Have you always wanted to learn to sing better but haven't known where to start? The truth is, that anyone can learn to sing better with the right singing exercises and proper techniques.
In this video, Matt Ramsey, a vocal teacher and singing coach gives you everything you need to know to improve your singing in 2020. In this video, I wanted to give you as much information as possible about the typical vocal progression and journey that a singer goes on as they improve their voice.
We're going to improve a lot of different aspects of your singing, but don't get overwhelmed. Instead, just get curious about the areas that you need to improve on in practice.
We start off learning how to sing better by improving our posture. The right posture for singing is called a tall posture. It's also important, that you keep your larynx relaxed as you sing higher notes. Another area of posture that you need to look at is the tongue tension that comes with singing higher notes.
Next, we cover breath control. The correct breast for singing is called the diaphragmatic breath where your stomach will expand on the inhale and contract on the exhale or as you sing. I'll also give you one of my favorite exercises for improving your breath control called the farinelli breathing exercise.
In the next section it's time to train your ear. Many singers who are starting out don't actually have issues with singing on Pitch. Often times it's just they don't have the right feedback to know whether they're on the tune or not. A very simple trick that you can try is to cup your ears or record yourself to see where your on Pitch. It's also important to learn Solfege so that you can start to identify the relationships between different notes. Also consider learning an instrument to improve your ear training in your ability to learn new singing techniques.
In the next section, it's time to warm up your singing voice. One of my favorite exercises for doing that is the octave and a half lip trill where you flap your lips together while singing over an octave in a half scale.
In the next section it's important to learn to sing in different vocal registers. We'll start off by singing in the chest voice with a five tone scale on the word “Gug” as in “Gut”. Next, we'll start finding your head Voice by singing an octave down arpeggio. Finally, you'll learn to sing with your mixed voice by singing on an octave and a half arpeggio on the word “Gee” as in “geese”.
In the next section it's time to work on your vocal tone. The optimal vocal tone is not breathy or too light, it's right in the middle. One of the easiest ways to find the perfect vocal tone is by singing with your speaking voice.
In the next section, I'll teach you to sing without straining. As you start expanding your vocal range it is very common to start straining as you sing higher notes. But it's important that you learn not to push or spread those higher notes.
In the next section teach you how to sing with different vocal effects like Legato and vibrato. Legato means singing smoothly whereas vibrato is the wavering that you hear when a singer holds a single note. To find vibrato, simply pulse on your solar plexus as you hold a note.
In the next section, I'll show you how to get started singing outside of the practice room. A great place to get started is with private voice lessons either online or in person. You can also consider trying a singing course. As you're practicing your singing, it's important that you warm up for 30 to 60 minutes a day. A great place to get started and improving your singing voice from a young age is a choir. Finally, you may want to join a band at a certain point.
In the final section I'll talk you through what it takes to become an artist. In the first step, it's important that you listen to lots of great singers to remain inspired. You'll also find it helpful to choose songs that fit your voice and voice type. Finally, it's important that you find your own distinct to vocal style. You don't want to just imitate other singers, you want to learn to sing with your own voice.

What a fantastic teacher! Thank you. Im 54 and thought I was stuck with a bad voice my whole life. Last year began practicing religiously every day. Walked into a local open mic place on off hours to see what it was all about. Owner asked me if I wanted to sing a song. There was nobody else there so I felt ok trying my lifelong bad voice out. I decided to try a song I had been working on for awhile- Baker Street. I was very nervous as I had not had the confidence yet. After I finished the song, the owner told me I sounded just like Gerry Rafferty & asked me if I wanted to do a show. Me? huh? really? So fast forward to a year later and Ive done 5 shows and am still a work in progress. Once I had the confidence from the owner that day a year ago, Ive been improving with every show I do.
BUT, my bubble burst when my musician friend said, You have a good voice but if you want to continue to improve you will need to learn the technical skills (I was singing from my throat in addition to many other newbie mistakes).
Anyway, these vids are an amazing addition!!!! Thanks again for doing what you do And with a great sense of humor to boot!

Singing keeps the voice sounding young. My mother was a choir mistress. Even at 95 yrs she still sang well and her talking voice was clear and easy.
I sing for an hour every day while I walk.
I know I am warmed up when I can yodel and have a three octave range. Young Mariah Carey and Aretha Franklyn are my favourite singers. Bobby McFerrin too. Thanks for this lesson. Scat singing interests me.

Ty, this is an excellent presentation. I was a voice major way back in the 1960s, I even got a bachelor's degree in voice. I sang for decades and am now retired. You are wise to teach people the solfege system. (My dad called it "fa-so-la" and he was good at it). As we age, we tend to forget even some of our basics and form bad habits. You are right on the money! I want to encourage your followers to listen to you and practice daily. You are good at explaining a proper vocal technique and demonstrating it as well. So aspiring singers, this guy can really teach you some quality singing technique. Thank you, Ty! Enjoyed it!

I'm 61 years old (and aging fast), I write and record my own country music. I sings my songs and I'll be the first to say that I need lots of improvement to be credible as a singer/songwriter. I'm too old to think that I will be doing shows, on tour in a band, but I am hopeful someone with a great voice wants to sing one of my tunes.
That being said, (I know, I hate that term, as well)...but, I must admit this video and this gentleman seems to have a great way of expressing how one can improve their vocal technique. I am only an egg. A novice, if you will, but I appreciate this dude and his work. Thanks. I will try to learn how to sing better and NOT sound like 'geese farts on a muggy day' any longer.

Your videos make my little Speech Therapist heart happy! Did you know that working on your voice volume & pitch also improve swallowing function? Random fact I’ve picked up working with Parkinson’s and stroke patients!
Geek moment: if someone’s voice/throat is painful in the morning, but gets better throughout the day then it is most likely related to acid reflux at night. On the other hand, if your voice feels fine in the morning, but gets more painful/harsh throughout the day, then you’re likely straining your throat to get loud instead of using diaphragmatic breathing (common among teachers).

Excellent video Matt! Proper vibrato is among many vocal techniques i’ve wanted to know/master for ages! I love how you thoroughly cover the ways in which this is/can be achieved unlike so many other videos that fail to do so & instead focus on mostly irrelevant points & hardly much in the way of teaching how it’s actually done/the secret behind it. (Frustrating!) So this gives me hope that I might be able learn & achieve this to incorporate into my singing repertoire.
Music & singing is basically my biggest loves & passions in this world. I’m a relatively good singer, am not tone-deaf & can hold a tune relatively well but I cannot tell you how frustrated, upset and/or absolutely furious I have always been with myself at my vocal ability. I would really challenge any vocal teacher/anyone to convince me I don’t have a “naturally weird” & beyond help singing voice. 2 reasons I’m convinced of this: This weird natural breathiness I have whenever I sing & cannot stop/control which in return greatly affects my ability to project well enough (have strong/proper vocals) 2. Having a severely limited vocal range that forces me to have to resort to using falsetto.. I may be able to improve in small ways but as i say, i’m pretty sure my singing voice is & can only ever be OK at best..

I'm VERY new to playing music and understandings its theory. Now that I finally can play a first song on the guitar and know the lyrics, im trying to sing along. First I need to get a bit more control of my voice and you are an excellent teacher on this department. Now I need a private, sound proof space to engage in these exercises ha!
    Subscribed. Thanks!

thanks for the free video, its helpful to people who do want to get better at singing but dont exactly have the money to spend on classes! you’re entertaining as well, other videos are too serious for my liking. keep up the great work. also, do you have any tips on how to sing louder? i find myself straining when i try to sing louder

I’m so happy to have found you by accident! Your voice type lessons answered a lot of my questions as to why I can or can’t sing certain songs. Ive concluded that I may still be soprano. Or maybe mezzo soprano because I can sing Gaga and Amy’s songs pretty good. I had a cancer surgery which involved my larynx, so for 40 years I’ve been struggling to find my new voice type so that it’s not extremely painful to sing.I’ve decided to take voice lessons since I’m retired, but wondered if I could just learn from UA-cam.
