You are right in pointing out that such behaviours are not just caused by troubled childhood. There probably would be more complex reasons that elicit such horrific behaviour. The thing that we need to understand is that morality is not exclusive to homosapiens. Every social mammals has their own set of moral codes that are better suited to their survival. The surprising thing is much of such moral codes overlap in every social mammals. Thus giving morality an evolutionary foundation.
