Eric: For those of us who have been or are auto technicians, we understand completely what it took to do this video. When a customer is on their way to pick up their vehicle and you are "under the gun" to get the job finished and there is no time for error, making a video has to be the last thing you wanted to do. I'm sure I can speak for everyone how much we appreciate what you do. Thank you very much.
Everyone has an instant gratification mindset now, they want their 3 hour axle leak fixed on their 1 hour lunch break and it has to be done today even though there's 5 other vehicles in front of them in your 2 man shop. If the general public knew that the average mechanic makes $30,000/year with no benefits, I bet they'd be a little nicer to the man busting hands open to fix your problems.
Just know that some of your customers are pleasantly surprised to find their vehicles done at the end of the day. And appreciate you stayed late to finish it, although we feel bad we caused you stay late. And understand that sometimes repairs go unexpectedly long, or the out-of-towners with a minivan full of kids had a breakdown, or the mother-in-law needs here snow tires on _today_ because it might snow.
@@COBRO98 That was my last net after 20-something years in the business, not including the 2 years I took mostly off to finish my upper division work at college. After which, I rolled out my roll-arounds from storage and went back to work at the dealership. 2 years of that, post graduation was enough for me. At the dealership, the Tuneup/Driveability guys were the big money makers, followed by the AC/Electrical guys - which I had been at my first dealership some 25 years earlier, and pretty much everyone else sucked hind teet. Not everyone, but most everyone.
I would have to say 90% of us here come for entertainment. Standing there shooting the s*** with the guy working on a car. I don't watch much TV. I watch my preferred channels on UA-cam. It's real enough. Television that's not real including the news.
Painting that bracket is the difference between a shop that repairs cars, and a shop that has a real mechanic, nobody is going to see it. But you have enough pride in your work that you spend the time and money. To do it the right way.
No real SMA fan will care if it’s a repeat 😂 I think most folks stopped watching for repair advice a while back. Now it’s just about hanging out with our friend Eric 👍 if we get some repair advice along the way, it’s just a bonus 😉
2 holes, top and bottom, just like real life😂 Eric I spit my coffee all over my kitchen floor😂 Good way to start Sat. morning. Changing an electric rack and pinion on a 2012 exploder today, wish me luck!
The customer is on his way was a total reality television move. Extreme makeover, Wrangler edition. I love to see you and Vanessa laugh together. You two demonstrate a great marriage partnership that has been built on a lifetime of friendship.
Yes I very much remember when the stone washe jeans came out , lol my dad said I'm not buying those if you want those your buying them yourself !" Well I ended up buying my very first video game console instead, the NES with duck hunt back then $150 I delivered a Lotta newspapers to save for that , but my dad was extremely proud of me for setting that goal and buying it ! That system got a ton of use ! My dad asked me if I minded if he tried it and I said of course ! GOD I miss him ! Thanks for another great video Eric and Mrs. O
"Except it's not a sock"... "the two finger tickler"... 2 more awesome quotes that I have to find a way to include in casual conversations.... LOL.... Regards....
Thanks for taking us along even though you were pressed for time. I'm very glad that I don't own a Jeep, but I guess that's why it stands for Just Empty Every Pocket. Huzzah!
Memory muscle kicked in, weird. I swear I smelt gear oil, rust dust while you were wire brushing flange, and acetylene, lighting the torch. We must have the same source for factory specs. lol
Love your videos. Don't worry if you have done something before, there is always new members like me coming along, though I have been watching for a while now. Keep them coming 😄👍
The thing that many customers do not understand, is that experience is expensive. But not going back for a repeat performance is priceless (repairs)...priceless
There's nothing better than watching a true professional work on a vehicle that I will literally never own or work on myself, but with the hopes of in passing a complete stranger, I can somehow overhear their difficulties in performing this exact job and with perfect timing and expert delivery, provide them with the wisdom needed to complete it. Seems completely logical.
Trying to put the springs on with the shoes in position has always been a "mother lover" for me so I nearly always assemble all the little springy mothers on the shoes on the bench and bring the pair to the vehicle after and pry bar themn up and into position. Seems much less stressful and no pinched skin or springs escaping across the shop... Oh hello Mrs O :D
Being an owner of a 2019 Wrangler JLU, I really enjoyed learning how to change the seal and bearings. As comented on part I, I managed to replace the e-brakes while keeping the axle in since I did not want to fiddle with the seals and bearings, which add extra costs to the job. But I know I’ll have to do them eventually, and now I know how!
You started out right by mounting the first shoe but you didn't put both springs on both shoes at once and bend them around the cable adjuster. It's so much easier that way.
I had to replace the rear shoes on my wife's "Toy" which was the first time I've done drum brakes in about 20 years. They were not bendix brakes, so it was different & my tools were useless. It actually went OK, but I remembered going to a class on disc brakes, way back when, where the old-timers were complaining about how difficult it was replacing disc brakes compared to the bendix style brakes! I'm so glad I can wait another 140,000 miles before I get to replace the rear brakes again! Disc brakes rule!
Man, I hated doing those. Glad to be retired now. That setup is entirely not necessary, old style drum brakes were more than effective on the rear. Long lasting and easy to replace.
Same procedure for doing a '69 Grand Prix axle bearing. Drum brakes though so there's no problem with the parking brake springs. The more they change the more they stay the same. Thanks for the thorough video Mr. O. I'm not sure that anyone can do it but if they do it'll be easier after they see this. Merry Christmas everybody!
I can’t believe that in this day and age we haven’t come up with something better than a nail with a squished end and a bunch of springs to put this stuff together. I had to replace the parking brake cable in my Grand Cherokee and had to pull the seats, console and the carpet to get to it.
The torque to spec" talk is so funny to me.. because I know the people that would cry about it, are the ones who believe it when you say it.. lol.. For some reason that just warms my heart. hahahah.. As someone who actually works on my own cars- I know the few places where it's actually important, and you get a feel for the rest. (as you do). Those sniveling Whimperers don't understand what efficiency is.
The offical way of getting the bearing retainer off is to drill a hole approximately 3/4ths of the way through it, and a little smaller width wise. Then use a cold chisel to wack right over ware you drilled. This will cause the retainer to split and slide right off by hand or fall off. Just for those who may not have a torch, this is how it's done.
Brought back too many bad memories of doing drum brakes on Mopars. The bottom adjuster spring was always a RPITA. It is always a great video when Vic is involved. Your method of axle bearing removal is way more efficient. Merry Vicmas to you and the whole family.
Eric o painting that part will get him extra points at the Jeep show 😎 I agree with you ever ago. I have done those once without taking the axles out and the job was horrible never again will that happen
I agree Mr O it is a real mother lover to do the brakes on ANY of the JEEPS with that AXLE place that includes my 1999 Grand Cherokee , pull the axles out to do the job it's that simple .
Shame it was snowing , you could have shown us you prowess driving & ripped a handbrake turn.🤣 Cheers Mr .O. always waiting for the SMA Comedy show highlight of the week.
I hear you about the snow and driving in it. I used to haul produce to Alaska year round and I don’t miss laying under the truck or trailer in -40 and fix something. I spend my winters in the south west desert and are perfectly fine with that.

My mother died from iced cream
It's maybe a repeat but you are a little older and a little wiser so it's good to see a repeat. Eric's words of wisdom are good. 😂
Mmm...ice cream. It's 31 degrees today, but I have no issue with a little ice cream.

Definitely not a flat rate repair! Love to see the care taken for a professional job
10 minutes extra time spent that earns endless hours worth of customers coming into the shop.
I second that!
I agree completely
Pressed for time, harassed by Mrs. O, and you STILL find time to make us a video. You must like us or something...

IF customers complain about your work ethics, well, they can ALWAYS do it themselves, OR they can always learn from the best from S.M.A.
Mrs. O giving us more great humor.😂😂😂😂😂
Always a good time at South Main Auto.
Moral of the story, rushing sucks. Great video as usual. Thanks.

The stone washed jeans story was hilarious!
You make most of the repairs, including thorny electronic issues, seem effortless - attests to mastery. And yes, love the corny humor.

Another job well done. All Eric O videos should be required viewing for apprentice mechanics!! 👍
I need that pump release knob, thanks for bringing that to our attention 😊❤
A couple minutes in, I realized he had in fact done one of these before. So I did the obvious thing - I watched this one to the end!

One piece at a time, and it didn't cost me a dime!!!! I miss your singing along with the Baaaaaaaaaaa.
Regarding that paint, I believe satin finish is what you were thinking ole son.

Yes, exactly. Satin finish. But high-gloss will work also if that's what you have at hand/in hand.

Always like a good brake job. Have done a brake job on the road when I was younger.
Happy ending??
I believe the word you’re looking for is Satin. For describing the paint finish; in between flat (or matte) and gloss.
