In my head canon, this is what really happened to Brad Pitt in ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD: smoked that joint dipped in acid, thought that he was transported to a comic book world for the next 50 years where he became a cop, only to wake up after the events of this movie sobered up on the floor of Rick Dalton's house while bleeding next to the corpses of the Manson Family.
Fun Fact: Bakshi wanted the story to be about a half doodle-human hybrid getting revenge on both worlds and his parents for not having a place in either world. Hollywood executives changed the script and we got this hot garbage. Which interestingly enough, is the reason why Holli Would is the name of the villain.
It was meant to be an R-Rated horror movie as well. Brad Pitt was supposed to be the animator, and the child was supposed to be played by Drew Barrymore, depicted being a punk with spiked red hair.
The original vision for cool world was actually about the child of the human animator and his cartoon drawing. It was supposed to be about the half human half cartoon hybrid creature who doesn't belong to either world and ends up becoming a serial killer or something. I imagine it was supposed to be a lot like the movie Splice mixed with Tom and Jerry
The original concept for the film sounded really cool, where a human and comic character have a kid who’s hybrid and comes into the real world. It would have been interesting to see
This roast has one of my favorite Korey deliveries of all time at 41:00... "We finally find out what happens when doodles have sex with humans and enter the real world..." *Cut to clip of Kim Basinger turning into a sexy clown in front of Frank Sinatra Jr. and Gabriel Byrne turning into a cartoon hobo while boinging and elephant noises play in the background.* "...MORE DUMB SHIT!" This actually isn’t what Ralph Bauchi created. Apparently, when he was writing the script, the studio interfered so much that he had no idea what was going on with this movie. In fact, it’s why he named the character Holli Wood (Hollywood). Referencing how she was destroying everything. So many changes is why the plot feels scattered and incomplete. Even the actress that played Holli wanted to make the film more family friendly because she wanted to show some kids she was visiting at the hospital. Admittedly a nice gesture but completely unnecessary. Ralph’s actual plot for this movie involved a man who has sex with a toon. Then it would focus on the child. Feeling like a complete outcast, not knowing where he belongs and even tries to kill the father. Some have made it headcannon that the child is Judge Doom from Roger Rabbit.

In 1990, director, Ralph Bakshi had a totally different version of the film that wasn't used. Brad Pitt was meant to play an illustrator who once had sex with his creation named Debbie Dallas and later gave birth to a baby that's half cartoon and half human. He would soon abandon the child and the child would grow up, seeing her self as a freak and soon resent her father. Leaving her to travel to the real world to kill him as revenge. Drew Barrymore was meant to play the killer and was depicted as more punk with short spiked orange hair and leather before she was rewritten to be Holly's character with blonde and wore white. This version was also described as "Re-Animator meets Roger Rabbit." However after Bakshi pitched it to Paramount, he stated he brought the idea in 10 seconds. But Bakshi did screenplays going off his original concept with other writers doing uncredited rewrites. One of the writers accused Bakshi of lying about his contribution regarding their credits. Now, there's a famous rumor that the script was made behind Bakshi's back without his knowledge and he got into a physical fight with the producer. However, Bakshi would later debunk this in a 2022 interview with "I never punched Frank Mancuso Jr. That was just a rumor. I yelled at him a couple of times but that wasn't his fault. I like Frank. I never punched him. Can you set that straight?"
Me and my buddy watched this high as hell and it was a truly bizarre experience. Whoever made this movie was on way, way stronger drugs than we were lol.
If I understand it correctly Jack had visions which led to him creating the Cool World comic. So it existed before him but he inexplicably had visions about it.... for some reason
You're correct. Cool World has always existed but inserted itself into Jack's mind to pull him in so Holli can use him to turn human. Brad Pitt's character was a cop because he had an iron will so he was there to balance the scales.
Man people have come out of the works to talk about this movie all of a sudden, what is going on? LOL The story? Batshit. The animation? Great. Cool World in a nutshell.
Jack did not create Holli. Cool World is implied to be like a dreamworld that influences artists in the real world. Jack THINKS he made her but he was simply inspired to draw her. In the comic book tie-in, it's revealed that the dark sex-crazed part of Cool World is just one region and other regions have Disney-esque characters
I grew up a huge Ralph Bakshi fan. My dad is real liberal in terms of counter culture back in the 70s and 80s. So, by 1991-92 (I was 14) when this film came out, he took me to see it. Needless to say, I missed a TON of the sexual references and other implications of the film...lol. Watching it all these years later with Double Toasted is like seeing it with fresh (and hilarious) new eyes.
Ralph Bakshi is one of the best adult animated directors of all time. He made the best first ever X rated movie: Fritz the Cat. Thanks to him, he changed the way of animation for adults. Plus many creators of Rick and Morty, South Park, Aqua Teen, Hunger Force and many more were inspired by the feline movie. Until in 1992, that flick destroys his career even his independence of animation even filmmaking. BTW, he wants to make another R rated film until Paramount pictures and the writers changing that film into a PG-13 movie. But damn it, man, that movie demolishing Ralph’s style. 😢 P.S. Thanks to your laughter, Billy. You made my day. 😂
My junior year of High School I went to a secondhand store that sold Music CDs, video games, and movies with some friends. I'm really missing Ninja 3: The Domination pt. 1 & 2 and Hard Ticket To Hawaii. A lot of the episodes recently disappeared. Like the whole damn library got looted and shit
Paramount Screwed Ralph Bakshi because Cool World was going to be an live action/animated slasher movie but then his script got rewritten and Kim Basinger pushed for a PG-13 rating thought it “would be great if she would be able to show this in hospitals to sick children” no I’m not kidding
I find it surprising ironic that both Double Toasted and Saberspark were going to talk about Cool World this week. And as much as Martin talked about how Cool World brought the end of 2D animation/live action hybrid movies, it wasn’t, it was Looney Tunes: Back In Action. But it still would have been cool to see more of those 2D Animation/Live Action hybrid movies.
Im not gonna front, the club scene with Holli dancing was good. I was wondering if you would ever roast this flick, and you finally have. Christmas in the summer time!

I love you guys! FYI this film was originally what would happen if our main character was basically Judge Doom. If only Ralph got to make his OG vision, it may have been an Animated/Horror classic. At least Ralph got to 🤛 out a d 💼 producer.
@@MrBrothasky Quite a few, bottom line? Bakshi originally signed on with Paramount to make a live action/animated Hybrid Horror film about a cartoonist sleeping with a toon girl and leaving giving birth to a mixed character who is considered a freak. And he goes to his dad’s world to kill him for abandoning him. Nostalgia Critic has a decent retelling of the production problems, it got so bad that Bakshi Punched the producer for changing the script in secret because he got sick of making horror films specifically Friday the 13th.
I heard that all got debunked & that he & the producer, Frank Mancuso Jr, we’re actually good friends. And that the original concept never got beyond the concept stage. Every version of the script was just revisions of what we actually got.
You guys need to cover more Bashki films. I seriously need to know what yall think of movies like Fritz the Cat, Coonskin and his version of Lord of The Rings.
I saw Cool World as a cartoon reality the artist was connected to and channeling when he drew. Left field, the Speed Force didn't exist until Barry Allen was struck by that Speed Force lightning bolt, however it always existed because it's literally what keeps the DC multiverse together.
I’ve been waiting for this bad movie roast for a long time. I saw this movie for the first time on cable, I was unsupervised and had no idea what I was watching, it became such a fever dream experience that I actually watched Roger rabbit for the first time with the assumption, it was this movie. I’m glad I was wrong
First time I saw this was with my dad years ago. This was one of the films he thought because of Holli Wood he that he need to wait to show me. Now from that standpoint he was right because younger and I would have been lost and probably fallen asleep, but when I did see it I thought it had potential but, sweet lord I have no clue what in the hell they were thinking when they came up with this film. The 90's was a fun time for film because it is filled so many WTF films that are just off the rails vs many other decades past and present that are bad for other reasons.
Yall should do a Retro movie review on a movie called "Drive," with Mark Dacoscos and Kadeem Hardison. Great martial arts choreography but I swear yall gonna see some hard inconsistencies within the first 5-10 min
I'm not sure if you can or already have, but you guys should check out Pumpkin with Christina Ricci. I think you guys would get a good kick out of the car scene. I'd suggest not looking at the trailer until you watch it. Times were really wild back in the early 2000s. All I have to say is there's no filter, it's terrible in a lot of ways, but interesting in others. I actually might watch it tonight, lol.
I don't know about anyone else, but I for one say this film _could_ and _should_ be remade/rebooted (as _controversial_ as that might sound); I feel Ralph's initial 'horror' idea for this _can_ be explored in this day-&-age. A story about a hybrid human/Doodle child who feels like it doesn't belong in _any_ world, resents its parents (especially the human father), and tries to murder its father at all costs...anyone else?

I saw this movie at 8 years old. I remember liking it because similar to Roger Rabbit which I saw first and films like the Page Master with Caulkin I loved any film that blurred the lines between animation and the real world. The game for SNES was pretty dope 😂
Instead of realized characters interacting with the humans and background like Roger Rabbit; Cool World’s doodles are like animator demo reels appearing at random. I guess that’s why they’re called doodles: look Im trying hard to make sense of this like y’all are doing!! 😂
See in the Comic Jack Draws Holli Would if she could (her full name) is a Villian yet he's surprised when the Characters start acting like their nature.
Constant and heavy studio interference killed this film. Would have loved to see what Bashki originally envisioned because the final product wasn't even close.
TBH this was kinda one of my guilty pleasure movies. I give em credit. The animation was pretty cool to watch. That's what makes me like this. I don't blame ralph bakshi for creating this disaster. This was a giant middle finger to the paramount studios for ruining his original script. Too bad we'll never see cool world done by his OG story.
If you were to experience this movie in the abstract, things make perfect sense. For example, when Holli is talking about how humans feel and taste, it's her sexual energy that is affecting the other doodles in crazy ways. That's why they are randomly appearing while she's speaking. Also Cool World transends time, which is why Brad's character is older than the artist, but doesn't look it. This is apparent throughout the movie.
You know what reminds me of those random cartoons that appears during a scene? the dt chat fam starring the og chat and the side bitches! The dt crews can talk about something but the chat sending unrelated pictures or animated gif 😂
This movie wasnt bad or wasnt good but it is decent i like the acting and the cartoon world design but the direction could have been different they need to add in the plot and there is no explanation but who framed roger rabbit was a phenomenal movie look at the dialogue, the real live cartoon and have funny memories
Roger Rabbit was created by world class cartoonists who took great pains to draw the characters matching the lighting and shading to the live action set. Cool World just vomited up a bunch of cheap doodles that don't even bother blending in to the live action.
@DoubleToasted_ can you guys roast a cult horror film called Def by Temptation, it’s a low budget indie horror film with Kadeem Hardison, Samuel L. Jackson and Bill Nunn that was made in the late 80’s but was released in 1990 when it was distributed by Troma (studios like New Line Cinema was considered to distribute the movie but was turned down)
Besides Slash in this movie and Pee Wee from Bebe's Kids, what was with Paramount's obsession with putting in sassy talking babies in their two adult aimed animated movies? Did they really just think Roger Rabbit was successful because it had a talking baby in it?
I used to watch this crap with Pop Pop. We both preferred Who Framed Roger Rabbit over this. When watching clips from this review, I realized that a lot doesn’t sit well with me and other images got me thinking WTF.
This could be a good remake and potentially new sequel in 2 ways. The professor invited portal travel for fun and cause several people in the “real world” to be zapped there and trapped as the professor got zapped and died and causes both worlds to shatter as both people in both worlds can’t function or handle the function and this could be a conflict in the movie or Jack is crazy after killing his mother and we don’t know if the doodles are real or not and if jack lost his mind after coming from the war and losing his mother
And Holly-wood looks worse when she turns doodle again. Is that the consequence LOL? I saw this movie as a kid at a driven-in and we had no idea what was going on. I thought it was gonna be like Who Framed Roger Rabbit lol
I'm so glad ye talked about the random shit on screen around 45:00, I watched this with my friends on a pandemic stream and that was one of the main things we were riffing on. Just big heads and shit flyin about the place for no reason.
Honestly this movie could have been so much better. If you look at the production story of this movie the original vision Ralph Bakshi was completely different. It was originally a much darker horror style movie for adults. But the studio wanted a new Roger Rabbit and the actress playing Holly wanted a more child friendly movie she could show to children in the hospital. So they fucked this movie completely up, which made Ralph Bakshi say "fuck it" and also fucked up the movie by putting in as much random stuff that he could into the movie.

I wonder what happened?
Ah, the grungy filter, the janky rotoscoping, the overly edgy lighting, the pounding Ministry/MLWTTKK rivethead soundtrack…

I guess Kory and Martin don't remember Jerry from Tom & Jerry tap dancing with Gene Kelly back in 1945?🐭🤗👞🎵
Paramount Screwed Ralph Bakshi because Cool World was going to be an live action/animated slasher movie but then his script got rewritten and Kim Basinger pushed for a PG-13 rating thought it “would be great if she would be able to show this in hospitals to sick children” no I’m not kidding
I like KB, but what was she thinking? Personally, I like Cool World. But, the innuendo is not kid friendly. 😂
That's why he quitted.
Ralph had enough of this b.s. and
Quitted.
TBH i cannot blame him considering how the studio, the writers and even an actor took his passion project and made it into an disaster
Keep in mind this came out 11 years after heavy metal and 2 years after Roger rabbit
Christmas in the summer time!
as a kid, i never remembered or cared if this movie was good or not. i just wanted to see the big boobed and bootied cartoons women in tight clothes
I remember my grandma renting this movie for my sister and I thinking it's going to be like Rodger rabbit but when the sex scene came on she rush to the TV and hurry and turn it off 🤣
I saw this movie at age 6 and the sex stuff went over my head.

I just love the fact that it takes them half an hour to get through the first 10 minutes of the film.
I love you guys! FYI this film was originally what would happen if our main character was basically Judge Doom. If only Ralph got to make his OG vision, it may have been an Animated/Horror classic. At least Ralph got to 🤛 out a d 💼 producer.
Is there a video or something that tells the tale of what could have been? I'm intrigued.

The black kid looking at the camera reminded me of the black kid in the opening of patton
Bryne's character had visions of Cool World and turned them into a comic book, it was always there he could just "see it" in his visions
41:14 Martin’s laugh is great💜🪩🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Cool World existed but Gabriel Byrnes character got visions from it and he believes it's hls creation
Exactly
They literally play that scene but then don't play the explanation.

Korey was straight foolin'! This is one of the FUNNIEST roasts! 😂

ETA: forgot I got my username from this horrible movie, except “I won’t.” 😆
I want a remake of this movie. One of my favorite movies, as a kid.
Based on what I saw in this review: Who was this film for?
Only Ralph Bakshi.
I may be late to the party noticing this, but does anyone know why all videos between a year to two months ago have been completely wiped?
I saw this movie at 8 years old. I remember liking it because similar to Roger Rabbit which I saw first and films like the Page Master with Caulkin I loved any film that blurred the lines between animation and the real world. The game for SNES was pretty dope 😂
Instead of realized characters interacting with the humans and background like Roger Rabbit; Cool World’s doodles are like animator demo reels appearing at random.
I guess that’s why they’re called doodles: look Im trying hard to make sense of this like y’all are doing!! 😂
A prime example as to why we get Indie Films now, too many interferences with Hollywood Executives. 😑
The backgrounds were awesome when the actors weren’t around.
See in the Comic Jack Draws Holli Would if she could (her full name) is a Villian yet he's surprised when the Characters start acting like their nature.
💀💀☠️☠️☠️ this best part of my life is watching bad movie reviews 😂😂😂
Dang dawg
The thing about this movie is. How did Brad Pitt exist before the comic book was created?
Now they GOTTA do Roger Rabbit after this! This is my SHIT!!!🎉🎉🎉
It’s about time DT covered this! Cool World is legitimately a terrible film. It did introduce me to Thrill Kill Kult’s music which is a plus 🤘🏽

This movie wasnt bad or wasnt good but it is decent i like the acting and the cartoon world design but the direction could have been different they need to add in the plot and there is no explanation but who framed roger rabbit was a phenomenal movie look at the dialogue, the real live cartoon and have funny memories
12:57 Martin had me dying laughing
Roger Rabbit was created by world class cartoonists who took great pains to draw the characters matching the lighting and shading to the live action set.
Cool World just vomited up a bunch of cheap doodles that don't even bother blending in to the live action.
I used to always mix Cool World up with Who Framed Roger Rabbit as a kid 📼📺👀🤷♂️💯💯😄😄😁
Makes sense. I was into both of them. ❤

I'm surprised "Fritz the Cat" didn't make a cameo in this flick.
R crumb wouldn't have allowed it
@@notchuckproductions5029 true, but Ralph Bakshi is that special kinda crazy to not care & put him in anyway lol

@@FaceFamous indeed.
45:13 I wonder if there was a "make it more cartoony" Studio Note
Honestly this movie could have been so much better.
If you look at the production story of this movie the original vision Ralph Bakshi was completely different. It was originally a much darker horror style movie for adults.
But the studio wanted a new Roger Rabbit and the actress playing Holly wanted a more child friendly movie she could show to children in the hospital.
So they fucked this movie completely up, which made Ralph Bakshi say "fuck it" and also fucked up the movie by putting in as much random stuff that he could into the movie.
Man, I haven't watched this movie in such a long time. I loved it as a kid.
So, the Double Toasted crew has found out about 'Cool World'.
