Syphon Filter Speedrun in

- Played on Bizhawk (PS1 emulator with similar load times).
PAL version (which runs marginally faster than NTSC due to not waiting for Vsync)
Time from Game Start to when the final cutscene starts playing.
Real-time World Record as of 10/30/2023. No deaths, messy Stronghold 2. Would be roughly 57:4x on Playstation 2 with Fast Disc Speed. Pretty solid, can still bring it down more. -- Watch live at / baronhaynes
Since I know it's likely to be puzzling: at 32:09 I throw a gas grenade despite having already killed the scientist, because the grenade glitch defaults to standard grenades *until* you've used a gas grenade in that level. I was thrown off by an extra guard spawning near the test subject and wanted to do my usual strats rather than improvise, which didn't work out very well, as I missed the grenade glitch setup anyway.
When your parents allowed you to play the console for just one hour...
Dude, this is insane.
I love this game..way better than today games
yuip i miss that time i was playing a lot
I used to love this game probably my favorite ps1 game
Congrats on the sub-hour club! One day I hope to join you there.
One of my favourite ps1 games ever
I like the way you speedrun Rhoemer fight 😎
OMG MAN My Childhood game
You beat Valk. Congratz.
3:03 lol taking the other door
43:21 That was a close call, couple frames late, the run is dead.
My eyes went dinner-plate wide and stayed that way until I hit the checkpoint lmao
As would be Lian lol
A walk thru the museum with gabe.
nice watch used to love that game
At 20:48, how did you obtain a grenade? I'm totally lost.
So, at 20:37, you can see me equip the C4 charge, which is a level-specific item. If you swap from certain level-specific items like this (e.g. the keycard in Pharcom Expo, the viral antigen in Stronghold) to a 2-handed automatic weapon during a roll or a fall, the game will attempt to equip both at the same time. If you then fire the weapon in manual aim, Gabe will throw a grenade as soon as you come back out of it. What I think is happening is that the level-specific items occupy the same ID slot in the inventory. You can get grenades and gas grenades this way in levels that don't normally have them, and use as many as you want, with the limitation of having to shoot the combined weapon in manual aim to throw them. Swapping to another weapon fixes the glitch, but you can get it again with the same setup.
The input for setting this up is kind of awkward: with C4 equipped, hold select to keep the weapon swap screen open, start a running roll, and tap R2 enough times to switch to the automatic weapon before the roll finishes.
What exploit is being accomplished by constantly switching weapons? Is it a speed boost? Iframes?
Looks like a reload exploit.
Seems like it's just a fidget
It saves a very small amount of time, I think for every 30 seconds of weapon cycling while running, it saves about 1 second. I'm cautious how often I do it, because it gets exhausting when doing attempts for hours, and for short distances it could disrupt my timing. It's one of those things I wish wasn't faster, because it's annoying to try and optimize it, lol
Glad GDQ finally let you run the game.
That was me, actually, who ran it for GDQ Hotfix. It was a lot of fun. That's probably as close to the main event as I'll ever get. Tried and failed on nine different occasions. Baron's work and research, along with Valkyrie, helped make it possible.
@@proa007 My apologies. I got everyone mixed up. I try using some of these tricks and end up dying a lot hehe.
@@shindukess All good. It's all about practice and repetition. I haven't really implemented some of the newer tricks in my runs, but I've also taken a major backseat from that in general.
Wild
20:18 . . . what did you do there in the menu?
On the approach to this fuel tank, I look to see if Gabrek is approaching the corner, as he can be aggro'd by hearing enemy gunshots or seeing you as you come down the corridor. If that happens, it's very hard to kill him while also dodging the enemy wave that spawns nearby. So as soon as I tag the fuel tank, the game checkpoints me and I go into the menu and load to the nearest checkpoint, which I just hit. It costs about 5 seconds, but it resets the guard positions and I can take Gabrek out without being shot by the very difficult guards in this level.
@@Baronhaynesthanks for the quick reply! You explained it very well. I haven't played this game since the early 2000s so I forgot about being able to load checkpoints. It all makes sense now.
Great Job!
👏👏👏
"Where's Romer...."
LOL Why did you kill Aramar at Expo?
Gabe and Lian have a long dialogue during the level fadeout, which you can skip by killing Mara, triggering Lian's "We needed her alive" line. The level still completes, and it's a few seconds faster since you don't have to wait for the regular dialogue to finish.
@@Baronhaynes▪️
So you're willing to trade a human life for a few measly seconds?! You disgust me!
