    Taryl, this is another wonderful and educational video from you, thank you.
    Stating John Deere has their own factory is true. The last I knew, John Deere's least expensive model lawn tractors are manufactured by MTD. I have a cousin, he was an owner/partnership of a John Deere dealership, until he retired and sold his share. He talked about those lawn tractors being manufactured by MTD. John Deere couldn't build a lawn tractor cheap enough to compete with MTD.
    He also didn't like not having mechanic's any more. He called them "trained part replacers". It is a real shame how we have become a throwaway society. The sad part is how many younger people are perfectly fine living in a throwaway society.
    Have a great weekend.
    May God bless you and your family.

    I'm sure that you have fixed hundreds of those, Daryl. I bet you have a dedicated position for the MTD pulley modification: all tools, a custom parts organizer... And a cool fixture with dial indicators, "go-no-guages", etc. "Locked and loaded!" "Cha-Ching"$$$$$ Yeah, you even have a ultra-badass power boat that was paid for with all of them "MTD-Dollars." Hey, and every customer has nothing but great things to say about you, your shop, and how incredibly fast the repair was. No more belt flying off on a hot Saturday. No more customer's wrenches slamming into their garage wall...or kicking the dog (poor bowser). Now, and for the life of that MTD mower, it's just smiles and happiness! Yeah! Like cracking a Hamms (or a iced tea) after the lawn is mowed. Even though they paid for the boat, many house payments, etc., the customers rejoice because you hardly charged them. I forgot to add: you even paid for junior's and your fine "grill-work". Man, that must have cost more than the boat: because them chompers are perfect!

      @@Cravz69 Depends on how you get it.
      I got mine from a family who had rented a Farm stead and now had to move back into town.
      When I showed up they were loading the U- Haul and the mower was not going along for the ride.
      Got it for $600.
      For $600 it is one hell of a mower.
      Once you figure out how they work. They are simple and cheap to fix.

    Great information, Taryl. I just checked, and it looks like I have an AYP made Craftsman 42 inch cut machine. After 14 years in Louisiana, I've only had to change the 2 axle grease seals on the plastic transmission. I got mulching blades for it too. We've got to cut every 7 to 10 days down here in the subtropical heat and rain. Lately, it has been unusually cool due to frequent rain and cloudy skies. But the usual summer 'heat index' feels like temperature is around 105 degrees, due to the extremely high humidity. We use air conditioning for 8 months of the year down South. Mowing season lasts from late March until early October. I could pay to have it cut, but I'm too cheap & it only takes 35 minutes to cut a 70 X 125 lot, and blow the concrete clean.

      I found a way to these and others. It invloves the pulley off either Ford smog pump or a late model GM AC compressor. There R other pulleys U can bolt on some need to have a washer welded in em to fit that 3/8th shaft... Pulleys like the old 70 smog pumps ya just drill the center they R bolt on pulleys so ya drill the hole and done. Basically U need a 3-3/4" pulley.. If U have a JD Deere dealer near U they have a generic after market pulley that will fit that belt no mods need perfect size...

    Some of the newer, cheaper MTD Craftsman's were real junk.

Until I mowed over a vacuum type hose, with wire inside it, got it all tangled around the blades, it was fine, aside from the original tires on it, they were basically still holding air, I need to get it out and fix it,
    I have a ralley roper I'm thinking about pulling the deck,. And finding a 8-10 hp engine to build a pull behind mower to either pull behind the cub, to mow 2x the width, or pull behind a 4wheeler! I have a 1.5 acres of over grown land, and having a basically small bush hog, or brush hog, something that will cut saplings,. And briars , maybe after a couple years of mowing, it will eventually Grow grass, I also need a decent size generator, a belt drive unit would be nice! Any idea where I may find one, 120/220 25-30amps?

    Hey Taryl, could you recommend a high frequency parts washer for my home shop? Oh yeah, I like the way you fixed the crapsman pulley, simple and effective and low cost! Keep the info coming!

    When I was in high school and college, I worked for a hardware store and we sold MTD made tractors. After ordering parts and doing service calls, I came to the realization that MTD must have run a special on springs and pulleys to run their equipment.

    How bout changing the belt to a V belt? Although that fix this is simple!!!!

    • @billsimpson604
      @billsimpson604 2 роки тому

      If a V belt would work, they would have used one at the factory to save a few dollars. The super belt is needed in that application.

    you could also put a 3/4" pipe in a machine vise in a hydraulic press. hold the pully with the groove on the pipe, then place another piece of pipe on top. press slowly and the pipes will spread the flanges apart on both sides (top & bottom) at the same time. release and rotate. this may spread the ully flanges more uniformly.

    You should consider a flat washers slightly larger diameter then the pully on top .just a piece of sheet metal drilled and cut round .

    OMG. I hate Craftsman. I have a LT1500 and this thing will disengage the mower while I'm driving it . I'll be mowing the grass and all of a sudden the blades quit churning. I will have to turn it off and back on while jiggling the engagement handle to get the mower to start going again. Then I'll mow for another 30 yards or so and it will disengage again and I have to wiggle the engagement handle to get it mowing again. Would that be some type of switch under the seat where the handle is that maybe has a short or is going bad?

    The pulley is missing a retainer stud.
    I've see ln where u need to bend the post towards the pulley to keep belt on.

    Can you just buy a belt the same length with a deeper V?

    • @billsimpson604
      @billsimpson604 2 роки тому

      If you did the belt would slip or snap after a few months. Look how thick that sucker is. You could tow a tank with that thing.

    How about making a video on how to fix the crappy drag link on a craftsman lawn tractor. Not by just buying a new one, it will not last, but how to fix one so the ball doesnt pop out of the socket. Ive seen various methods but would like to know the one you would use that would last the longest. Im tired of buying new ones.
