Master Your Voice Complete Singing Course: ramseyvoice.com/special-offer
Choosing a song that actually fits your voice is one of the most important skills you can have as a singer
Not only can you use this info to help you pick out cover songs that fit your voice, or maybe help you if you’re in a karaoke crisis
But it can even help you WRITE songs that better fit your voice
If you’re a songwriter then you’ll know that it totally sucks to write a song that sounds amazing, but then you have to record it just to realize that you can’t sing some of the notes
My very first step in choosing a song that fits your voice is probably the most controversial, but here goes:
    1. Choose a song that matches your gender
    2. Choose a song in your style
    3. Find your vocal range
    4. Find your tessitura--know where your voice sounds good
    5. Find the range of the song
    6. Look at the music for any trouble spots
    7. Choose a song you’re passionate about

I have a hard time with not song shopping outside your gender, but I think that has more to do with my range being on the low end for female presenting vocalists. Most of the time E3 is comfortably in my bottom end, and I'm way more comfortable singing on the lower end of my register. So, it's VASTLY easier for me to find male presenting vocalists in that range 😅

You can sing any song in the original music even, but you gotta find your melodies and key within that original music that fit. I wouldn't go too high or higher than my comfortable range when I sing Mariah -- wouldn't go crazy in the latter fourth and fifth octave that's for sure. My tessitura is mostly in the third octave. I sing some male songs just fine as long as I avoid imitating the low notes (usually few) that I cannot afford to reach. I can sing "I Write Sins..." comfortably without hurting, but the lower notes aren't going to be as resonant as a male could sing.

I cant find any other way to write to you lol. I came to you bc I fell in love with piano. I just started lessons from an amazing teacher online. And I got so excited I wanted to learn a song that touched my Dad in church when he accepted Christ. It's called Run to the Father. His birthday is literally weeks away in April. So I dont know if I will get the song perfectly by then haha probably not. BUT! latley I've been singing the song more and more. And thought, hey even tho I dont have a voice, maybe I can sing while I play. That's hard to do on it's own. But singing GOOD and playing piano? Even harder oi.... well I started youtubing voice exercise videos and came across alot of yours. It's been maybe 4 days since I started some and I FEEL better when I sing. Again I dont have a good voice, I have a deviated septum , I am always nasally when I speak, always congested and inflamed in my sinuses and I always have flem ( tmi) in my throat and always have to cough an sneeze ( trust me I wont know how I really can sound and I'll never sing my true best unless I get surgery which I cant afford) but I still feel better with some of your videos. Suprised me. Everytime I think it will sound better bc i feel better lol it still isnt sounding how i am hearing it sound in the shower haha. Sounds better to me in the shower. It is however getting better than it was. I wish I could get singing lessons but atm since I spent so much on the piano bundle lol... I'll have to do youtube. Curious if you have any suggestions since it's only weeks away lol. Noone can learn to sing in weeks I know. But anything helps! So figured I'd ask. >

Great video! Thanks to this I've been taking more seriously the method of choosing songs and I've recently found tons of songs that fit my voice perfectly and I love to sing. I especially wonder about the vocal range/tessitura thing. Do all the songs I sing have to have at least one or two notes that fall out my tessitura? Because I find it really harsh to hit notes out of my tessitura while singing. For example, I tried to sing Thinking Out Loud by Ed Sheeran, which sits good for my vocal range until the chorus hits, and there's that A4 note that is quite high for me and I have to strain in order to reach it. It sounds like Ed Sheeran strains it too, but when I strain it, it damages my voice. How can I be able to sing out of my tessitura with more ease?

I like to sing some songs by male artists, but I usually just raise them an octave since I don't have a good low range. Then its fun to sing along to the original to hear the difference, or with a guy singing it the "regular" way.

Great tips, although I don’t totally agree with the gender thing. I am a messo soprano I think, or maybe alto (my range seem to differ everytime I take these tests), and Im very comfortable with singing songs from certain bands, like f.ex The Beatles, Coldplay, Goo Goo Dolls. (Coldplay do have some pretty high notes towards the ends of songs, but its usually fine)
Female power ballads are really not my thing, they demand a stronger voice on the higher notes. Plus I don’t really like to listen to those songs either. If it’s just a ballad I often feel theres parts that goes outside of my range. Tricky. How do I find the right female voice?

Absolutely agree--I'm also a mezzo soprano who sings along comfortably with tenors. For example, one day I was listening to a retro '80s playlist, and realised that whlie singing RIGHT smack dab in my natural range, I could match George Michael and Boy George almost note for note.
Also sometimes gender-bending a song on purpose can sound surprisingly awesome, and some of the great covers out there are gender-bent (some with the lyrics changed, and some not).
And then there's the fact that there's that androgynous range right in the middle where sometimes you can't TELL a singer's physical sex by just listening, and...

I also don't agree with the gender thing. I am a female alto and I find it easy to play certain songs sung by boys. I recently started taking singing lesson and my teacher and I disagree with the choosing of songs because of this, she insists I should play songs sung by females only but she proposes ballads that I don't like and never really enjoyed listening to. It's really a struggle being a girl and an alto at the same time, it's harder to find songs to sing (especially pop, since most of the female artists are mezzo sopranos). So maybe in this situation (alto female) it's ok to sing outside of your gender right? I don't wanna sing Amy Winehouse all the time haha

Her voice is not deep enough to sound good in the opening lines, and she didn't make any key adjustments. I'm sure her audience loved it, but you can tell she was straining her voice to hit those low notes.

Don’t try to sing with a multiple singers in one song. Like an example is couple singing together or same gender singing together. Pick a song that is only one singer. I promise, you won’t succeed through multiple singer. Unless you have group of people singing with you, but there range must match.

Lots of helpful advice but I strongly disagree with the first tip “choose a song that fits your gender.” As a female (a soprano) I’ve sung many songs by male singers and have just gone up one octave higher maybe or just sang it in a different key if necessary and had no problem whatsoever. If you really love a song then I think you can make it work for your voice though it may just mean singing it in a different key. If you’re a beginner then maybe that isn’t a great place to start but I think this is something most singers can probably learn to do.
