  • I first heard this song on UA-cam a few years ago, but the quality wasn't all that great and I was disappointed to not find it on any streaming services. So I bought a used copy of the CD for like 6 bucks and ripped the entire album. I hope y'all appreciate this.
It came from a compilation called Future Soundtrack for America that came out in 2004, and includes 21 other songs. If people want me to upload them then I'll do that.

Always amazes me that this song didn't make it to an album. This compilation was released in 2004, soon after Transatlaticism.
It seems to me that this song would have fit perfectly onto the The Stability EP (2002) - my favorite EP, along with The Forbidden Love EP (2000).
    Here are the lyrics:
The morning sun's about to break,
I'm looking in as you create someone,
You lift your head and brush your teeth,
And make your bed as if you won't sleep again,
You fix your hair and tie your shoes,
And tuck your shirt and now you feel new.
The glass is full, the glass is broke,
And every day dissolves and there's no hope
Of ever leaving this temporary life.
Of ever leaving this temporary life.
You may ask yourself "is there anyone so alone?"
But there's no beep before the dial-tone
When you pick it up to see who called
If there is it's probably your mom
But, oh, the rising sun brings little cheer
To this city with the stolen name
And you're wondering whose bright idea
It was to pack your things and leave your friends
    And move down here.

Thanks so much for this. I've been listening to this song since 2007 and could only find that low quality version.

This is of their greatest songs IMO. I have never heard them play it anywhere live, online, b-side session, or otherwise. When Ben did his COVID at home concert series he never broke it out.

thank you for posting!! this album was a very specific part of my childhood (my mom bought this album as part of the fundraiser it was for and played it in the car all the time) and introduced me to so much cool music. death cab for cutie was definitely one of the first ones i started following when i got older. i remember meeting someone who was a huge death cab fan and i ended up being the one to show them this song and it instantly became their favorite. it’s a shame this didn’t get a full release. i think it’s one of their best songs. it’s certainly my favorite by them
