5 minute Challenge - Saab 9-3 Spark Plug Replacement

- The Lockemeister threw down the challenge (see link for a much more informative video that this one) that this can't be done in 5 minutes. I throw caution to the wind. For entertainment purposes only. Do not try this at home!
Sir...that was awesome! I had a good feeling you were going to get it before I even started your video. Well done and entertaining.
So it's not a 5 minute job. It's a 4 minute 49 second job. Lmao great vid
I thought that was a fantastic idea and inspiration, particularly because of the weather and my 2004 Saab 9-5 desperately needed new plugs. I wanted to see how close to 5 minutes I could get. It took me 6m25s.
To address some comments:
I didn't have power tools.
I had an additional 1m10s setup for tools & stop clock.
I stopped the clock and started the car, on-off several times & took/tested her out; that was about 10 min.
I didn't immediately put my tools away, as I went to work on my 1988 Honda Hawk GT650 motorcycle, but I imagine it, like setup, takes about a minute.
Total time, as a solid job, < 20 minutes-it took longer to warm up afterwards! I have video, perhaps I shall post :)
Extra credit for hopping in and turning it over. Nice speed.
Thanks for uploading. Great video and great job. I can't help to replace mine myself next time.
I started getting some really bad shudder under load in my '04, which I thought was a bad coil pack. Bought a complete set from a salvage place up in Spring Lake Park, and it didn't make a difference. I wasn't rushing when I replaced the plugs(had them already, just wanted to isolate if it was coils or plugs), but having just done the coils, I am sure it was under 10 minutes. BTW - not 100% sure they are the same coils as on your '06, but I have 4 on the shelf if you ever need one.
Did you figure out that the problem is/was, Tim?
Matthew Brenengen yes - sorry for the lack of clarity - I tried the coil packs first, but it was the plug(s) that was/were the problem.
Tim Honl Plugs are much cheaper than coil packs. I've read you should always go for the least expensive things first when troubleshooting engine problems. Great video by the way.
That's great, but I said an hour and clearly stated a person doing the job needs time to select the tools, and when finished put the tools away and to clean up. I also greased the coil towers and carefully inspected each plug for each cylinder and used a torque wrench. The torque wrench is optional but I like to use it. Anyway, what I mentioned is that it's all part of the job the way I see it. So your digital timer should have started with you walking, or running into the garage like a monkey, selecting the tools, doing the job and also included putting the tools away and cleaning up. My criteria included all of that. and also included taking the car for a short test drive after washing up. Can you imagine yourself having to use the car the next day without even testing it and you have to drive to work and you have a plug misfiring? So do the video again with the criteria that I originally challenged with a test drive and not your cheatin' and lets see how long it takes, ok? You didn't even start the engine to see if it idled smoothly and I took the car for a short test drive. ua-cam.com/video/vly7LNiZJJE/v-deo.html
BTW haste makes waste as some wise one said below. Rush and crack an insulator on a new plug, then how long will it take, two days? BTW I didn't use power tools since perhaps others don't have the tools to use. It's a good video you made and kinda entertaining but also false in how you cheated..
True - I also didn't include the time it took to purchase the spark plugs, learn what all the tools do, and grow tall enough to reach the engine. Not hatin' on you LM. Hats off to your methodical process!
you do a disservice to people viewing your video and then try to beat the clock and do something like cross thread a plug.
+Lockemeister Like I say in the video, what I am doing is a BAD idea. I think they get that.
whatever you say, chief
He is a renegade and he knows it...
I heard sirens...Someone must have called 911 'cause that drill was on FIRE!!!!
Nice. I'm replacing my plugs and coils on my '07 60th Anniversary 9-3, this weekend. 1 hour every 174k miles is a small price to pay. Auto shop wants to charge $900. I can do it for $325 in parts.
jeffel80 39 bucks on Amazon buddy
It takes me five minutes to find my 10mm...
Your hired
Great job!!!
Ok so if my 4th ignition coil needs replacing, do I have to take off 1-3 first or can I just replace the 4th one solo without touching the others?
trencher7 Sure. They are each individual components.
You did it, man!!!
Awesome job wished my car mechanic was this fast, at 100$ / hour I'd have my full money worth :)
How much HP gain does the spider add?
lol
1 SP (spider power).
who needs turbo when u can get spider power lol
The first Four screws you unscrew are too worn out for me to be able to unscrew. Ideas? Drill right through?
This is freaking great
You tryed on the v6
LOL well done. The Lockemeister was proved wrong!
why should we change the Spark Plug Please? Thanks.
The electrodes degrade over time (so they say). Mine had 100,000 miles on them, and didn't look too bad. I was getting a misfire code, and so I started with replacing the plugs.
Thanks!
Matthew Brenengen did it solve the issue? Did u get a checck engine light?
Nice job changing those out, but you didn't grease the rubber ends of the coils packs and you also didn't use a torque wrench or inspect anything.... Even if you would have done those, I would guess you could have done it less than 10 minutes which isn't bad timing. I always say, "haste makes waste". I like to do the job right and check everything the first time and not have to pay expensive repairs later for something simply overlooked. Good Job though ;)
It works better when you have all the tools, including power tools, lined up in front of you like magic before you start and not bothering to wash up after wards.
Also a time saver, not even bothering to take the car for a test drive.
i have the same rigid drill set and they are awesome. was thinking I could do it in five with my drills too xD
Be careful - it is easy to cross thread or otherwise strip and wreck the spark plug holes in your cylinder head, which would not be a happy thing to do.
Cool can you come and do mine .Under 5 min hardly worth charging for , right?!?!?
I want to see this "5 min job " being done just with a wrench not with 2 power drills and ten other tools that are set up already just to be used.
I just posted:

I have a saab 2007 Aero 2.8L v6 and i am having trouble with the coolant expansion tank i have replaced one it split in half and the coolant was all over the engine then i replaced again about 4 months ago just happened again today, i am getting frustrated with it if you have any suggestion please let me know. Thank you
Rockstar S Sorry. Can't help you on that one.
Torque specs setting?
NVM, I missed it but it's on 0:18. Thanks!
nice ! way to go.
So cranked up my 06 93 aero 2.8 and it's jerking pretty bad it doesn't die and keeps going what could be the problem
Did you get all the plug wires back on the correct plugs? It also sounds like bad coils.
I haven't changed the plugs are wires yet this just happened to me yesterday. I'm just curious as to what the problem may be since I've already put 4k into the car the past few months I've had it I'd like to try fixing it myself now
@@mbrenengen this just happened yesterday I haven't done anything to it yet I'm hoping it's a simple fix since I've already out 4k into it
Loved the video! I have a Saab just like yours and the problem that I am having is that when ever I Excelerate above 2000 rpm my cars engine feels like it's choking! I have replaced the air filter and the problem still exist do you know what could be causing this issue? Thank you for your help!
+chris taylor Really, I have no idea. It could be the fuel filter, I suppose.
+Matthew Brenengen thank you for your respond!
+Chris Taylor- Did you figure out the problem with your car. I am experiencing the same issues as you.
I have also this problem. I've replaced the vacuumtubes and bypass valves but no luck, I'm going to try replacing the spark plugs...will take me alot more than 5 min thou :-D. a friend had the same problem and solved it just by switching to a higher octane gasoline (from 95 to 98) you could give that a try, low risk for damage so if it doesn't work you can just switch back.
+aldermania change your spark plugs change your fuel filter put a new air filter as well and I think the problem is going to go away mine runs like a champ now I hope this works for you please keep me posted
Love this lol
4:49,9 min PLUS the time it took you to make the tools ready...so NO, you didn't make it in 5 minutes.. 😂😂
Ah ha. But do I have to also include the time it took to learn how to turn a wrench? Or grow tall enough to reach the floor? Hmmmmm.
@@mbrenengen
Haha Sour loooseeerrr!! 😂😂😂
The video is inaccurately titled; it should note that the plug change is for 2.0 L engines but not the V-6 2.8 L, which is considerably more involved. This will make some wonder WHAT ELSE about this vid is inaccurate (?).
Right...
That was valid
Plug socket star driver bit and size 8 socket that’s it no big thing
My torque bolts for this cover wont come out.. any suggestions??
Redloh Made It Make sure you have the correct size torx drive. If you have a little electric impact like used that helps but there is no reason they should.not come out with the right amount of persuasion.
tried it all... correct size and all. theyre seized in there like ive never seen :(
Redloh Made It Torch?
thats my next move hahah
Did you gap the spark plugs?
azucena vera You don't gap these.
*Crying in Swedish*. Wrong plugs for that car, and not checking the gap, and was that zink paste ?!?... Poor car

😂 I LIKE THIS GUY 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😂🤣😂🤣
I did mine in lime 7
Now try this on my v6 aero engine. It took me 45 minutes.
Still, that's great! Much better than taking it to a dealer.
I'm about to try it on my 06 93 aero v6 2.8lt I'm worried
@@JR-os1dg well let me know if you need any help.
👏🏾
Chevy Sabbs suck, 900SE Talladega for me!!
