Players have been stealing 10-15 yards for every single throw in for decades and refs are doing nothing about it.

This is like saying "There are lots of fouls wrongly given in the middle third of the pitch every game. Why are people making such a fuss about a foul in the box?". It matters where it happens and what is being affected.

If Toney is allowed to move the ball, what's the point of putting the foam down? Either let him move the ball or get rid of the rule. You can't have both.

Foam is really for distance. He doesn't the move the ball closer just to the side. Agree with GB that if it's breaking the rules VAR should've ruled the goal out (like a keeper being off their line for a pelanty).

Trippier (who also recieved a ban for betting offences) moved the refs foam forward for a free kick against Fulham last Jan and everyone found it funny and smart, but when Toney does it hes a 'disgraceful cheat'...🙄

VAR will be used only for “clear and obvious errors” or “serious missed incidents” in four match-changing situations: goals; penalty decisions; direct red-card incidents; and mistaken identity. why didn't they check this one?

if a player moves the foam, yellow card. Simple. Trippier & Toney have both gotten away with it in the past month, and it literally renders the point of the foam irrelevant. It shouldn't come down to this, but if refs won't enforce legal free kicks, pull your team off the pitch until the ball is placed on the correct spot.

Not sure it’s player power in the Deeney situation. Ultimately they are employees, and that issue should be handled privately between Deeney and the player. If my boss had an issue with me and just called a group wide meeting to air his views, he’d be in the wrong. Possibly a far fetched example, but you get the drift. At any rate, great pod guys
Yeah Ivan Toney is a cheater, Matt Turner deserves more respect and VAR is a good thing when used properly. Life might not be fair but professional sports should be.

Watchng the replay, it's fairly obvious that Toney and the number 8 acted in collusion to distract the ref while Toney moved the foam and ball.
People need to grow up, it’s not cheating. Cheating is serious and should only be used for match fixing etc.
No, cheating is breaking the rules to gain an advantage. The rules state you take the kick from where the ref says.

Personally, I think it should be up to the ref to check that the ball is in the correct place before the free kick is taken. Players try little things like this all the time - like with throw ins for example. It annoys me that the refs VERY often let them get away with doing that, but I don't think it's the players fault for it, they try and get an advantage any way they can. I think it's the same for this free kick. Yeah, morally, maybe Toney shouldn't move the ball, but at the end of the day, he's trying something that players always do in other parts of the game, and it should be the ref that checks before he kicks the ball.

@@Do27gg Yeah, I suppose that, by definition, he did 'cheat', but there are hundreds and hundreds of players that will do something dishonestly or unfairly in order to gain an advantage. To be honest, it would be silly for someone to NOT do that when everyone else is doing it, because then you're automatically at a DISadvantage. It's a sport, people are going to try and gain an advantage when they can, and if it's against the rules, the officials should be the ones to stop them

@@Do27gg I'm on the side of the argument where I think that Toney didn't do anything wrong - I'm just saying that by definition it could be called cheating. However, again, I also agree that I think it's up to the officials to make him put the ball back. As you say, there are LOADS of ways that the players bend the rules and try to gain an advantage.

Toney's a cheat, end of story. Most reasonable people would want VAR to intervene, move the ball back, and caution the player. If the ref has drawn a line, it has to be respected. They only do this for direct free kicks outside the box, so I don't think they should be doing this for the players buying a yard in their own half.

@@kieranm2514 don't care, if it leads to a goal it should be checked and pulled back. Just as when the ball is still rolling from quickly taken free kick. It's a breach of the rules and the job of VAR to check for it. Alternativly we can just bin it completely.

Ben White has been doing this to goalkeepers for ages now. It's his role in every corner: stand your ground in front of the keeper. About 10% of the time it's given as a foul (if there's somewhat of a shove), but in most cases, when it leads to a goal, there's been absolutely nothing wrong with it. It's most certainly not a new development.

Wouldnt really call him "clever" for doing it as it is something anyone of any intelligence would think to do it however i dont have a problem with it at all as its the referees and forest who are the ones being not switched on enough to noticd it. Its like playing monopoly and you land on someones property but dont mention it and they dont realise so you go without paying them. Everyones going on about Toney moving the ball, no one has mentioned that the wall had shuffled past their foam line aswell.

the complaining is utterly ridiculous about moving the ball. this is not a penalty players are allowed to place the ball down and reposition the point of the foam is to help gauge distance. The defenders should have readjusted they saw the ball move and left the gap its on them.

Cheat is a strong word. Its gamesmanship. He did it and he got away with it. Its like a throw in, take a few extra steps. Get on with it, stop scrutinising every single little thing ffs. The ref and the forest players werent paying attention, tough luck.

every player cheats, but the modern game is such that these actions are now unlawful when they are consequential actions where VAR is available and no excuses with multiple camera angles capturing clear evidence. Imagine Toney doing this on the penalty spot when taking a penalty and the ref fails to spot it. Should it be disallowed? Absolutely, that's wat VAR is there for!
Forest can’t defend for love nor money but why are people condoning cheating? Surely top professionals in any profession should be setting the example to not cheat!? Just because it’s football it’s ok to cheat live in front of tens of thousands of spectators plus however many are paying to watch it on tv somehow makes it acceptable? If moving the ball sideways is ok then just draw 2 parallel lines not the semi circle for the ball.

I think the most disturbing thing is that VAR decided it was ok what Toney did. They have been picking on the minutest of details to cancel goals and yet they did not find this to be in the wrong?
Disturbing is it? Haha. Its a foot difference. Just like throw-in positions...it's up to defenders to appeal. There should be no VAR involved unless the balls rolling
I love how no one is mentioning the fact that the free kick is on the very edge of the box and the wall is in line with the penalty spot so the distance is 6m at best and the wall must be at least 9.15m away...
In fact, a screendump that have made the run around the 'net, from Gump'ites, 'clearly proving the cheating', equally clearly shows that the whole wall is at least a full foot ahead of the line drawn for them

Ivan Toney was lorded as if he overcame a deadly disease when in reality he was done for betting, which shouldn’t be lorded the way it was. First thing he does when he is back, he cheats. Sorry, but if that's not cheating then what the hell is? The foam is down to show explicitly where the ball must be when the free kick is taken. He not only moves it but tries to hide that but moving the foam....Because it's cheating!

Lot's of people unfortunately drink drive as well- it doesn't mean it should be tolerated.
Goalkeepers are one of the least protected players in the game(with penalty rulea and protection) if I'm being honest. Coming from an Arsenal they did what we've been doing to GK's the lasy two seasons I would be livid. When we were younger in MX playing as a GK meant being in the small area you were protected from players being cheeky. Not anymore it seems.
You can’t have a go a VAR for a ball being moved when that is not what VAR is for. Just the same as if a throw in is given to the wrong team, it isn’t in their remit! It’s the on-field refs job, can’t keep relinquishing responsibility from them
Just because the officials didn't see it and just because every other player on the planet in the history of football has done it, does not mean it is not cheating. Why does the referee mark the position of the ball and the wall if it doesn't really matter?
If you look close it looks like the defender is pushing Mcburnie and the Bowen bit if you look at it he is pulling Anels shoulder and so was put down as six of one half a dozen of the other .

Toney made a clear attempt to bend the rules and he gained an advantage from it. That is cheating. It is common, but that doesn't mean that it isn't wrong.
However, you have to question the referee as well as the Forest players. It is the referees job to enforce the rules, and the Forest players either weren't attentive to Toney's manoeuvre or clocked it, and didn't bring it to the refs attention/ adjust their wall. Also, on the topic of VAR, I don't think the rules as is allow VAR to intervene in such a situation - it is down to the referees on the field to sort it out(which is a ridiculous thing, tbh).
