    37:53 I too have the "Fred Flintstone" foot, short, high and wide. My fitter sez my foot fits better in the box. The RS 120 has been the only boot i can ski all day from the initial strap in, right outta the box(only custom insole). Light and comfortable. But Im afraid they've seen their day. This may be its replacement (?).

    Bob, I d like to hear more of your experience skiing with the LV 120......Thanks. My experience was it felt like a 120 flex at the ski shop but skiing was a totally surprise how soft it felt! I played with the elastomers and almost no option, I had to stay with the grey ones. The black elastomers made the boot so soft....the softer boots that I ever skied before. I'm a very ski boot type of guy orientated and love to feel my ski boots and how they perform.

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  2 місяці тому

      I though that it was a good thing the boot fit well because I thought the same thing about the flex. Felt soft. I don't mind flexible boots because I have very rigid ankles, but I did notice a bit of a lack of precision vs. the 130, and some other 120 flex boots.

    You started talking about cuff alignment, then went over to the rubber thingies... did I miss out on whether cuff alignment can be done? Critical for me and the dual pivot leaves some question marks regarding this. On the close up it looked like some adjustment can be done, but follow up question is then - how much compared to RX and RS models😅.
    Since you know the sales rep so well can you also ask him about Lange canting plates - what he recommends and where to get them😊.
    A lot of investigation and time finding this out before buying a boot. Happy for your input😍

      Cuff alignment on the outside. Similar to what we have on RS and RX models.

    I can see how loosening up the feel of the Shadow was needed to make it feel more like a speed machine. I tried a speed machine 130 for a fun boot for part a season and it was so different from my RS or RX I couldn't stand it. The speedmachine heel hold was as about as tight as a bathtub and the response to tongue pressure was lethargic at best. It handled like a 1986 chevy celebrity wagon when I was used to a mini cooper.

      I still reach for the RS--more of a weight thing for me--the Shadow is great, but feels a bit light and is not as progressive of a flex compared to the more traditional RS.

    Hello, thanks for the review!
    What will you chose between a Mach1, Speedmachine(I know Jeff is a big fan of them) or Shadow? Which one is more comfortable for a long day, which one is more fun and which one is more responsive?
    And do you see any differences between speedmachine 130 and speedmachine 130S? Really can t decide which boot should i buy :(

    • @SkiEssentials

      We cannot comment on fit as we are all different. We have found the new Shadow to be very high in the responsiveness department, though, and it just makes skiing easier.

    Thanks for another great review! I bought the 130 Shadows from a local bootfitter, but before I use them, wanted to double-check I understood Bob and Jeff's experience correctly: it seems optimized for moderate conditions, but do these still perform at a high level with more aggressive/expert skiing like GS turns and steeps? Also, for park, did the ultra-responsive design make take-offs and landings hooky at all?

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  4 місяці тому +1

      No issues with high end steeps and speed. Jeff put in the softer pieces for better park performance and seems to do just fine in the air and on the rails.

    I have been skiing these in a medium volume this year. I immediately liked the fit in the store. They have performed very well. The toe box is generous. I have added a higher arched sole. My only complaint is my inside ankles started killing me after my 2nd or third day skiing. It's probably my pointy ankles, but thought the softer liner may be playing a roll too.

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  4 місяці тому

      It's not the densest liner, so I do think there's something there in addition to pointy ankles. A boot fitter should be able to pad the ankle area on the liner to give you some more support.

    I'm currently trying to decide between the shadow 120 lv and the hawx ultra 120. They both fit very well after the initial try on I did. if you have any experience with the atomics, how different do you think they would feel in terms of flex/performance and also in terms of more off-piste/tree skiing? thanks!

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  4 місяці тому

      The Shadow is easier to get to the performance band, and that's a huge benefit for a lot of skiers, especially those that find themselves off piste or in the bumps and trees--the boots are very responsive. The Atomic is great, but lacks the new tech that makes the Shadow stand out.

  • @bretts7037

    Hey guys great and informative review. Trying to decide on an upgrade from my Atomic Hawx Ultra 120s. I've been in Ultras for 3 seasons but I'm looking to venture out to a different fit. I'm unable to try on before buying, but curious about your opinion of how this boot, and also the Tecnica Mach1, would compare in forefoot width, and ease of getting on/off. The Atomics are nightmares getting in and out of. Fit of the Atomics is right on the edge of being just right in a snugness, and bordering discomfort/numbness. Bought the Prime XTD 130 to replace them but they almost feel too roomy in comparison. Definitely intrigued by these Shadow and the Tecnica and you've done good reviews of both. Should I stick with a low volume or go with MV? Thoughts? Thank you!

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  6 місяців тому +2

      This Shadow is pretty easy to get on and off in my experience. The LV in the Shadow feels a bit more roomy than that of the Mach1 in instep height and the liner is more amenable while the Tecnica's liner is a bit stiff/thick.

      @@SkiEssentials Got my hands on these finally. Hard to find!! They are PERFECT out of the box. At the 130 flex, would be nice to see that buckle style system rather than velcro on the power strap but for comfort and in/out ease, I'm never going back to Atomic again. Super easy entry boots, I'm not to sure about the LV, after a week started to feel more roomier that what I like. Interesting boots. I m getting the 130 flex.....Let see how it goes. Awesome thank you.
    What is the narrowest boot on the market you think?
    Flex 100 to 130, it's less of priority.
    Let's say we compare this one to the technica mach 1 LV for instance.
    Or others like K2 recon LV but I don't care about the brand actually.

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  2 місяці тому +1

      There are some plug/race boots that come in softer flexes like a 110 that start out around 92 mm in the last. Those aren't really available or "on the wall" at a boot shop, though--more of a special order item. For retail purposes, I think the Atomic Hawx Ultra boots fit pretty darn tight, as do the Nordica Pro Machine. The Tecnica is right there, but the Recon feels a bit roomier in the heel.

      @SkiEssentials  5 місяців тому

      One of our co-workers has been a Krypton skier for years and years--he made the move to the Shadow this year and couldn't be happier. The fit is more like a four-buckle boot, but you get the same direct and instantaneous flex/response as the cabrio. We'll try to get our feet into the Krypton for a review, but boot reviews are harder to come by than ski reviews.

    Ski Boots.... UGH! Peoples feet are so different and their skiing style/form means some comfort boots are just fine while others want a stiffer more direct power transfer for immediate response, yet the fit means unbuckling the boot after every. I personally loathe buying new boots. Probably should take up snowboarding.

His body / style are just *different*.

  • @andrewkling2931

    Jeff I’m curious in what conditions you felt you were over flexing it. I had got fitted for a pair but off piste I constantly feel I am over flexing it. on piste is fine

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  6 місяців тому +1

      It seems like it's more the mixing of conditions, so going from softer snow to firmer snow within a turn. I think the lighter weight has something to do with it and the fact that these boots focus more on precision than power. Heavier and more powerful boots will move through transitioning snow conditions easier than these might.

    • @milesparker3263
      @milesparker3263 4 місяці тому

      @SkiEssentials Yeah, I think the a subtly here is that with a "heavier boot" you can bomb through things; like you can get thrown around and because you need to work harder to change forward pressure, you don't get the immediate feed back in the same way -- which is counter-intuitive -- but think like a damper in a car suspension. Especially since on a traditional boot, it's plastic deforming, not a hinge action.With these, you can't rely on just flexing more. So Andrew it felt like you were over flexing them because you were, hahah. In my two day experience with these you do have to ease up quite a bit and def if you stand on them -- as we have to with other boots when you jump into crud out of a groomer -- you are going to get tossed around a lot more. My experience with these is that they turn much more quickly and easily in funky snow conditions. IOW, it may not be that there is more of a transition with these boots, it may instead be that you have been jumping on your current boots *more* to get them to turn like _now_ in the trees the deep stuff without realizing it and you just need to ease up. :)

I skied the stock liner 4 days then put my Zipfit in and have now had 4 days with that setup. As I’m sure your aware there is nothing like a Zipfit liner. I feel like my edge control is better and as the review mentioned twitchy….maybe, but I’m thinking of it as very responsive and, again, precise. I don’t see that much difference from my RX really.
