you in the coming months and more AI/machine learning plug-ins get expanded. There is so much happening in such a short time.

Like some of the other de-verb plugins out there, it seems fine with big verbs with high pre delays, but in smaller spaces with short pre-delays and awful resonant frequencies, it struggles (e.g. the 4th and 5th clips you treated). Will be passing on this as it doesn't seem to do anything that Izotope and Descript don't already do. Thanks for the vid!

Also, like other dereverbers, it works best on close mic’d sources. If someone is far from the mic (you know, when you really need the plugin) it doesn’t work as well as I was hoping. Still, I’m not sure who could do better.

@MattDavid Have you gotten good results from iZotopes DeReverb and if so with what kind of reverb? I am curious.

@@alexandereditsvideo it's really subjective, it handles some stuff quite well, and other times you think it should help and it barely does anything. That's why I think it's good to have a few options to cover most bases.

@MattDavid Yeah, I been stockin' my "plugin toolbox" for awhile now and seems to me, depending on the job, I might reach for one tool or another. It is good to have more than one tool in your shed.

Blimey! I'm sold on this plugin. Just have to have it. What else next!?

    Shootout yes!!!
I have several dereverb plugins and I think Clarity is the most powerful by far. Not always the most transparent.
Even in the examples you just did, I could hear artifacting. It’s hard yo know how well it would work in a mix. I do think it’s possible to get excellent results from the plugin though.
I also use it within RX help save processing power within Pro Tools.

I had the same feeling with the Clarity Vx noise reduction plugin at first, as well... but I have questions, and Waves is not known for updating their plugins over time for anything other than operating system updates - by which I mean no UI improvements, and no improvements under the hood to make them better.

    • @alexandereditsvideo

And by the way, transparency is the goal. As a dialogue editor for film and television your goal is to make speech sound as natural as it can be. This garbled artefacting has no place in what I do, and anything that gets in the way of the movie has no place there and needs to be gone. Editing is the invisible art and I think there's virtue in that.

@@alexandereditsvideo Again I agree. I work on a lot of documentaries and often the sound can be dreadful, sometimes it's like walking a tightrope tying to fix major problems while maintaining transparency.
Have you tried Accentize's DeRoom Pro? It isn't as "powerful" as Clarity but it is more transparent.

@@MidnightMiik I'm aware of it but haven't had time to play around with and test it yet, but I will, I've heard it's good. I held off on giving Waves more of my money because I already have the Acon Digital Deverberate plugin and the whole Acoustica app, and based on the results of the shootout of Deverb plugins Paul & Production Expert did, that one was the clear winner. Waves is playing catch-up.

    • @alexandereditsvideo

@@MidnightMiik And to your first point I can say this: there are limits to how much we can "fix it in post", and for feature films you often can and have to bring the (professional) actors back to re-record their dialogue when the on-set audio can't be saved, which is known as ADR (Automated Dialogue Recording). But for documentaries? Well that's damn near impossible! Walking a tightrope indeed...

I am curious and I bought the original clarity pro but honestly after waves recent "hickup" I'm actively looking for alternatives for everything...I don't feel I can trust them as a company anymore which is sad after 20+ years of being their customer

Well, Acon Digital Deverberate did quite well in the blind listening shootout Paul did a couple of months back, check that out, test it, and tell us your experience.
