Thank you for the walking tour! Montreal seems like a quieter more chilled out city. I love how close the "beach" is to the city. Seems to be a great work-to-life balance city too
The video starts right at the corner of the 1st avenue, where my son lives. Whenever I visit him we go for a stroll on ‘la Well’. Pizzeria 900 on that first second of the video is a very nice place for eating. Nice wine selection too. Such a lively place !
Hey Dan, been watching your videos on both channels for a while. I'm from Toronto, and I visited Montreal last year and loved it. Your videos are my favourite ones about this amazing city. They're really authentic and I always look forward to them. Thanks for always sharing and please keep it up!
That beautiful former Bank of Montreal branch building on Wellington Street at 8:16 now houses microbrewery Benelux, the first establishment to obtain a bar permit in Verdun. It's a cool, casual place to have a drink inside or on a terrace.
I grew up in Verdun. Things have changed so much. I'm amazed everytime I come back. Late 90's there was a crack down on biker gangs. Then, condos started popping up everywhere. Then they ended the alcohol prohibition.
When I grew up in the 70s, you would have been considered nuts to go swimming in the St. Lawrence, and that's because until the 1980s, all of Montreal's raw sewage was dumped directly into the river. Then in the 1980s, massive interceptor sewers were tunneled along the north and south shores of the island, that bring all that waste water and rainwater to an enormous treatment plant at the eastern point of the island, where it is treated then dumped into the river. However, even nowadays, whenever there is heavy rain, the interceptors overflow and sewage is still dumped into the river, but much less than before the interceptors and treatment plant were built.
Traditionally, in French, an avenue was a street that lead up to an important monument or place, and it was usually named after what it lead up to. Now the term is simply used as a fancy word for street. One of the rare times the term is used correctly in Montreal, is McGill College Avenue, downtown (and maybe Mont-Royal Avenue in the Plateau). Originally a boulevard was the walkway on top of a military wall, but when Paris tore down their walls they build large tree-lined streets where the walls used to be, that became major thoroughfares to get around Paris, so that's where the modern sense of the word came from.
Wellington Street is ranked Coolest Street in the World by some magazines, which has led to landlord hiking the business rents for no other reason. Mission Old Brewery is not a brewery. It's a charitable organisation, helping the homeless, drug addicts, rough youths, etc. Also, I don't know about other cities, but in Montreal, Avenues are North-South and Rues (Streets) are East-West.
All those boxes should be flattened and tied together. Takes up less space on the sidewalk as well as in the trucks. All bags should be in black garbage bins.

8월달에 2주동안 그곳에서 지냈습니다..멋진 영상 감사합니다.
Wow I never knew this about Verdun! We have very close friends that live in Verdun and we will have to ask them about this!

6:44 Dan, your random thoughts are what I really enjoy most about your videos as they are what makes you such a great video creator!
Great video, man! I love Montreal. Probably my favorite city in Canada!

I love your Montreal, but I don’t speak any Canadian French. But I see from your videos that English is just fine.
8:40 Dan, is the store “vapit” on the right, the kind of store that I will not mention on this channel?
FYI Old Brewery Mission is a charity that works with homeless people not really a brewery.
That makes more sense. Still, a curious name for a charity group! 😂
@@thoughtsontravelandlife they started in a building that was an old brewery, next to the convention centre
They donate beers to the homeless? Sweet!

That's only true in parts of Montreal and some suburbs
We need a new updated city ranking in Canada
Apropos that Le Dan had le coq et le French fries in this neighborhood
