Make PAINT stick to PLASTIC! (Flame Treatment) How to paint tricky plastics like PP, LDPE, HDPE...

  • This is the best solution I have found for making paint stick to difficult injection-molded plastics like POLYPROPYLENE, POLYETHYLENE, and more! Several parts can be flame treated quickly, and the results are more durable than things like scuffing the surface. (SUPPLIES LIST BELOW)

    My goodness, please help me glue slippery plastics. That would be greatly appreciated. I've been trying to figure out how to glue tarp material for a while. I think it's some form of polyethylene. People say PE needs to be welded to stick, but remelting it makes it brittle and useless in my experience.

    • @preciousplasticph
      @preciousplasticph 2 роки тому +12

      Overheating it if it get brittle. Mechanical fastener like wood screw work better. We work it like wood for our recycled plastic furniture

    • @preciousplasticph
      @preciousplasticph 2 роки тому +15

      If its pvc vinyl tarp, try pvc plumbing cement... some formulas work. Commercially we used a dedicated heat sealer for tarp. It was like a combination heat sealer/sewing machine.

    SHOW NOTES / THINGS I SHOULD'VE MENTIONED (AKA "CRAFSMAN'S REGRETS")
    ● "THERMOPLASTICS": This is how I referred to PP, LDPE, HDPE, etc., but this may sound confusing to anyone who associates "thermoplastics" only with hand-moldable low-temp products like "InstaMorph" pellets. Although these plastics do qualify as thermoplastics, I might should have referred to them as "INJECTION-MOLDED PLASTICS".
    ● PAINT TIME: You do not have to immediately paint the plastic after heat-treating it. Although I like to do it pretty soon after the heat + IPA wipe-down because it means less handling and potential exposure to oils or other paint inhibitors.

      It was incredibly valuable to me! As always CrafsMan, thank you so much for the content and making it fun to watch. I know you put your heart into it, and it shows. Sharing, trial and error, playing, learning. (But, ALWAYS a useful conclusion searching for the best ways, that most probably would never even have considered trying!) THIS IS AMAZING! I love to make custom action figures but getting the paint to stick permanently is always a problem. Sanding and multiple thin coats helps but there's always a rubbing problem at the joints. I'm going to have to try this! I actually liked that you showed all the things that DIDNT work. Because us folks who have this problem know the pain of 'just do this'. And you're like 'yep, tried that'. BTW, Crafson's sculptures were great!

    I'd sure love a video about gluing plastics!
    I just went through a long week of plastic glue / epoxy trials, testing out a bunch of different epoxies and glues made for plastic.
    I found the best technique for me was first scuffing the two pieces to be bonded with my dremel and 80 grit.
    Then i bond them with JB Weld's Plastic Bonder (black). I make sure to feather out the edges of the epoxy into the roughed of plastic really good rather than leave it as it lies.
    After my pieces cured I reinforced the area with a thick layer of regular JB Weld.
    The Plastic Bonder is amazingly strong, and the steel reinforced JB Weld adds even more strength and durability. Havent been able to forcibly removed the glued pieces from eachother yet!

    Crafsman you are the best … seems like I’m not alone in loving the depeche mode cover sneaking in there. You are even better than “stranger things” for bringing the 80’s nostalgia. I loved the 80’s and I love you and your channel.

    Crafsman you should stick with that gut feeling and do that glueing video. I personally would love to see a video on glueing plastics. That would be so helpful not just for crafting but also everyday repairs.

    All of your information is helpful, Mr. Crafsman. It keeps my craftin steady, and is my number one go-to for inspiration on most of the projects I see all the way through. The techniques I've learned from watching your videos are a joy to show others, and when they ask me how I know this stuff, I just pull up whatever video you did that is on the thing I'm doing. Your channel is not only one of my favorites, but my little 6 year old nephew's as well. Keep up the good work, sir- and have a great weekend.

    This channel is everything I’ve been searching for. Tips like this are life changing for me right now. I’ve been trying for years at this point to repair various toys and toy accessories for my son so many conventional products seem to fail utterly. I never knew some of these products and techniques existed!
    Toys these days are so poorly made and with a young child it’s frustrating to see a toy last a matter of days before it breaks, and not from being thrown or smashed or anything.
    Quick story- my son got several of the Jakk’s Pacific Sonic the Hedgehog toys for Christmas last year (2020) and in just two days 3 of them broke and by the week’s end the other 3 had also broken. Interestingly, they were all broken in similar parts of the toy- either a leg joint or other hinged spot. Again, this was done while playing with them rather gently for kids. How is it that toys from my childhood which we played with, stepped on, threw around the house, etc. manage to be in great functioning condition to this day? How did they survive all that use and the ones I buy now are lucky to survive past two weeks? Naturally I was furious with the company. I wrote them an e-mail (minding my tone) explaining how repeatedly their toys kept breaking in the same places, pictures included. Of course I never received a response.
    I really am fed up with the lack of integrity from some of these toy manufacturers. However this video makes me feel that at least I can salvage some of these toys for my son’s sake.

    I'm assuming a heat gun would work as well to treat these? This changes the game for these tricky plastics

    • @wrongtown

      Yeah I was wondering the same thing. I imagine that (to paraphrase CraftsDad) "It's a trade-off". The torch is likely a more efficient method but you're at greater risk of scorching the plastic, whereas the heat gun will take longer?
      Possibly heat gun won't actually reach the required temperatures, though that seems unlikely? The cool end of a torch is still plenty hot!
