The ancient name of Bodrum is 'Halikarnassos'. It is known as 'Halikarnassus' in Turkish. The city was named 'Petrium' after the city was dedicated to St. Peter, together with the castle called St. Peter's Castle. It is said that this name changed over time to 'petrum', then 'potrum' and finally 'Bodrum'.
Bodrum is located on the lands that are the intersection point of Anatolian civilizations. Archaeological finds belonging to various civilizations such as Leleg, Carian, Persian, Doric, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman indicate that the region and its surroundings have a history of seven thousand years.
Bodrum was one of the most important port cities of the Caria Region in ancient times. Many important people such as Herodotos, known as the father of history, and Artemisia I, the first female admiral of history, lived here.
Mausoleum, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, was built in the city of Halicarnassus. The marble stones of the mausoleum, which was destroyed over time by the effects of earthquakes and invasions, were used in the construction of Bodrum Castle. Christian Knights built the castle in the 15th century. The construction was completed in a period of 100 years. The Pope distributed indulgence papers to those working in the construction of the castle in order to finish the castle. Bodrum city is the last captured Christian land on Anatolian lands. City II. Although it was besieged during the reign of Mehmed II, it could only be captured during the Rhodes Campaign of Suleiman I.
Bodrum Castle today serves as the world's 2nd largest Underwater Archeology Museum. It is the strongest surviving castle in the Eastern Mediterranean. The city of Bodrum hosts many cultural events.

Bodrum cuisine, which consists of Aegean delicacies, includes fish pastrami, grilled octopus, Cretan herb, black-eyed peas, stuffed zucchini flowers and shellfish.
However, red meat is among the indispensables of Bodrum cuisine. Çertme kebab, which is the subject of folk songs, and doner with vegetables are the main dishes. It is also useful to taste the Bitez ice cream. It has a feature that appeals to every taste.
