I understand where the punishment mindset comes from. And its probably worse for those with ADHD or people with excessive spending habits. I like to think that I am actually HELPING myself, because even though the initial high from buying something is nice, it fades off soon and I end up losing money and having more physical and mental clutter. Hence, I try to avoid impulse spending. I hope this mindset helps you through the rest of your year. ❤ Feel free to share it on a vlog because, judging from the comments, I think a lot of people had the punishment mindset, and I don't think many will see this comment! ❤

I could definitely use a dopamine ideas video! I am attempting a no buy month but have not been doing well with it. I ended up having a rather stressful month and I think that I didn’t have the capacity to deal with that and add a no buy. I definitely bought way less and mostly spent some gift cards on things that I actually needed…but..yea. I am still trying and maybe I will see if I can do a no buy March. February in wisps sort of a bad month to deal with on a good day!

I was watching other videos about no buy/low buy and one of the tips is to start doing it only for a month and understand why we buy like we do. Otherwise, after the no buy we could fall into the old habits. That being said do you enjoy any kind of hobbies?

For me I failed my nobuys because like Grace said, I was doing it as punishment. Then I’d spend even more right after. I watched a ton of declutter/minimalist videos to help me realize I’m not buying because I just don’t need more stuff!!

I love that you addressed this "I don't deserve" mindset that can be attached to no buy. I am approaching it as a rewarding myself with less overhead. Less to have to clean, to put away, to overall manage. After having to clean out my moms house when she passed and my grandmother's house when she moved-then her apartment when she passed, the stuff can just be so overwhelming. I had some initial withdrawal from shopping, but I am finding I less stress about managing the mess of stuff (I still have so much stuff, but I am not actively adding to it). I am also saving for a trip so being able to travel will be my reward.

I've been slowly changing my thought process from depriving myself to intentionally using what I have. I'm noticing that the feeling of realizing I used everything up and not wasting a thing is the same dopamine as purchasing something- at least for me. Purchases are starting to have more meaning now and I couldn't be happier for trying this challenge.
On another note: some of my favorite homesteading/slow life channels on UA-cam are country life vlog, dianxi xiaoge, liziqi, simple living alaska ♡

Owning a homestead and being able to do most of the building, carpentry and fixing yourselves, is litteral gold. I am 37 yo and lives alone on the swedish countryside in a little cottage and is growing my own food. The amount of money you save by doing things yourself (when done well, if you don’t is just gonna cost you down the line😅) is crazy. Your homestead plans sounds like a dream worth working hard towards. NZ is the most beautiful country!

I've found that I almost always just want to do something fun when I get the urge to buy something. My partner and I tried archery this weekend and it cured my urges to buy anything that had been cropping up that week, and it only cost 25 bucks for the two of us.

Hi Grace i just wanted to say thanks for doing theae videos/project. I'm not at the stage of being able to do a No buy yet but you have inspired me to do my own low-buy challenge, and while i would say my follow-through has been... Patchy... I'm definitely spending far less than I normally would have. Every time I lapse I watch one of your videos and get back on the horse to try again and your low-key persistence and these video check ins are really hekpful and inspiring. I set up my guidelines at the beginning of the year. Then this month I was offered a new job at a new company. Not something I was planning for. Which due to a different dress code I actually had to buy a new work wardrobe. Thanks to your videos I wasn't stressing about it. Instead I did some research into what my work uniform should be so that I was still comfortable. Then I went through my closet and pulled any piece that would work and made a small list of items I still needed. I ended up getting 5 new blouses and 1 dress that will work for all 4 seasons using other pieces I own. Before I would have felt the need to buy everything brand new and end up wasting hundreds of dollars. I just kept focusing on my why while I was shopping and it really helped. Plus I saw something else I really liked and I wasn't going to buy it but I went shopping with my Mom and she got it for me as a gift for getting a new job. (It was a pair of lounge shorts. lol)

I'm so jealous that you have the possibility in the future to live out your dream ♥️ I have almost the exact same dream and even though I've never been to nz, as a Finn I already know I would absolutely love it there. Taking care of any sized farm or homestead is not for one person though and since I have no one in my life to do it with me it can just be a dream. However I truly hope you continue your youtube journey until then and beyond bc I would absolutely love watching your life there and how you get by and settled etc. All the love and luck 🫶

Loved hearing more about your job, a day or a week in the life and a swing would be so cool too see too. So glad I found your channel randomly, because the no buy/low buy year is helping me so much so far. I definitely medicate with shopping and buying things that I think will fix my life. But now I get a dopamine hit when I update my budget spreadsheet (so geeky i know, but I kinda love it) and get to put money towards paying off my debts. And if I stick to my plan, I will be debt free by October and then will be able to save for my future too. 💜

On the scarcity mind set...I think if we shift from thinking "we can't have this or do that or buy something we think we must have..." to thinking "I'm in a good head space and am so happy I "get" to work on spending my money wisely and saving for things that I really want and that are more important than buying stuff for instant gratification" that we might think less about scarcity. Your New Zealand plan sounds so amazing. Go you!!

we'd love a live chat with you!! I'd love to hear about your plan for your farm once you get to your homestead. I'm an ~amateur~ gardener planning for my second vegetable garden this spring and I LOVE the idea of growing most of my own food. It's been a major learning curve for me in terms of setup & layout, when/where to plant specific plants, how much sun & water etc etc. It's an exciting challenge though and I'm curious how you're preparing yourself for that part of your new journey!

We'd love to have you in NZ!! It's so beautiful here, although our public image as a 'clean green country' is really misleading! We have one of the highest GHG emissions per capita in the world, and highest consumption rates per capita in the world, and we make most of our national income off of dairy farming which has polluted a lot of our rivers (to the point they are unswimmable) and soil (which means people living near dairy farms have much higher rates of cancer). Indigenous Māori here had their land stolen from them to build dairy farms and are now discriminated against on their own land. I still feel it's one of the best places to live in the world at the moment, but we have such a ways to go in terms of making sure our environment and people are truly cared for.

The way I’m getting my no spend to work is when I see something I won’t. I go and take that money and put it directly on the credit card. I am trying to pay off that way I feel I spent money on something I needed to spend it on. And now as of today, I have paid off my credit card and put it away. Do you have no spend for a year. Put that money you want to spend on a bill credit card loan whatever you need to be paying off instead of buying something you’re buying something you’re way out of debt.

then it's not on you anymore if you declutter or re-gift the item!!! you set your boundary and communicated your needs, and they still decided to spend their money! consumerism has translated into "money = time, love, care, etc" when it's really the thought that counts. hopefully the people in your life will understand sooner rather than later! at the end of the day, it's their money and their "problem" if they don't listen to you.

    My recent low buy story.
I've known I'm going to be a bridesmaid in June ( yay!) and that I would need shoes for that, I had no others and i hate shoe shopping. So there's particularly shoes where on my yellow list ( but no others ) I could by one pair of white sandals that I was able to re wear all summer, sorted.
And there was this pair that were £150 (!) But they convert to flat, they would solve the problem, i could stop shopping for shoes, blah blah blah and anyway I put my phone down and 2 days later I found a normal pair of sandals for £18!🎉 ( they don't convert but they are low enough you know) It reminded me of the $27 story - sometimes you've just got to sit on something that little bit longer. And I was reminded of how annoying and long shopping is, not the buying but the decision and thinking 😅 I spent about a week thinking about these shoes! Madness 😂
Also I would love a live chit- chat ❤
