- The smashing story of recycling Glass shows the journey that takes place for glass bottles and jars from your recycling boxes or bring banks to the reprocessor and then ultimately back into new products.
I was really hoping for a 90s video, just because that's always the type you get with this kind of thing.
I just love the poeple that are making sense of this recycling businesses awsom thumbs up for them just love watching those videos
david lefort , Me too.
The thing about recycling glass to make new glass saves a little energy, but nothing like as much as re-using the bottle that you have already made. Re-use is so much better than recycle.
Paul is correct. Re-use... even once before recycling contributes to the energy/carbon footprint savings in a tremendous way.
@@packagingscientist9530Hi, your from?
Yes. Reduce and reuse your plastic and glass bottles as well as plastic grocery bags. Grocery bags make great packaging material to protect the product inside the box. I can easily put hundreds of bags in a small box to protect fragile goods.
Yes but in a lot of cases glass needs to be recycled.
@@arransalmon5878 Of course, better recycled than not.
Great video, thanks for sharing. It always makes me happy to see materials get recycled, especially things like glass that are not biodegradable. God Bless you all.
So, so, so much better than plastic.
I agree
Unfortunately its all about shipping cost. plastic is lighter so it will never be used for every day needs like milk and water again.
@@jhkk1269 this is true. Glass production actually creates a lot of waste unfortunately
I wish that the United States was as advanced in glass recycling as the UK. While paper and cardboard recycling saves trees, glass never decomposes and can be recycled infinite times.
@Frank Swoboda I agree that it's difficult, but it never decomposes. I've been looking into it, and what Oregon does is crush glass into fine sand and use it to build roads and for drainage material in land fills (the exact same thing they would use sand for). I think that's probably the best option, because it is still recycled, and it does not cost a lot of money (they would have to collect glass for trash too).
@Frank Swoboda how so?
@Frank Swoboda We might have unlimited sand, but we certainly don't have unlimited landfill space, and in my hometown they destroyed a wetland to expand our landfill. Also, there are ways to deal with the problem such as having local glass crushers and using the crushed glass on whatever sand would be needed for locally (e.g. building roads), instead of trucking it hundreds of miles. Nothing should go into the landfill unless it is absolutely necessary.
Great video. Very interesting.
I was told to reserch about this ,and who new a two minute video has so much info!(:
why add sand and carbonate? Isn't it already glass? Do the labels disappear cleanly in the furnace?
Great video.
My local recycling centre always gets so much glass bottles and jars from the recycling wheelie bins that they'll take some if there's storage, the rest all dumped.
If places or recycling centres are getting too much glass coming in then there should be a separate place for trucks to dump all of the cities glass bottles and jars where there's plenty of storage for it, and to break and sort through it.

I love the recycling process
Was not expecting the loud jump scare at the start
do they have to separate the colours manually? I can't imagine how a machine could do that
usually there is separate bins for different colour glass....but if a few rouge brown bottles made there way into the clear glass bin im not sure how they could separate them.
It is still sorted by hand. Mainly before it's turned to cullet
That should not actually be too difficult at least on a small scale. Blood cells are separated by colour in a device called a Coulter counter, a similar machine is used for detecting bad peanuts and other similar foods.
Particles pass a detector in a line, the detector "sees" a colour and the particle with the "wrong" colour is pushed aside by a puff of air or some other mechanical system.

+yellowfolder With a camera? Not that difficult sounding to me. It is indeed silly how they do not address any of the actual interesting details about the industrial process, though, in a video about glass recycling.
Yes a optical sorter separates the different colours...
Amazing video thanks
Thanks lady
Good job making it in the UK
GLOSS
Mik used to be in glass bottles and used over and over (some still is I know),but in the super market
it's plastic. As children we used to take glass bottles back and get the deposit back,it's good it's
recycled but why not reuse it ?
So basically sand, soda ash, limestone and broken recycled glass melted down till they are the consistency of honey
Wait what about glass plates and cups can those be recycled
This is a great video
I would like to start a small glass bottle manufacturing company, how can i start?
How strong is glass as a construction material?
For example, if it's made into round marble form, or into solid cubes.
Glass if strong, but very brittle. on paper it could be reinforces with rebar, but could not be poured on site like concrete.
Glass also has very poor insulation properties.
Has a high compressive strength but low tensile strength
Good idea to recycle glass, but it is so energy intensive to make and energy intensive to recycle, as well as energy intensive to transport because of its weight, It should not be used at all if there are better alternatives.
That's why everything went to plastic. Easier to recycle and less energy to make into new products.
When compared to alternatives like aluminum, it's cheaper when comparing the lack of mining necessary. Plastics can be recycled (some not all) but only a limited amount of times before they will break down. Glass is non-reactive, will never breakdown (into other harmful materials) can be recycle indefinitely, has a never ending supply, and if reverted back to an exchange system is sustainable since it will not need to be reprocessed.
Yeha mate
You can turn used glass back into virgin sand by using a 100% renewable zero carbon process with very little infrastructure investment - just throw your glass bottles into the sea and let the waves turn them back into sand.
You're an asshole!
Glass is a sustainable construction material.
And now it does
Some comments don't have a reply even after 7 years
D R Your does now
Agreed, I've always thought this. Mines of the future.
Hi, Your from?
1:05.
Man that's a lot of glass bottles.
It just one ginormous and long as pile of glass bottles
Name of the machine please
what a smashing story.
We see what you did there! :)
how much does it cost to process the used glass?
40 quid on a monday
*0:50** So the glass is crushed*
Not necessarily... But glass does break... Optical sorters recognise the different colours down to about 1cm size.... White, brown and Amber is the three colours...
How many times can you recycle glass? How bout the colored ones?
Unlike plastic or paper, glass is infinitely recyclable without losing it's purity. Once coloured it is hard to make clear again, which is why most recycled glass is brown in colour. i.e brown bottles!
brilliant video
i love recycling
does anyone know if this recycling system needs water?
Amazing guys
Can broken angles been recycled?
That depends on the size of the structure. Personally I find that larger angles get stuck in the hole

Our local Amenity Tip does not recycle Glass?
Sorry to hear that:(
Hi, can someone enlighten me?
I've read that broken glass is not recyclable. Some sites claim the strength of broken glass is reduced.
But in the process, the normal ones are still crushed into cullets. Providing if we can get broken glass into recycling plants safely (without harming waste handlers), is broken glass still recyclable? Or because it was broken not accordingly to the recycling process, it would never be recyclable again?
Thanks.
Hello Lam, Devon accepts broken glass bottles as the glass is completely crushed to be melted and reused. There is no way to recycle glass that doesn't involved crushing and melting it, so we don't know why the strength of the broken glass would be an issue! We don't accept broken drinking glasses or vases etc though as they are made from a different sort of glass which may be what you are talking about?

thank you very much interesting
I was called a glass recycling company in Constanta (not just one, but this is the cake of them), on papers,, of course he has a site online. Sites online we have a ton, with recycling principles and stuff. Yeah moralistic stories everywhere !!! I called the most official Constanta recycling system possible. "Sorry we don't take anymore glass because THE GLASS COLLECTOR PARTENER COMPANY WE WORKED WITH HAS FINISHED THEIR ACTIVITY AND CLOSED !!!"😈🤬😡😠
P.S. THERE IS CURRENTLY NO WAY TO RECYCLE WINDOW GLASS IN CONSTANTA, A CITY WITH 500.000 INHABITANS !!!
THE CONSTANTA IS AN EUROPEAN UNION CITY !!!🤪😜😟
I have an amount of glass nuts, about two thousand tons
wow, this video is 10 years old
I know it takes me back to a simpler time when recycling videos were cool. What about you?
@@evie16106 lol i dont even remember commenting on this video probably watching this for geography LOL
We need to replace some plastic products for glass products.
My school sent me this link in science

@@jakepeto2496 fair enough
im from devon its nice
Mam i need glass to import to india.
I'm glad that people Back then didn't recycle but just throw it in a hole and bury it for me to find it 80 years later.
It is not possible to use the glass cullets in concrete as an aggregate.

COOL
First world countries tend to throw out a lot of glass without it being recycled because they really don't care. and there is no one to go through it piece by piece. In third world countries the glass can often be sold, so everyone recycles it and if they dont the garbage men sort through it all to pull out all plastics and glass to help supplement their terrible salaries. Just saying
nice
Some bs coca cola rep came to our town to tell us not to recycle glass, and just do more plastic. Like dude he is totally told to say this by coke to make him look good and for them to make cheaper bottles/save in shipping costs. I'm pissed lol
dont you ever talk about coke like that fucker

to play devils' advocate, you do know we recycle all types of glass here in USA right? we have over a thousand of recycling plants in the united states.. I have issues with d guy too but everyone knows all first world countries recycle easy things like glass lol...

I hope that glass is sterilized before being remade. I don't wanna bottle that came from so,somebody's mouth. Ugghhh :/
did you miss the part about 1000 degrees?
And in America, they say broken glass isn't recyclable under any circumstances LOL. Bullshit excuse not to do the work.
I just read New Zealand with 38% has the highest vibrator ownership in the world. Since all is recycled already (good), I think about moving to NZ and start a vibrator recycling center...
