Watching this in 2020. I was 13 at the time and I remember been there watching the aftermath. The road layout is still the same to this day, not that it would of stop this accident happening.
They moan on about pedestrian crossings and the like, but what benefit would that be to a runaway HGV? Absolutely nothing! I remember this accident as I was 22 at the time.
Very sad day for all. It was my uncle Derek that was driving the truck who was working for an agency at the time. The trucks maintenance records were shocking as we later found out. RIP to all.
People interviewed say the mini roundabout was inadequate, but if the brakes failed on the truck or the driver had a medical episode at the wheel, roundabout, traffic lights, nothing would have stopped it.
I remember watching the rescue from about two mile away in our playground at sowerby new road primary school. The gap where the building's once was is now a memorial garden. Also this was the second disaster a tram wrecked at the same spot in October 1907killing meny people.
FODEN tipper not a easy truck to drive due to been non syncromesh gears and cable gear change that been under the tipping ram and inevitebly covered in dust made down changing difficult. However the truck had not just set off and blameing the truck operator was the easy way out as the driver was a ex police officer so he would'nt be to blame
@@GarethT902 That was the inevitable result of a police investigation when one of their own was driving no doubt. the driver had carried out a long journey prior to that point and brakes just dont wear out so why did'nt he stop before that point??. Fodens with cable gear change were always difficult to change when worn, full of dust and been non syncromesh, it was always my thought he could'nt change down.
30 years on, never forget this fateful day! R.I.P to all!

I was thinking the same, if thr brakes fail wether theres traffic lights, round about or crossing its not stopping

LifeOfAnEnglishman yes but at the time these people were interviewed they were not aware of the cause of the collision
That mini-roundabout is still there to this day, gotta be the maintenance of the lorry.
Exactly.
Fewstons the tipper owners had a seriously poor maintenance record.
The driver complained days before that his brakes were poor
Can't believe this was 25 years ago

Try the brakes were found to be worn out and maintenance non existent. The Driver was completely exonerated.
