  • Short video of a small collection of valved radio tuner's I've had hiding in my loft for a while. In the next few months I hope to get a few of them restored. FM is still very popular despite Digital Radio being available. Valves were still a popular choice for FM tuners as valves were much cheaper than VHF transistors that had only just started to be able to work on VHF frequency's.

The Quad tuner in later days had available a bolt on multiplex decoder. It was made using germanium discrete transistors. Cost about 16 UK pounds if I remember. A matching AM tuner was also available with both wide and narrow IF. Kinda gave a sort of HiFi sound with local stations. Both tuners were very good in both sound and selectivity.
I remember you could listen to police broadcasts but because they used AM not FM you had to off tune the frequency to hear it cleanly. Ironically the better the tuner the poorer was it's ability to receive the police because of better AM rejection.

AHH yes Michael I guess by then transistors taking over. I've always wanted a valve multiplex unit. I did remember right it was the police PMR.

Don't worry Daz, you're not the first to call it a "trow line"! The Leak tuners were superb in their day, although I may be biased having a soft spot for Leak stuff anyway. Look forward to seeing all these working again. Cheers.

Hi, another great video! The little unknown tuner is actually another Jason, it was originally the switched version of the first one but someone has converted it to variable tuning! There should be a three-position switch where the tuning cap is. You would tune the slug to radio 3 then switch in either of two trimming coils for R2 and R4, which is why radios 2, 3, and 4 are 2.2 Mc/s apart.

Thanks for the info, I thought it was a oddball thing. I wonder why the other adjustment behind. perhaps course tuning.

There were a few smaller kit manufacture around apart from big ones like heathkit. Jason of course and Martin electronics. Maybe somebody else knows of more. I only know theses as I have a few old PW magazines.

All the units are indeed mono, Steve. A stereo multiplex decoder is needed for stereo. In the UK this came much later as we followed the US in using the same system in the late 60's I believe. Usually these units were solid state. I have seen a unit for the quad, but not the leak. The multiplex socket on the rear is for the stereo decoder. I hope to work on the leak in the future. Thanks for watching and find the channel interesting. Daz.
