People get surprise presents because they have this idealised vision in their head from cultural depictions of gift giving, instead of a realistic appraisal of what a person would like based on genuine empathy. Genuine empathy is rare in my experience, most people project their own ideals and experience onto everyone around them rather than actually making an effort to understand how others actually think and feel.
