    This just shows you how absolutely not a joke depression is. The downward spiral takes you down intensely and fast. Vincent had family that loved him yet his mindset was still in a "I'm a complete burden to everyone around me". I can empathize with him since this was my mindset grow-up and attempted his solution to his problem as it was mine. You can still feel alone even when surrounded by people, you can still have an outlet to express yourself but yet still have these intrusive thoughts. Depression is no joke and it never was.

      In the 1800's mental illness didn't exist, (well maybe in society's standards) it's pretty sad that he have to live this for a long. May he rest in peace.

  • @ibchillin
    @ibchillin 3 роки тому +238

    it was actually never confirmed that he killed himself - that's just what a lot of people say happened. there's pretty solid evidence that he was accidentally shot by some teenagers, and he just said he shot himself to protect them.

      @devilheartcandy 3 роки тому +4

      Wait but if he was shot by other people how would he have said he shot himself when he died?

    • @ibchillin
      @ibchillin 3 роки тому +32

      @@devilheartcandy he didn't die immediately, and the other people were kids he knew who likely didn't mean to shoot him - that's part of why people think he didn't try to kill himself. he wasn't shot in the head, he was shot in the stomach. why would he shoot himself in the stomach to kill himself?
      he had enough time to *insist* he had shot himself before he passed away, but he actually was strongly against the idea of killing himself before then.

Who in their sane mind would have lend their gun to a complete and crazy stranger with a cut off ear???

    In my country, art history is really talked about, in fact it's a taught subject at school.
    I've always loved his paintings, since i learned about him, but they have such a tragic story.
    Also, interesting fact: somehow, The Starry Night looks similar to Kolmogorov's model that sheds light on the turbulent flow in fluid dynamics, which is one of the most complicated subjects for the human brain to comprehend. And he also painted the Celestial bodies proportionally far.
    Wow. Seems like he was also a really excellent stargazer!
    Also, i really reccomend "Loving, Vincent".

    Also if you guys do really like him, I suggest you check out the small musical, Starry, about him, his brother and their closest relations. Right now, it’s just a concept album but the songs are gorgeous and i sob every time. Plus it has Jeff Blim from Starkid Productions in it.

    If someone wants to learn more, there's a movie I watched at the end of the year in art class. It was made with the help of 100+ artists who painted each and every frame like stop motion in Van Gogh's style. It talks about his death very well, but the only problem is I'm not sure of the name or if it's been translated into English.

    I just went to an immersive exhibition of his works, where animated versions of his paintings were projected onto the walls of a giant room. While I think it's sad that he's primarily remembered for being a "tortured artist" (I have a lot of empathy for those sorts of people, whose art is primarily attributed to their suffering, even if the reality was more complicated), it was wonderful to see how appreciated he is today.

    when i was in high school, around grade 9-10 (freshman-sophomore), i was horribly depressed (still am but doing better) and my mother showed me a dr. who episode about vincent van gogh. it was an absolutely beautiful episode.
    ((spoilers)) it started with them in a restaurant, like the one van gogh had painted, and talked about his struggles with mental illness. at the end, the doctor shows him the museum in amsterdam, showing him that his art would eventually be recognized throughout the entire world, and that his work didn’t go to waste.
    he’s one of my fav historical artists, and i own a bunch of items with ‘starry night’ on them, including the sticker on my laptop. :)

When I was a child I made a painting on numbers of one of his paintings (the one shown at 7:35). I've learnt about his story since I was a child, but started to understand it when I was older. I respect Van Gogh a lot and wish he knew how much we admire his art today.

    Such people who can not only care for but look beyond someone's suffering and see who they are... Is someone I'd only dreamed of meeting.
    People unconsciously begin to view others with deteriorating health as less than human. Some are seen as monsters, and some are seen as pathetic or revolting.

    Thank you for actually talking about the more details of the ear! So many people mock this artist about it and thought it was just a "Mentally ill man who had a twisted form of romance" which wasn't the case and it was a very recurring thought even in the Art History community even. It was more complicated and the fact that you expanded on it gives me hope.
    I would love to see you dissect the "Tortured Genius" bias and reality "trope"! My Art History Professor actually talked about that and the "Smooth Operator" that were used for the other form of Genius which is just as complicated honestly. I'm just curious if you're considering this topic from a viewpoint of purely an artist Standard or both a Art Historian and Artist Standard? (Because I have noticed it's a weird disconnect between the two schools of artists and art historians and I want to change that personally but would love to hear your stance on it).

    With Vincent's suicide, some people have speculated that he wasn't the one to shoot himself, that instead it was some punk from around where he lived that inflicted his wound, since his gun shot wound didn't appear to have as big as an impact on the surrounding skin as it should had been if it was self inflicted, and that it was an odd angle where the wound was located

    My primary school taught us that Van Gogh cut off his ear because he wanted to get his self portrait to perfection … or am I mistaken for another artist

    There’s a very interesting movie about Van Gogh’s life on Netflix. It’s not a documentary, but an imitation of what happened. I can’t remember what it’s called.

    3 Months late but, I just went to a Beyond Van Gogh exhibit over the summer this year. Man oh man, I heard of him and his artwork but, I never got to hear about his past. The fact that his family used his artwork for target practice made me so upset. And I just heard on the news one of his paintings showed up in Europe after a bunch of Nazi’s took it.

    Honestly everyone think the artist has the perfect life
    They dont think about how claude monet had eye problems,
    They didnt think about how vincent van goh had mental problems,
    Heck claude got lucky enough to have his art sell while he was still alive

    I'm mad I never learned this in art college. This just goes to show mental illness is not new and has always been around and only now we're really doing something about it.

    My art teacher said he was wounded by some young men when he tried breaking up a fight, and decided not to go to the hospital because he didn't want to get them in trouble
