I graduated from High School in 1978 and man a a lot has changed! Did I notice the changes? ya somewhat. Like when 8 tracks went to cassette then to CD. Also noticed when pay phones started disappearing. Technology came slower then it seemed unlike now when as soon as you get your knew smartphone it's already obsolete! : )
Wow, thanks for the memories, I celebrated my 21st birthday in 1978! Grew up in L.A. at the right time. Wonderful time to be young and enjoy life. To all the young people of today, remember this, the best time of your life will be all those times that you share with your family and friends, cherish them because time will pass by very quickly! May the Lord God Bless you all and receive Salvation through the Lord Jesus Amen!
I moved to Los Angeles at the age of 20, a year after this was filmed. I know how you felt, Wonder Tech. The summer of '79 was the best Summer of my life! Young, good looking, & healthy! If i knew then what I know now; you might have seen me on the big screen! But, being brainwashed by my family; I settled for a couple of construction jobs on Sunset!
11 months ago that may have been true, but the generation that's young now has been cheated out of the good times of youth that we enjoyed. This is the worst time of life, for all of us

I was at Universal Studios a lot in 1978 and 1979. I was a kid and my brother and I would walk there from where we lived in North Hollywood. The Avalanche Tunnel towards the end of the video would make me dizzy. They turned that part into a Battlestar Galactica theme around 1979. It was really cool for it’s time. There was a full size Cylon with the red eye going back and forth standing guard at the entrance.
Thanks for the memories! I took the same tour twice in the mid to late 70s & never looked at movies the same again - pun intended. I remember an avalanche of styrofoam boulders from Earthquake & a Jaws inspired great white shark attack. I also remember some giant silverware from The Time Tunnel outside of a snack bar, the original miniature of King Kong on display & those giant creepy paintings from The Night Gallery. I still have my souvenir styrofoam boulders from the gift shop!
my first visit was in 1983 when I was stationed At Vandenberg AFB up the coast. During the summer all my friends from Rhode Island flew out and we did the LA thngs. Disney land, Universal studio, the San Diego Zoo, etc. It was so fun and different from Rhode Island where I grew up
Really nice video, captures a fascinating era from the city's rich and colorful history. I like that the vid's silent, and there's no noise to ruin the mood and vibe of the clip.
I look at videos like this, and remember in the late 70's when I started as a flight attendant, when I'd travel to major US cities, how dirty and crumbling most of them looked, and how I couldn't wait to get home to L.A with it's wide, even beautiful streets as well as warmth and friendliness. Now, many of those cities have revitalized and my hometown is starting to look like something out of post apocalyptic movie. I still love it though...it will always be home.
Look at all that open land....I remember farms is Cerritos and Lakewood....There was a big Farm on the west side of the 91 fwy in Cerritos ..I think Pops paid a little under 6 k for our house North Downey around 1957...Close to I-5 and a easy hop skip and jump to Times Mirror in Boyle Heights...LA Times had the contract for every county in the Country that had Yellow Pages! Yep if you let your fingers do the walking any time between 1946 and 1984 chances are 1 in 8 it came off my Dad's press at 1115 S.Boyle....Eric Underwood class of 81 Downey High School
I was new to LA in 1978 with my first corporate job out of college on Wiltshire blvd. I can remember seeing John Madden walking down Wiltshire while I sat in my corporate lunchroom at Wiltshire and Normandie
I worked just up the block on Bunker Hill in the Financial District for 13 years. From 2010-2023. It's amazing to see how much the area had changed over this time. Yet also how many of the older buildings are still there and have been restored and renovated. And the skyline of course has filled in a lot with many new modern mostly residential high rise condos and the over 1,000 foot Intercontinental hotel.
Cant believe this was taken back in 1978 even before I exist in this world.. aka I was born in April 8 1989 Sat.... LA streets and buildings havent changed that much since then IMO.....
I remember LA in '78, I lived in Mar Vista, on Inglewood Ave. & Venice Blvd. Took the RTD #75 bus to Fairfax caught the #89 bus to Beverly Blvd, then walked about 2 blks west to work, Beverly Palms Rehabilitation Hospital, (1974-79), then, moved to Long Beach July '79. Still there. When I couldn't catch the Bus, I rode my Schwinn Continental 10 speed Bike, with a nice rack and generator light, cost me about $125, lot of $$$ for me then.( Got it in 1976).stolen a couple of years later. Anyway, late '70's LA still wasn't too bad in some spots.
It would be terrific if you had sound recording equipment along with your movie cine camera. I'd really love to hear the sounds and noises of the times and place. A very enjoyable home movie indeed, thanks for sharing!!!!!
The hospital is long gone, it had about 45 beds or so, met Monty Hall( let's make a deal fame) and a few other celebs stayed their Totie Fields( comedienne) old time., Ariel Durant( wife of Author, Will Durant).
"Psycho" house in its earlier location at 3:09 and 6:01 ... they've moved it since then and also rebuilt the Bates Motel, which had been torn down at the time this footage was taken.
I'm watching this thinking while this is being filmed somewhere out there is some kid, a 23 year old guitarist from Pasadena, waiting to take over the world..
And the black guy that used to stand on the corner with a baseball glove pitching and catching imaginary baseballs! I saw a poster of him that said "different strokes for different folks" I worked Hollywood for the entire 70s with the gas company and saw a lot
Born and grew up in LA and the San Gabriel Valley throughout the entire '60s and '70s. Exactly how I remembered it.
Same here. The Los Angeles I knew growing up.
The most amazing thing is that we don't notice is when, everything changes...

It's been a long time since I've been on the Universal Studios Tour, but I don't recall the tram tour being that extensive. Good, old, 8mm film. :)
