Massive respect to James and Roger, a shame that a super individual and craftsman like James cannot trade against the typical crap that is the building trade in the domestic market, I often imagine I was able to choose a builder to build for me James would have been at the top of the list! The Company that now has James as an employee has hit the jackpot, best wishes James and well done Roger and Dylan for this video, it is in my opinion a snap shot of our industry in so many ways, skillbuilder the channel is rightfully the voice of the industry and as I said in the start of this comment Respect....
Huge respect for talking about this I packed up 4 years ago We were going really well like yourself But the stress levels were intolerable And the strain on my family was not good So I went back working for someone else was very hard to start with but you have to man up and get on with it But im so much happier now Good luck with the future 👍
Could not have said it better myself Robin, a truly great craftsman who you can trust to be fair and produce quality work, its such a great shame and like you he would certainly have been one of my first choice suppliers to work with. James the very best of luck in your new venture, enjoy what I hope is a reduced stress level and more regular terms and conditions. You would make a brilliant Project Manager in my business.
Absolutely gutted for you James , The trade just lost one of the best for sure . Best of luck with the new job buddy . All the best Steve and Alex 🙏🧱👍🏼
What an absolute shame but I can tell you I went down that same path many years ago. Several limited companies went down the pan owing me money within a couple of months of each other and my smaller jobs were just not making money, I was just too cheap, even though the cowboys were throwing in the jobs taking the money and running away, my concience just wouldn't allow me to do that. I decided one evening to just throw in the towel and look for a job. Had to get a £15000 bank loan to pay suppliers and VAT unfortunately but I have never looked back. Company van, reasonably paid, paid overtime, paid pension and holiday pay, no slaving over a hot laptop in evenings doing quotes that I know I'm going to be undercut. You made the right decision mate, I take my hat off to you. You gave it your best shot and can look back and say proudly that you did this. One thing I can't recover is how I missed my kids growing up because I was always working. Best of luck to you James and thankyou for your entertaining videos of past, I'm sure I speak for thousands of your fans, you will be missed. 👍👍👍👍
Funny you replied as I was only thinking while watching this how a guy like James would fit in well with a legit company with high standards like A&E 😉
I felt quite emotional watching that. What a loss to the industry James as a builder is. A tradesman through and through, turning out quality work and giving the customer the best job he can give. On the other hand, the company that has employed James has gained and hopefully he can pass on his experience and passion for the industry to others and I truly hope being employed takes some of the pressure off James and he can rest easy on a night without the worries of running a business. All the best mate, I thoroughly enjoyed watching you and Ian work.
I was concerned a few months back when you were ill from being stressed and run down. To also not be given an interview with your experience annoys me, experience over qualifications all day long, but im glad someone took you on. Good luck.
James, sorry to hear of your bad news. Hopefully for you and your family it is a blessing in disguise. I only know you from watching this channel. But I can tell that you are a decent gentleman and also a very talented builder. I wish you every success along this new Avenue that you have chosen to take.
The company that has employed James has found a star..his commitment to his trade is 2nd to none..and I wanted to get James round for a quote on an upcoming loft extension later this year..to find someone of his quality and reliability is extremely difficult for us customers…James I wish you all the very best Stay Well.
Such a legend, it’s been great to see James grow in confidence in front of the camera, I know it’s scary from experience. His knowledge, skill, experience and ability on a broad range of tasks is the most amazing thing thing about James. It will be great to continue to see / hear James on the channel (and Ian for that matter). All the best.
Really appreciate what James brought to skill builder. Seems like a genuinely nice guy and quality tradesman! he looks like a weight has been lifted off his shoulders in this video though and I can understand why. The building industry in the UK is a tough place to operate and I can really see the appeal of taking a job on the books. I wish him all the best and would love to see him back on the program in the future to see how he's getting on.
Sorry to hear of James' troubles. His and Ian's standard of work was always great, just a shame he couldn't weather the storm. But his personal life has got to come first! Good luck!
Good for you James As a Christian builder myself I understand how hard it can be ,but god is a faithful god and always blesses the faithful Good Luck in your new job and God bless you and your family
You were a fantastic ambassador for the building trade and I can't imagine how difficult it was for you to call it a day. I really enjoyed your journey, learnt a few things and admired your 'can do' attitude. You will be missed but I wish you and your family the very best.
Please pass on to James that I found him an inspiration and a role model. Such a hard working honest guy, top quality work and a great can do attitude. Really sorry that circumstances didn’t work out for him. I will miss his videos, kept me motivated and positive during some tough times. His new employer is onto a good thing with James. All the best buddy!
Good luck mate , and if the kitchen firm goes “pop” don’t worry about it , there are plenty of jobs outside the building game as well , keep smiling and treat people with respect and things will always come along . 👍
Seeing James’s work ethos and attention to detail over the years he will certainly fit in well with a German company. All the best for the future James 👍
He only lasted a matter of weeks with them and is now back as a self employed one man band. He earns more than he ever did as a builder and has a stress free life. We can't tell you what he does but it is legal and honest. He just doesn't want hundreds of builders following him.
"Where's James?" "Hello mate!" Thank you for all the videos, it was a pleasure to watch you work and always clear how much you cared about the finished product. Your new company has got a top-notch new employee. Good luck for the future, I hope you enjoy it.
It's a shame, but as a retired accountant, I'm not that surprised. So many builders have moaned about the value of doing extensions and that it's not really worth them getting out of bed. If we don't want to lose more skilled people like James, people will have to pay the real cost and realise that material quotes can't be set in stone. Good luck James and hope to see you soon.
Yep people will have to pay and they have actually started to a little bit, I’ve put my prices up for the past 2 years now, lost some trade but still coming out with a 25-30% increase in profit over the year.
A bitter, sweet end really. The bitter is that honesty doesn’t seem to pay and James’s skill set is off site. The sweet is that James is a role model of a nice person and a tremendous tradesman and hopefully all works out well for him. All the best top man. Don’t hide away James. 👍
Sad James had to go through that, but I can imagine he'll be happier in his new job. Building and business don't necessarily have too much overlap in terms of temperament and skill set. Especially if you're a nice guy like James. Cheers from Canada
I'm totally shocked that a general builder of James's caliber couldn't make it work! Every aspect I saw he was top drawer and his customers were very lucky to have found him! Maybe the attitude in the UK of beating builders down for cheaper and cheaper quotes has something to do with it? Quality costs money! Good luck in the future James!
This is gut wrenching news, I cannot believe that a lovely bloke like James could not continue to do what he does with such distinction. Roger, James, Ian, Robin have all become some of my favorite UK tradesmen. Best of luck to all of you!!!
Very sad to hear, all the very Best James , You can hold you head up high as your work was top class , you just were not charging enough . its so hard to get it right I have under priced a few tiny jobs and ended up working for peanuts but i had to do the right thing and smile and finish the job . At least for me they were small so could recover and learn for the next one . On the size of projects you took on it is so easy for it to go wrong fast and big numbers. The kitchen company you are with are lucky to have you for sure !!
Good luck James. Top Fella, and the geezer you'd want doing your buliding work. Thourougly enjoyed your projects over the last couple of years. Good luck for the future!
This shocked me when watching this but shows the reality of the other side of the camera. Good luck to you James was good watching your skillset on the videos
Been through the same situation 4 years ago James, moved on to work outside the building industry. Miss being on site but don't miss the business! Good luck to you fella hope you have as much success as I have since I made the change!
James will be missed from skill builder, i loved the videos of the build. Lots of helpful details from him and always had a smile on his face. I dont think i have ever seen anyone so positive. Best of luck with the new career James and hope to see you back on skill builder very soon.
Such a shame but I’m glad he’s come out the other side with what sounds to be a good job. Well deserved after such a hard time. All the best for the future James 👍
Rest in Peace James... Oh he's not dead? Thank God for that! I was nearly crying at the end with that montage haha. Good luck and I do hope to see you back. Was a pleasure watching and learning from you.
Please wish James ever success in the world from a retired tradesman, it was always a joy and a pleasure to watch all the videos that featured him. A true gentleman and a genuine guy. All the best.
Very sorry to hear this sad news. I always enjoyed watching James and liked his cheerful nature and high quality work. I am not surprised he’s a man of faith - as a believer myself I will be praying for him. This storm will pass. Stay strong, James, and I look forward to future updates 🙏🏻👍
Loved seeing you on the videos. Hope to see you soon James.Start your own UA-cam channel on the side. You'd make absolutely amazing "How to's" and all those great tip and tricks from your massive experience. I shall pray for your success.
Wow that’s depressing. I am only a keen DIY er but I was very impressed with the quality of the work. Struck me as a great builder to engage. All the very best for a more straightforward life as an employee .

Best of luck James, Skill builder is one of my favourite UA-cam channels (even though I haven't worked in construction for years now) . It sounds like you made the right decision I did something similar recently and not regretting it so far. I've really enjoyed your input and content on the channel and I hope as Roger mentions you still appear in a slightly different capacity.

Cash flow due to changing world, plus running business while being one of the tradespeople, plus family, plus costs putting roof over your family's head, plus doing everything legit and going a bit above & beyond - something snaps. So pleased for James that he has been able to find work, but equally upset that his firm went under. James is such a craftsman - love watching him work.
Really glad he's worked things out, he's definitely one of the good guys. An absolute diamond tradesman. The industry just lost a very talented honest guy. Please pass on my best wishes to him and hope to see him in the future.👍👍👍
I totally get James.every now and then I’m in the same place and moments away from writing down cv and selling the Buisness but I can’t see myself going and working for someone else … James is a real good honest tradesman and will do well where ever he goes good on you mate good luck

I agree. I bet his new employer is reaping the rewards of James experience. Probably the best decision as a business they ever made.
Absolutely gutted for you James , The trade just lost one of the best for sure .

Lovely comment.
Great comment..
Good luck James. The quality of your work shone through in every episode.
I was wondering what happened to James. I'm so happy to hear that he's doing well! It would be great to see him with Skil Builder, in any role.
He is clearly a decent worker with sound morales, all the power to him
James you are and always will be a Legend of a tradesmen, I wish you all the best on your new path all our Love and best Tony and family 👍
Funny you replied as I was only thinking while watching this how a guy like James would fit in well with a legit company with high standards like A&E 😉
