Funny story but this was a peice done when he was trying to get the job of making the music to Mass Effect. At the last minute they decided to use it as the galaxy map music. Very beautiful peice.
Yes! Sam has told that story in interviews too. Now it's basically THE mass effect track. It's awesome. Cool to hear from a relative man.:) Thanks for the comment! I think Sam was busy with a solo album if I'm not mistaken, gotta check that out.
Your Cousin, Sir. Has taken me to places no composer ever has! This song is in perfect symbioses with my visions of future/sci-fi I've had since i can remember. Legend.
Cyrus James-Khan Ya he was gifted at a young age, but had no knowledge of musical craft, he would dabble with keyboards when I came to visit him. Eventually he took courses and perfected it. I heard alot of stuff that had potential. Nowadays though I don't know what he's up to, we had a bit of a falling out over family drama sadly and we haven't spoken in years.
Silrian777 Ya, I was mad when they didn't pick it at first. Then one day at the last minute he told me and I was like, jaw drop excited haha. It was a bit weird hearing that peice in the game since it wasn't as refined as the finishing peices, he managed to touch it up and actually make it sound better than the original submission peice. Testament to his talent indeed.
it feels so nostalgic to me, I come to listen to it from time to time and I always end up with watery eyes. I have so many good many memories tied with this game for some reason.
A lot of people don't know it, but when making a game, the small details are crucial, such as this great song. This song is one of THE most important small details of the Mass Effect Trilogy. It has been droning itself into the back of our minds since the beginning, every take to the galaxy map, it tells us to adventure, explore, and inspire. It shows to observe the colours, see the sites, and live the story. If it wasn't for this song, I believe that Mass Effect would be a far less great adventure than it is today. I consider Mass Effect a work of art, and if any game developer wishes to create something as wonderful as Mass Effect, they should never forget the bits that count, the bits that we can't see, but at the back of our minds, know are there.

You have no idea how much I wish this! I've had a pretty amazing life with amazing memories and experiences. It's a high I'll always be chasing from other video games but never get I'm sure. And that's fine because there are other amazing video games that have blown my mind. But! Jumeaux Elaine It's amazing coming back to this music after several years, as well. As if I'd been asleep that whole time and had woken up again. An entire other life lived out among the stars came rushing back into my mind.
Jumeaux Elaine I had the same thing happen to me. When I opened the map and heard this piece I knew this was it. Nice to know others have love for this track
The same thing happened to me. I remember that the game was never interesting to me at all. I started the first game because I got it as a present and it was laying there for 6 years. I tried to play it. But it just wasn't for me. I never got past the talking or the first mission. Not because of the difficulty but because of being bored. One day I told myself 'fk you have to do it atleast once'. I managed to get to the map and just sat there, unable to talk or to do anything almost tearing up. I can't even describe the feeling that I had listening to this song. It made me play the game and instantly buying the other two.

Dude, I love it to just read the descriptions of the planets and listening to this music for many minutes, you know a game is good when you don't even need to actually play to enjoy a lot.
I know exactly what you mean. From the same era, I played Final Fantasy XIII, which also featured in-game text, but, unlike with Mass Effect, I had zero interest in reading those.
Never been a fan of star trek or star wars but my god mass effect is brilliant! The music, politics, the different races, omega relays, biotics and super interesting events like the genophage!
fragr33f I agree. I love space and the thought of finding life on other planets sounds amazing to me but I've never been a huge fan of sci-fi media but this series is something special.
It's a shame Star Trek isn't more like Mass Effect. I've been a serious trekkie for 30 years, most of my life, but when I started playing Mass Effect, I was blown away! They REALLY need to do a television series or show on Netflix for Mass Effect! Not just a movie, but a Series that starts out with Shepard as an Alliance Trainee, finishing up with the events of ME3. The whole dynamics of the game Series are far better than any Star Trek game ever!
Everything comes down to applied phlebotinum and other tropes like that. Best I can agree on, that's subjective. But plausible? Only if you don't think about it too much and ignore all the obvious retroactive explanations like universal translators. The one thing that makes ME stand out from other scifi is the incredibly strong character building. And that isn't really reliant on the world's plausibility.
@@rippspeckthat’s a thing that almost every sci fi does. Trying to justify why everyone can understand eachother just gets in the way of the narrative unless you’re going for a 40k “no one understands eachother, much less gets along” kinda world.
Most of my pleasing feelings for Mass Effect trilogy stems from its deficiency in the presentation of the physical world around you. The game gives the player some room to imagine what is in the universe of Mass Effect. It is almost like reading a novel that you desperately fill the blanks about the people, the cities, and the structure of the fiction in your mind. Since the environment is not fully given to the player due to, I believe, some technical inabilities, it gives the player a huge role to take part in the composition of the game. Thereby, the factitive nature of me bringing a character to life reaches beyond the conventional interactiveness of video games. For the open-world level of the game is really restricted, you catch yourself imagining the back streets of Omega and thinking what people are doing while looking through the Citadel center toward the city beneath you. And this is how the bond between you and the game is structured, I guess.
Completely agree, the game sells its world so well that you just get completely immersed even though you only see a fraction of the galaxy. I always find myself fascinated by the very idea of a galactic community, especially the Citadel where all of the different Alien races interact, my brain just runs wild tbh. Maybe something similar will happen one day in real life, if Alien races share a similar rationality as us humans.
I’ll fly a starship Across the universe’ divide And when I reach the other side I’ll find a place to rest my spirit if I can Perhaps I may become a highwayman again Or I may simply be a single drop of rain But I will remain And I'll be back again....
Personally i think this music is a huge part of what makes Mass Effect franchise amazing. Instantly fell in love the first time I heard it. It brings back lots of memories and life
I first played Mass Effect for the first time in 2017, 10 years after its release. The introduction had already hooked me, walking around the Citadel, meeting the vast array of species and reading up on the codex. But nothing truly wowed me until I got the Normandy. The first moment when I entered the system, reading about exo-planets. I zoomed out to see now I was in a vast nebula, eagerly consuming the name of other systems. And then I found out there was one more layer-and zoomed out to see the entire Milky Way laid out in front of me as this track rose again. Very rarely have moments in books, films, or games been truly jaw dropping. This was one of those moments.
@@Silrian777 I myself just did it! Bought all three Mass Effect games at once for my Xbox 360 and started playing them around a week ago. Already finished ME1, and already progressing on ME2, and I'm really loving it! It doesn't even feel like it's a game, it's more of a very deep, interactive story!
@@Silrian777 know nobody cares but I picked it up a month ago and now finished the whole trilogy. But I feel so empty now..So hyped about the new mass effect...
'' Mass Effect is a bright universe with a dark secret, a spectacular new vision of the future. You're commander Shepard the tip of the spear of Humanity, on a galactic stage. Your actions, whether generous or ruthless will determine the fate of an entire universe. You have a starship called the Normandy and will command its crew as you adventure through the galaxy. You will travel the fastness of space and explore uncharted worlds, unraveling mysteries on a galactic scale. '' Sorry i watched the Mass Effect demo from 2006 to many times ;)
Soon I will be leaving Romania for an year or two for Holland where I will have an job.I need to continue my studies and unfortunately my family finacial resources aren't so good.Today I was listening to this song as I was learning something for the job I will have there, which is my first job also.My father came into the room and told me that he buyed my airplane ticket for 3 august. In just a few days I will be leaving home for the first time so away and so long, and listening to this getting to know I got my ticket, knowing that there is no way back filled me with a lot of emotions and nostalgia.I won't see my friends or parents for a while, but I am ready for some sacrifices and for my first lifetime journey yet.
The sound of my mid teens and early 20s. Mass Effect will forever hold a special place in my heart. Completely revolutionised my taste and expectations of sci-fi.
Silrian777 i remember laying in bed in sheperds room on the normandy just staring at the stars outside the window listening to this music for hours. what an experience ! you really feel like a lone warrior out in space trying to save the galaxy
Wow, I see this very simple fan edit of this theme took off pretty well. Cool guys! Glad you enjoy it. Mass Effect remains the modern king of sci-fi! And it's due in great part to Sam Hulick and Jack Wall!
Replaying the trilogy one last time before i get my ps4. Mass effect is in that special place in my heart, mind and feelings. it will remain forever there.
Spent many hours listening to this tune while probing the planets, and reading information about them. One of the best things about this series for me.
Anyone else find that this song helps to calm down anxiety? I feel its because of the pulse-like sonar noise. Gets the breathing back into rhythm. So relaxing.
If I'm alive when Humanity ascends to the stars, I'm going to grab a ship, put it into a nice stable orbit around some magnificent planet or star, get comfortable, and loop this song for hours and hours.
Im not even 20 yet but I think I'll be in the ground by the time that ships are that affordable and easy to access. The first spaceships to be able to be used by just anyone will probably be a fortune. We've got a long hill to climb if we want ships to be that easy to get
@@villiannewyork This, aye. Though perhaps in our lifetime, We might be able to fly between the moon and earth atleast. Or atleast be able to get to orbit as a short experience rather than a stay. We might also be able to see astronauts going to mars live on news. Who knows?
@@villiannewyorkif you get rich, maybe. I don’t see mars landings before 2040, or a permanent lunar colony before 2100. You might be able to do an orbit of earth if you have the money though. The average man is hundreds of years from space travel.
Gotta love listening to this in the dead of night when the sky is completely clear and the stars are really visible. my imagination runs freely and I look around spotting constellations in awe at how far away each star system is and how massive each star could possibly be. Also, who knows what might be orbiting or even living in those systems. guess we'll have to find out one day.
Same :) This Seried is a wonderful Example that shows what Computers and Art can truly form when the right People do it.....I'm really fascinated by the Universe and love watching the Stars, the Universe and thinking about everything whilee listening to this....
DrOwn19 Don't think anyone ever did that, unless that was your personal routine, i personally prefer my best friends' brother's bed but hey that's just me.
I always loved this theme throughout the trilogy. It's the comforting theme you come back to between missions and battles. Until the very end. I'll never forget when I finished Cronos station and went back to the galaxy map and saw that EVERY point is controlled by the Reapers and theres no choice left but to go to Earth and end it all. I spent a long time on the ship talking to everyone before admitting that this is the end of this saga I had started, the actual point of no return. No side quests, no more fun banter, just one last stand to try and save the galaxy....
Copied this into my mp3 player (I still kept one!), going into local water therapy center, get a private room (expensive but I want to try it) and play this song with low volume while floating in the water, motionless. It's a bliss. Soooo relaxing. And to whoever made this great melody, I give you my salute!
Man, I got Mass Effect 2 bundled in for free with my Xbox 360 that I got for Christmas 2010. I had no idea what was going on in the story, but I remember being so drawn in by the characters, the galaxy that they had created, and the incredible soundtrack. One of my fondest memories will always be sitting cross-legged on my bed, the entire room pitch black except for the light from the TV screen, listening to the galaxy map thing and just staring at the Omega 4 Relay. Who needs to be an astronaut? This trilogy was more than enough to bring me a sense of wonder and adventure.
I Remember when I was 12 years old and played Mass Effect for the first time. I always been fascinated by space, uncharted worlds, nebulas and the universe in general. I was also new to this type of games (action gdr). So this game was like a miracle to me because I had never seen a game which allowed me to take conversations with aliens or showed me how humans could interact in a distant future with other species. The dialogue wheel, paragon/renegate system, the amazing soundtrack and sci-fi vibe. Then I opened for the first time the Galaxy Map and from that moment I could also explore Milky Way (with it's limits, but I was a kid), see star systems, read planets descriptions, land on the Moon, decide where to go. Oh and this amazing soundtrack made that moment so magical! I was so excited and happy! I also remember the mission on Therum and that weird song that freaked me out. This trilogy will remain always in my heart and I replay it periodically. Thanks BioWare for all this emotions.
Yeah, the ME trilogy really was an incredible journey. But I loved how the CItadel DLC closed it for me. Last thing I played, and it was a brilliant goodbye to the series.
***** Hey man memories hurt The experience of playing mass effect for the first time can never be relived, the music brings back those feelings, but in a distant longing way
***** It's not just the music played on the map, it's a theme that reminds me a lot of good things from waaaay back when i played this masterpiece trilogy, It's a "general memory" from all the emotions i felt when played it..... If you didn't like the game or you just didn't care at all it's ok... but you dont have to be a dick about it
***** Think taking a journey to a foreign country, becoming very attached to custom things there, like how the busride sounds, how music sounds in the evening. Stuff you encounter every day while your busy in that 'life'. That is the Galaxy Map to mass effect fans. It's the quintessential music that came back every 10 mins or so, for every day or so, for three games long. Some people get emotional hearing it again, that's called association.
SpookyKid94 I remember playing the first one for the first time back in '09 and choosing to go to Feros first. I stopped before pushing 'Travel' and just let this play. I know exactly how you feel, man.
I remember the first time I started this game up. I had been over to my friend's house and his brother had bought ME1 and said he didn't really like it. Having loved KOTOR and seeing BioWare on the box and asked my friend's brother if I could borrow the game. I fell in love. The moment I started the game and heard the music and sound effects just on the menu. I had one week to beat the game before the agreed upon time I'd give it back to my friend's brother. I beat it 3 times in that week.
Mass Effect is the true essence and masterclass of Sci-Fi. It is an experience unlike any other and just listening to this song has reminded me after all these years. Can't wait for the remaster
I hope you are reading this 2 years on! Your comment took me aback, it's nice to see kindness on the Internet for a change. I hope you are well my friend.
this is one of my ALL time favorite pieces...I watched my son play this, and I waited for him to search the galaxy so I could hear this piece. hahahaha Thanks for posting on UA-cam
Mass Effect...
The first time you open the galaxy map on your first playthrough of Mass Effect 1, there aren't many moments like that in gaming. They managed to turn a map interface into one of the core memories of the game, and I really can't name other games that do that. This music is how they did that
Every year I go to this uncharted beach on vacation, it’s a quaint place with a camping site nearby, no hotels or anything of the sort. One night I took a walk out near the shoreline and I could see the Milky Way due to the lack of light pollution. Decided to put this exact mix on repeat and sat there on the shoreline gazing at it for hours, the sky reflecting on the darkness of the sea and the comforting sound of crashing waves. One of my fondest memories… Here’s to hoping the new Mass Effect lives up to the hype!
Ive been trying to figure out where this music came from for a while now. When i was growing up my Dad played Mass Effect. One of his favorite game series, if not his favorite. I heard it about a year ago and got really nostalgic and couldn't figure out why. Now i know!
The extention reminds me of the cycles that the reapers mentioned. The beginning is joyful, different species start to explore the universe, then the middle which is a bit more somber, the species establish themselves on the citadel and expand, and in the end, the song becomes sad, the reapers arrive and wipe everything out, and start the beginnings of yet another cycle...
Ftr, I just used 3 original tracks and blended them into one long track. So Idk if I should get credit for the ‘rendition’, I just compiled existing material. That said, thanks!
Silrian777 well I saw 'extended' and was expecting the usual horribly spliced, out of sync, sections of the same track I see all the time on yt, I was pleasently surprised to see not only good blending but a mix of other variants to the galaxy map song I'd never even hear do before! Nice work!
le Pingo Pete Thanks! Yeah I also get annoyed by that. It’s why I eventuelly decided to make a few things (for) myself. The only three tracks in it are the galaxy map songs from the OST’s from 1 and 2, and I sped up a slower ode to the galaxy map theme Hulick did for the ME3 Citadel DLC (the end part).
I remember the steady process of falling in love with Mass Effect. An unremarkable opening, then the sense of mystery and adventure of opening this galaxy map for the first time, the character recruitment and bond building, then that catapult feeling of Virmire, going from a Star-hopping manhunt to a galaxy-wide crisis. Unbelievable experience.
Returning to the memories of the Mass Effect Trilogy is like visiting the grave of an old friend. At first you get sad because he will never come back and then you get angry because they could easily safe him but refused any real attempt.
If you let UA-cam run in radom mode... you take a dump and here playing this song after over 10 years not hearing it... and you still remember its from the Map Screen on Mass Effect 1... You did a very good job as Sound Engineer... repeating this song now since 5 days nonstop..
Good Times! The Mass Effect Univserse is the most awsome one! I think no star wars or star trek can ever come to this. So much Good Times whit this game! God bless all of you Mass Effect Lovers like me!!!
This piece.. makes me think about all the great memories of this game. I love space, the mysteries and all that and this song in the galaxy map was so special to me...
I should go.
Shepard!
Commander Shepard Shepherd!
No Shepard please don’t go
Yes, there is some right here. I too want return of Shepard but if it isn't possible I want return of Milky Way. This is the true ME, not Andromeda. Geths, Reapers, Cerberus (good after all), Salarians, Turians, Asari, Krogan and all of them. If ME 4 (true 4) will not be in Milky Way I will not buy it.

Yeah, totally agree. It's one of my favorite games of all time because it's not only a game. It's a deep voyage into something unique...
I hope it is our future.... (without the reapers, obvi) :) :) :)
This is a classic. It will be in my head until the day I die, and is the purest definition of sci-fi.
is it still in your head ? :D

I know exactly what you mean. From the same era, I played Final Fantasy XIII, which also featured in-game text, but, unlike with Mass Effect, I had zero interest in reading those.
“Really, commander ?”
“Probing Uranus.”
since when Zombies know how to probe ?
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Never been a fan of star trek or star wars but my god mass effect is brilliant! The music, politics, the different races, omega relays, biotics and super interesting events like the genophage!
fragr33f I agree. I love space and the thought of finding life on other planets sounds amazing to me but I've never been a huge fan of sci-fi media but this series is something special.
+fragr33f Have a friend who hates sci-fi, only at most likes some fantasy, managed to get him to play this: he loved it.XD
Never got into Star wars or trek and Mass Effect is my favorite game series. 1 2 and 3 anyways. Finished each game multiple times and still want more
Mass Effect is definitely more Star Trek based and I love it. Even the aliens are similar!
Mass Effect simply has one of the best Sci Fi universes and most plausible ones.
Human’s getting involved in a war with the first aliens we meet is the most human thing ever
Newcomers learn the hard way, exploration is no walk in the park
Everything comes down to applied phlebotinum and other tropes like that.
Best I can agree on, that's subjective. But plausible? Only if you don't think about it too much and ignore all the obvious retroactive explanations like universal translators.
The one thing that makes ME stand out from other scifi is the incredibly strong character building. And that isn't really reliant on the world's plausibility.
I wasn't a fan of sci fi but mass effect world hooked me in. Very well done setting
@@rippspeckthat’s a thing that almost every sci fi does. Trying to justify why everyone can understand eachother just gets in the way of the narrative unless you’re going for a 40k “no one understands eachother, much less gets along” kinda world.
When we join intergalactic society this should be the Milky Way galactic anthem.
LeTtRrZ I agree
I pledge allegiance to the intergalactic federation

Id love to agree but it can't be. That has to go to "America, F*** Yeah!"

U know somethings great when its over and your satisfied but u still want more
The Mass Effect Trilogy remains the best game series of all time for me, 10 years after it ended. I still love to replay it every year
да
Yup, I replay every year as well during November. N7 Day 😎
It never occurred to me that the Galaxy Map theme never changed. It's just so natural.

Amazing! Always a joy to see people pick up Mass Effect even after all this time.

'' Mass Effect is a bright universe with a dark secret, a spectacular new vision of the future. You're commander Shepard the tip of the spear of Humanity, on a galactic stage.

You will travel the fastness of space and explore uncharted worlds, unraveling mysteries on a galactic scale. ''

The sound of my mid teens and early 20s. Mass Effect will forever hold a special place in my heart.
Completely revolutionised my taste and expectations of sci-fi.
As long as we aren't talking about the Ocean Gate....
Did the developers learn a science class before making this game. They even make planet outside of milky way. It's incredible!
@@HuyGaming96 I reckon they did serious research. It's such an intelligent series

I only finished playing the trilogy last month after starting in early 2022 and it hasnt left my mind. Unforgettable experience
I appreciate that they kept this throughout the trilogy
100%. Was like hearing an old friend. Even after all this time, when I do play throughs I love opening the galaxy map just to hear this.
Anyone else find that this song helps to calm down anxiety? I feel its because of the pulse-like sonar noise. Gets the breathing back into rhythm. So relaxing.
Yep. It really does give me the feeling of exploring in my space ship.
It makes me dream...
I truly recommend exploring in Elite:Dangerous then. What a galaxy, such width... And of course, put this on :)

This theme takes me back to so many good memories .. it kinda makes me want to cry
Yeah, the ME trilogy really was an incredible journey. But I loved how the CItadel DLC closed it for me. Last thing I played, and it was a brilliant goodbye to the series.
***** Hey man memories hurt
The experience of playing mass effect for the first time can never be relived, the music brings back those feelings, but in a distant longing way
***** It's not just the music played on the map, it's a theme that reminds me a lot of good things from waaaay back when i played this masterpiece trilogy, It's a "general memory" from all the emotions i felt when played it.....
Wow I never realised how important this music was. The depth and sense of scale it lent to the map were subtle and yet moving.
This track perfectly encapsulates the feeling of having the whole galaxy at your fingertips...

The first time you open the galaxy map on your first playthrough of Mass Effect 1, there aren't many moments like that in gaming. They managed to turn a map interface into one of the core memories of the game, and I really can't name other games that do that. This music is how they did that
I never in my life have I heard such beautiful music quiet !!!! It is the anthem of deep space !!!
A sense of wonder, exploration, hints of uneasiness and urgency at the end.. beautiful.
One of my fondest memories…
Here’s to hoping the new Mass Effect lives up to the hype!
Amazing. Brings back the memories and exploration feelings
The beginning is joyful, different species start to explore the universe, then the middle which is a bit more somber, the species establish themselves on the citadel and expand, and in the end, the song becomes sad, the reapers arrive and wipe everything out, and start the beginnings of yet another cycle...
they use that part in the synthesis ending pretty sure.
Mass effect will forever be in my heart
this is a great rendition, really did a good job capturing the essence of the map view, and exploration in this
Ftr, I just used 3 original tracks and blended them into one long track.

An unremarkable opening, then the sense of mystery and adventure of opening this galaxy map for the first time, the character recruitment and bond building, then that catapult feeling of Virmire, going from a Star-hopping manhunt to a galaxy-wide crisis. Unbelievable experience.
The music in Mass Effect 1 is truly special.
AHHHH yes I cannot wait to hear this again in the legendary edition!
