Pokemon trainer is still a very bad character in competitive multiplayer, and the single player rebalancing is not a factor there.

Is Ivysaur actually optimal for this run, or is it just a preference choice?

Ivysaur is by far the best character in every main single player category where you get to choose characters. (Which are 3 out of the 4 main categories)
Which is All Star, Clasic Mode and All Events, where all the WRs are held by me and ivysaur together with a big time gap.
The only category where no character is really the best is story mode any% because the game gives you a selection and you mostly just use the one that allows you to skip something or is not a bad character.

Smash rebalances move data for single-player modes, so character choice matters a lot less than you'd think. Good thing, too, because Brawl Ivysaur is one of the worst characters in series history.

Probably optimal, I doubt many characters have an OHKO up smash

@@snuffysam there are many who have a side ohko smash but lack in everything else, especially when stages are cut of sideways.
Ivysaur allrounds in being good at the end and having the option to switch to charizard in classic mode which is the best boss killer.
Good character through all the rebalances.
There went a lot of testing into every character through this by me which is compiled in a document on src.

I would recommend looking at the story mode aswell as classic mode runs.
Then you will see how insane it can get.

Ich als Deutscher fand den harten Deutschen Akzent am Anfang gewöhnungsbedürftig, aber die mitreißende Art wie kommentiert wurde hatte auf jeden Fall Charme. Ich könnte mit solch einer Sicherheit jedenfalls nicht kommentieren.
Hat Spaß gemacht jemandem dabei zuzusehen, wie er absolut in seinem Element ist (kleiner Pokemon-Pun ;))
