You know I'm sure a lot of viewers give you praise for doing an outstanding job educating folks on all types of automotive repair but I just wanted to add mine in too. Ever since I started watching your videos (been a subscriber for a while) I've been able to diagnose simple things like a seized slide pin on brakes, all the way up to a bad coilpack (test don't guess haha) but yeah the knowledge you present is invaluable. Just wanted to say thank you for making such great free content.
Ha! After dreading the chore of troubleshooting my rear hatch latch electrical circuit, Eric offers the "bypass" technique...solved my problem...kudos to you, sir!
Simailar issue on my 2010 Honda PIlot EXL. In my case my the rear hatch glass opens up fine but my door does not open when using the button on my door handle. I tired the screwdriver trick on the green connector but this did not make my locking mechanism do anything. I also purchased a new locking mechanisme and plugged it it but still nothing. wondering if there is a sensor where the door has to be locked before it can be tested... but on the video the screwdriver trick works with the door open... So I am not sure that it is the switch in the handle since the door lock should make a unlock motion with screwdriver trick. I am thinking still to replace the switch but wanted to know if anyone has any other suggestions.. Thanks.
Any video on replacing the pad? Also, if I am getting the locking sound when I push the pad and the door remains stuck is that the same problem? I have manually opened the hatch, but if I close it, it gets stuck again. Appreciate any help.
I'm disappointed in this video Eric O. Not once did I see the use of "Brake Cleaner". Now I have to wonder if the hatch button was really fixed.. Love the quick tip. Thanks again for sharing your vast wealth of knowledge with the general public, especially the DIY guys..
I was going to comment on the amount of stuff in the back of the car,,,,, But then it hit me,,, Rear door is stuck, no way to get all that stuff out. Customer is forgiven this time. Thanks for the Tip Eric!!
South Main Auto Repair well ain't that fancy! Never noticed or knew. Either way - dealing with that stuck tailgate would be a hassle taking stuff out the glass.
That tip was great. In this video I got the tip, a reach around, and junk In the trunk. The only thing missing is a happy ending 😁😁 I really like this video. The first one I did took me an hour to figure that cover out. 😂😂😂😂👍👍👍👍
Haa I was watching your pocket screwdriver when you laid it down...I used to lose them all the time until I forced myself to put it back in my pocket as soon as I was done with it. Nice video!
My hatch also isn’t working, but even with the bypass, the actuator still doesn’t go. I have also tried replacing the actuator and still nothing… do you have another step you would recommend?
Don't have a Honda but I do have a 09 Chevy 2500HD that the driver door would not open. I listened to the Disgruntled Mechanic and took it to a shop and had it repaired.
Will this work on a 2006 Honda Pilot EX-L model.? What part would I need to order. Have similar issues and has open before and now being stubborn and not want to open and just bought on the 9th.
howdy E.O. I had a handgun slide from under the seat and hit my feet during a test drive. beretta 380 to be exact. all I could tell him was " why carry such big a 380 when a 9mm can be had in the same size " ...customers,I'm telling you...they just don't get it!😆
South Main Auto Repair now ur talkin....btw I have all of the above....and then some 😎 Cali is go in into the s...hole but I'm fighting it....2nd amendment baby!
GM could learn a thing or 2 here - just pull a plastic cover, and you can manually move a lever to open that hatch! What a concept! Wish they had realized this back in the 80's on their S-series Blazers (not really a hatch, but same deal) - I had to just about take a 4' prybar to the top plastic tailgate panel, as I was scrunched up in the back there, then reach way down inside to pull the rod, as the plastic shaved a couple layers of skin off my forearm. At least if Honda designs something poorly, they make it accessible to repair! Free tip Friday ... on a Tuesday ... but on a Friday! :D
We wouldn't be saying it if it weren't true ... I've been a die-hard GM fan since pretty much birth. My dad was always a Ford guy, so I was one of the few that liked both FoMoCo & GM products. Fast forward to 1996 - the first year OBD-II vehicles hit the roadways, and GM seemed to reward our loyalty with expensive and failure-prone systems and parts - of course we didn't know this until around '99 or so, when everything started breaking ... conveniently when the warranty ended too. I still wasn't deterred - I bought my first NEW vehicle EVER in 2007 - a fully loaded Silverado extended cab, 4x4, with the 5.3.. What did I get for my loyalty? A big headache! Brakes pulsated right off the showroom floor with 42 miles on the clock - it went back 5 TIMES under warranty for this issue, and they could never fix it. The interior squeaked and rattled 10x worse than my 266k mile '94 K1500 did. Lower ball joints failed at 38k miles. Both uppers, BOTH hub bearings, and one strut failed at 50k. Started burning oil around that time as well. Noticed the front diff puking oil out an output seal then too. During one warranty repair, the lot tech smashed the truck up from bumper to bumper along the passenger side! Transmission has clunked on a light throttle 1-2 upshift since it had 2k miles - the noise is MUCH louder today at just under 91k miles. Oh, and the best part of all, is that my cam bearings and cam are failing according to my last oil analysis! I've been using full synthetic oil since 2k miles, and Amsoil Signature Series since 40k miles. Now, after watching Eric O here on SMA, I find out that GM integrated the door switches to the BCM, along with the installation of a FPCM (wtf do we need that for GM???) that all require reprogramming upon replacement! So, the $30k I spend wasn't enough - I have to pay for a part that hadn't been necessary in 110 years of automotive design, PLUS pay GM for the privilege of obtaining their proprietary software necessary to make the vehicle useful again. I'm lucky to be blessed with the ability to repair these on my own - what's the average Joe to do, but get screwed? Now, look at the labor time for headlight bulb replacement on the brand new ones - heard it's like 2 hours or something absolutely ridiculous. They don't even want their customers installing their own LIGHT BULBS! If ANY manufacturer builds something so that I, the purchaser, cannot easily repair it, then I will no longer support said brand!! ENOUGH SAID!
bad move running straight synthetic on a non-roller-lifter engine!!! hydraulic flat tappets need the good stuff in conventional oil, at most run synthetic blend and use an additive! they all claim once broke in, "blah blah blah" oil provides adequate protection, to that I say *(^%(&$& www.amsoil.com/newsstand/classic-and-vintage/articles/reduced-zddp-and-wear-protection/ www.thoughtco.com/debunking-the-motor-oil-additive-urban-legend-726162
Another thing to keep in mind is that the computer can override the door actuator if it "thinks" that it cannot correctly read the locked state of all the passenger doors.
I also have problem on OVERENGINEERED yet UNDERDESIGNED rear hatch release on my Honda FIT -where rear hatch release is welded custom proprietary mess -I drilled 3 rusted siezed allen or torks bolts out securing mess to hatch-and just used 1/4:20 bolts instead -to find unit both WELDED and riveted together -and over CDN $90 at dealer just for dodad !! where some sort of spring ( just to release catch ) is flaky, broken, aged so balky ~~
Hi, at 1:34 there is a wire on the left that your light rests against. Could you let know the part number for the wire going into the lock? It looks all taped up. Thanks.
Free tip Friday on a Friday. Too bad Toyota didn't do this for their Sienna. You have to remove the panel in order to open the rear hatch when the rear handle fail. Great tip on opening the rear hatch on a Honda Pilot.
I have same issue on a 2007 CR-V but pad and actuator both work. What other logic is preventing it from opening... I read somewhere that if the other door sensor is at fault, it may prevent tailgate from opening.. ?
I have an '01 Dodge Caravan and my hatch switch has gone "bad" twice. Removed switch, opened it up and just cleaned the corrosion off the contacts. Add some dielectric grease, re-assemble, re-install and I'm good to go. Cost me nothing but maybe an hour of my time.
Ok. Well mine is a 2007 and it does not have that nice little box to open right by the latch. It only has a round circle the size of a quarter. Now what? Can you help with that?
Mine is a 2019 and I could NOT find any lever or place to even use a screwdriver to turn so the latch would release…Any help or suggestions is greatly appreciated Thanks
My hand doesn't even fit in the hole on my 2011 Pilot Touring. Your diag video is great, but I wish the access was larger so I could fix it. Any suggestions on removing the lower trim?
I wanna hear a new used engine in the red Civic. I love those videos on R@R engine/ transmissions. Time for a three part video Eric O. It"s been a while.
That was awful kind of them to put that access panel there. I wonder why other automakers don't think of doing stuff that would make it easier to work on ;)
Mine is a crv with extra button to lock/unlock aside from the button to open/close the tailgate becuase it is a smart entry. How many wires and how to distinguish those wires? Mine is still working but just wondering if it gets to the point of not working i can hopefully repair it myself too. I am thinking there will just be 3 wires having a common ground to the 2 buttons. TIA!
I have a 2016 Honda Pilot and the liftgate is stuck shut. And I believe the touchpad is broken on it. What is it actually called and where can I get one?
a repair I've done before, the lady had run with out being able to open the gate for over a year...... also mr.o you have given me the idea move on and upwards to leave the fleet maintenance side and move to a small shop like yours. Any free tips on tools that I might run into being a general mechanic?
Great video again thanks. I have two customers who have Honda pilots never had this issue but if I need to replace that touch pad do you have to remove the inner door panel for access. Thanks again.
Have you ever seen this on a Durango? I have an 06 that is having the same problem. It has the powered liftgate and motorized latch. I thought the problem might be the motorized latch but this is interesting as I haven't tried the bypass on the "button".
3:46 sec. BOOOOOOOOOO we want long vids. Hi Eric O . when ya moving to Syracuse. I need an honest mechanic down here that knows what hes doing. One that dont just throw parts at the problem.
Great video Eric. Would this problem also render the button on the driver door and the key remote useless too? I have a 15 Pilot. Have not had this problem yet, but this video will be helpful. Thanks.
Hmm, I'm actually considering a 2011-12 Pilot as a replacement for the antique Jeep. Any other gotchas that are common failures? I know about the issues with the AFM if the thing wasn't well taken care of. I don't see many of them so figured I ask here.
Cool man I'll to remember that if I know anyone that this happens to. I think you do a great job of showing the problem and then explain and show the repair👍
Hello Erik, I a problem with my rear passenger seat. The door won’t open but it’s because the lock won’t unlock. I already tried unlocking it with the remote control and by hand but it just won’t unlock 🤷🏻♀️ Would you please help me with this? Thank you so much!! 🙏🏼
South Main Auto Repair can you eat it!!! can you eat it!!! that is the question you can always get a big sandwich if you don't want the pizza no maybe not lol
So how do you replace the touchpad switch????????
You know I'm sure a lot of viewers give you praise for doing an outstanding job educating folks on all types of automotive repair but I just wanted to add mine in too. Currentuuplay Break try
Well you left me wondering how the magic touch pad goes in, Eric. Take care. Doug
My hatch is stuck closed at the moment so this video is great!! Thanks so much, I'll be working on this as soon as I get off work today
Ha! After dreading the chore of troubleshooting my rear hatch latch electrical circuit, Eric offers the "bypass" technique...solved my problem...kudos to you, sir!
Thanks! Worked like a charm. Used one of my wife’s shoes for the job.
Clean, Simple, no kidding around, straight to the point. A + have a good weekend and thanks for the video. Eric O.
I’m having this problem now with my Honda Pilot Your video was very helpful...Thank you!!!
Your video helped with my 2017 crv. Popped right open with a push!
This guy is great! 90% of the time, every time.
Thank you for the timely video. Just saved me a ton of frustration on my wife's Pilot.
Geez Mr O you are such a great mechanic that for a second there I thought you were really gonna fix it with that shoe!!
Simailar issue on my 2010 Honda PIlot EXL. In my case my the rear hatch glass opens up fine but my door does not open when using the button on my door handle. @@boskokukucka5588 did you ever manage to find a fix? Family is having the exact same behavior as yours.
Any video on replacing the pad? Also, if I am getting the locking sound when I push the pad and the door remains stuck is that the same problem? I have manually opened the hatch, but if I close it, it gets stuck again. Appreciate any help.
This is very helpful. What part should I be ordered? The trunk touch lock actuator replacement?
I'm disappointed in this video Eric O. Not once did I see the use of "Brake Cleaner". Now I have to wonder if the hatch button was really fixed.. Love the quick tip. Thanks again for sharing your vast wealth of knowledge with the general public, especially the DIY guys..
I googled 'classic reacharound' and it didn't lead me to more Honda videos 😂🤣😂
Turn off google safe search for a real surprise ;)
Buajajajajajajajajajajajaja. You made me spit out my coffee!!!!
BWAAHAHAHAA! And a surprise indeed! :D :D :D
Ummmm now I need to Google it myself....
so Eric is off to have a google ,,,,, hope Mrs O does't catch you ;) lol ,,,,
I was going to comment on the amount of stuff in the back of the car,,,,, But then it hit me,,, Rear door is stuck, no way to get all that stuff out. Customer is forgiven this time.
Thanks for the Tip Eric!!
chungaleta1234 true - but they could have folded those seats down and did the crawl to retrieve stuff out of the back...easier said than done.
Actually the glass opens on these
Ohh, So, no mercy on the customer LOL
South Main Auto Repair well ain't that fancy! Never noticed or knew.
Either way - dealing with that stuck tailgate would be a hassle taking stuff out the glass.
I was hoping for some kink, like size 14 red high heels or a thong.
You left out the part where you swap out the touchpad. Lol
So what happens when the manual lever doesn’t unlock the hatch from the inside? Any insight to that problem?
Yeah mine didn't open nor does it have that latch. I got a 2015 pilot 😫
That tip was great. In this video I got the tip, a reach around, and junk In the trunk. The only thing missing is a happy ending 😁😁
I really like this video. The first one I did took me an hour to figure that cover out. 😂😂😂😂👍👍👍👍
South Main Auto Repair I'll record it and you can edit in this video. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
You too funny Eric.
You need to do Beetlejuice impressions! You’ve got the voice and delivery! Thanks for the excellent help!
Thx for the video
The red civic been there for long time
Haa I was watching your pocket screwdriver when you laid it down...I used to lose them all the time until I forced myself to put it back in my pocket as soon as I was done with it. Nice video!
They always poke me in my pocket!
last time I put one in my pocket was years ago and I nearly needed stiches
What’s the part needed?
My hatch also isn’t working, but even with the bypass, the actuator still doesn’t go. I have also tried replacing the actuator and still nothing… do you have another step you would recommend?
did you figure it out?
Don't have a Honda but I do have a 09 Chevy 2500HD that the driver door would not open. I listened to the Disgruntled Mechanic and took it to a shop and had it repaired.
It's a slow day for me and this vid kept me entertained for all 3:47 lol. Hope u have another to post! Good vid!
Haha yo Leek! Glad I could help out for a min or two
Great tip no matter which day it is
Will this work on a 2006 Honda Pilot EX-L model.? What part would I need to order. Have similar issues and has open before and now being stubborn and not want to open and just bought on the 9th.

Thank you sir, was able to fix my 02 MDX
Hi, at 1:34 there is a wire on the left that your light rests against. Could you let know the part number for the wire going into the lock? It looks all taped up. Thanks.
I bet dorman makes a fantastic replacement part.
Thank you for this video!! I was able to open my 2015 Honda Pilot trunk and get my jumper cables from the underneath compartment. Whew!!
Wah how mine doesn't have that latch 😩
Free tip Friday on a Friday. Too bad Toyota didn't do this for their Sienna. You have to remove the panel in order to open the rear hatch when the rear handle fail. Great tip on opening the rear hatch on a Honda Pilot.
Yeah Honda has it figured out :D
That's what the Sawzall is for!
hole saw bit :)
How do you replace the actual handle on the tailgate??? Do I have to remove the inner panel? I hope not. Please advise thank you
I have same issue on a 2007 CR-V but pad and actuator both work. What other logic is preventing it from opening... I read somewhere that if the other door sensor is at fault, it may prevent tailgate from opening.. ?
Also facing this same fault on my 11 pilot.
guess I'm gonna be popping off covers and giving places in my acura the classic reacharound since that looked really similar
Have you ever seen when th dash said tailgate open while driving after jus shutting it or nvr used it?
So what is the actual part that you need to order for this?
Problem I’m having. Haha
Well, I'll be. The reach around is apparently an international thing. Even the Japanese are doing it! Who'd a thunk it. Thanks Dr. O!
Baxrok2 yes it is a well-known very classic move
I’m looking for that white connector that plugs into the actuator, does anyone have a name or link to buy replacement?
On my 2021 Pilot, the hatch lock is blocked from the inside so I cannot open the hatch.
I van hear the motor trying to open it.
Should i break it.
Matt Sherrill AND your not a parts changer. that's important part!!!.
Ok. Well mine is a 2007 and it does not have that nice little box to open right by the latch. It only has a round circle the size of a quarter. Now what? Can you help with that?
nice tip for the line tech
Is there a video on how to replace the part?
Gracias amigo me fué de gran valor tú vídeo 👍👍👍💯
Mine is a 2019 and I could NOT find any lever or place to even use a screwdriver to turn so the latch would release…Any help or suggestions is greatly appreciated Thanks
That's a huge tip. I would guess that many will find that useful!
My hand doesn't even fit in the hole on my 2011 Pilot Touring. Your diag video is great, but I wish the access was larger so I could fix it. Any suggestions on removing the lower trim?
thanks Eric for that important information, sam
great video, how about a video on gmc 04 envoy fan/clutch change out and flashing process
Where would the fuse be?
74812-SZA-A01 for second generation Honda Pilot (2009-2015).
I wanna hear a new used engine in the red Civic. I love those videos on R@R engine/ transmissions. Time for a three part video Eric O. It"s been a while.
everyone always in a hurry to see things that cost $$$, vs making $$$ :)
That was awful kind of them to put that access panel there. I wonder why other automakers don't think of doing stuff that would make it easier to work on ;)
nothing more fun than having to remove seats, multiple interior panels and fight to get door cover off, just to unlatch....
My KIA Sorento has access panels for the latch, as well as access to the tail light bulbs, or the nuts that hold the housings in the body.
Hi , what is your opinion of the Power Probe set of testers ( 1,2,3,4 and hook )
a repair I've done before, the lady had run with out being able to open the gate for over a year...... also mr.o you have given me the idea move on and upwards to leave the fleet maintenance side and move to a small shop like yours. Any free tips on tools that I might run into being a general mechanic?
I can't find the part anywhere (tailgate release switch). Finding the right one for other makes/models, but not a 2011 Pilot. Has anyone found one?
Great video again thanks. I have two customers who have Honda pilots never had this issue but if I need to replace that touch pad do you have to remove the inner door panel for access. Thanks again.
Yes you do, very easy
Have you ever seen this on a Durango? I have an 06 that is having the same problem. It has the powered liftgate and motorized latch. I thought the problem might be the motorized latch but this is interesting as I haven't tried the bypass on the "button".
I have not done one of those just yet
Good video eric o .Video"s need to be longer eric o ha ha thanks eric for the good tips about fixing things I will look forward for future video's
Thanks, now I know how to open my rear hatch from the inside.
3:46 sec. BOOOOOOOOOO we want long vids. Hi Eric O . when ya moving to Syracuse. I need an honest mechanic down here that knows what hes doing. One that dont just throw parts at the problem.
Will this test work for a 2007 Yukon XL as well? Having intermittent problems with the rear gate not opening.
Muchas gracias saludos desde Sinaloa México
what if when you push that latch, it still doesn't open? What's that diagnosis, and what needs to be repaired?
Does it need a replacement or is there a fix for this. I can't even find a replacement.
Thanks I was able to open my 2019 before my husband found out
Great video Eric. Would this problem also render the button on the driver door and the key remote useless too? I have a 15 Pilot. Have not had this problem yet, but this video will be helpful. Thanks.
No, those will still work fine if it had one. That usually only opens the glass however
South Main Auto Repair hmm not on mine. I have the touring, so maybe it's different. Thanks for the reply.
short, sweet, to the point.....nice video
My actuator is clicking with the key and the dash button but not the handle pad?
Hmm, I'm actually considering a 2011-12 Pilot as a replacement for the antique Jeep. Any other gotchas that are common failures? I know about the issues with the AFM if the thing wasn't well taken care of. I don't see many of them so figured I ask here.
Cool man I'll to remember that if I know anyone that this happens to. I think you do a great job of showing the problem and then explain and show the repair👍
Where do I find that button?
no brake clean....boo
Hey no phone ringing, resubscribing!

Hello Erik, I a problem with my rear passenger seat. The door won’t open but it’s because the lock won’t unlock. I already tried unlocking it with the remote control and by hand but it just won’t unlock 🤷🏻♀️
