Thanks for all your amazing advice
Thanks Peter! Wow what a great surprise, thank you. Not sure how you found me but I know you. If I ever get to your side of the world i'll have to come and say hi. Keep up the great model photography vids (B&W model shots is my usual too.. you have some great models!)
your voice sounds so clear and strong!! keep doing what you're doing
Thank you! I talk better away from home (I have thin walls so I talk quietly normally I think). Something I need to improve. (Handholding the mic helps)
Nice assessment Matt. I started out as a newspaper photographer in 1979 and loved it for several years. After a while the job became 'more of the same' and it squashed my creativity and love of photography. I stopped taking photos full time and moved into management went about 10 years without picking up a camera. It was only when my kids were born I started up again. Making your hobby your job can certainly kill your hobby. I think the youtube model is a better option as you do what you want and not what you're forced to do.
Hi thank you and thanks for sharing your route. Yes I think this is quite common (I get quite a few people writing to me as they return to photography or return to film after a period). My UA-cam route wasn't planned but as I learn I try to adapt it to me.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom What's funny is my daughter (25) loves film photography. I wish I still had access to a darkroom to show her how to dev & print. I should look on Marketplace for an old enlarger and some dev tanks.
Identical experience, glad you found your passion again. I have found I have a much better eye for composition now as well!
I appreciate your videos... continued success in 2023!
Thanks Domenico, sorry about the focus issues in this video.
One of the best most honest assessments.
Thank you! Much appreciated.
Matt, you do great work with your vids and outstanding portrait work! You really are an artist that understands the gear you are using. As a 'UA-camr your channel is kind of 'niche channel focusing on Leica stuff which is not as popular as Nikon,Canon,Fuji/etc. but to me more its interesting. I have learned so much about Leica cameras and M type lens that a few month ago I knew nothing about! Sounds like you picked that right path to mix photography with enjoyable life style along with meeting those fantastic models! If I was a pro photographer and had to do weddings every weekend I would go back to my day job. Keep up the good work as there is no channel like yours on UA-cam.
Thanks so much! Very kind and I appreciate your feedback 🙏🏻
Very insightful Matt, wishing you much success in 2023
Thanks Kev! Just sharing stuff i've learnt that might help others.
Bravo Matt, a great consistent story about how to make a living as the "new"kind of Photographer.
I think you are supporting and advising a lot of people who are on the edge of going pro like yourself.
IMO you hit all the resources where starters can make some money to assure a stable income to cover the "standard"costs of living.
Well done, man, and sun on your path to the future. 🌞
Thanks RS, appreciated.
Happy 2023 year!!!
Thanks Bernard! HNY!
It's awesome to see how much photography has changed! I would've been more inclined to choose a career in photography if all these options were open to me 45 years ago. Regardless of my passion for photography I knew I would've never been able to make a living with it had I needed to only made money based on producing images based on someone else's needs. I have nothing but admiration for those that made a living in this art. Just happy with the photographs I've taken in my life and the flexibility I've had never having been pigeonholed into just one genre.
Thanks! Yes this is why I didn't consider going pro 10 years ago (not that I could back then). I guess it's just trying to adapt to the ever changing world!
Thank you, Matt!
Thanks Greg, no problem!
Fascinating topic. There used to be an old joke that during the tourist off-season the residents of the Isle of Man eked out a living by taking in each other's washing. It was a joke because mainstream economists said it was clearly impossible actually to make a living that way. And yet, here we are... supposing for the sake of demonstration there were only two photographers in the world. Each of them spends half his/her "working hours" taking photos for fun and making videos about it, and the other half watching the other photographer's videos. As long as there are advertisers who want photographers to see their ads, UA-cam will pay BOTH of them to do that! It seems like taking in each other's washing, yet it does seem to work, at least for some people. What a time to be alive, as the Two Minute Papers guy says...
Ha thanks James, nicely put! .. and sorry about the focus in the video (I didn't see til after)
Many thanks for sharing!
Thanks, no problem!
My take on this is that if you are a UA-cam photographer the monotony of making , editing, uploading content is just as tedious as doing endless weddings. Very few UA-camrs are actually good photographers, present company excepted. They talk well but very few have an eye for it. Just MHO of course
I’ve been doing weddings for 20 years now and you can get great inspiration from the greats. I recently picked up a book by Jane Bown and saw the best cake cutting shot I’ve ever seen and it was taken in 1957, so there is always inspiration out there you don’t have to shoot template weddings
Thanks David! Sorry I was not trying to bash wedding shooters. I love them but when I get a backlog to edit that's about the only time it feels like work. The couples and venues make them fun and I enjoy the problem solving aspect. As you can see i'm still trying to learn how to speak so i'm a photographer not a "proper UA-camr" but again I enjoy the steep learning curve of trying to improve with each video (not usually noticeable haha). As I use a lot of different kit it keeps it interesting as lots of things to make videos on. Thansk for the book tip. If I start doing weddings more frequently I will have to check it out.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Oh I didnt think you were bashing wedding photographers, I was. The standard of wedding photography is at an all time low and unfortunately most have never heard of any of the "greats" so just plod along producing the same old same old. I have to say its the same for UA-camr photographers in the main. Its easy to read a spec sheet and then tell me whats good and not in their opinion, but as soon as I see one of their images I either stay or leave. Most IMVHO have no idea what a good image is. I subscribe to your feed because its very valuable as I start to be a Leica only shooter both personal and professionally, plus you take good images that I respect . Keep it up.
It's good to see you out there making a living as you have much to share in how to take photos and now how to make money. You will be changing lives for the better. Huzzah! ;o)
Thanks Zoltan! I promised a few viewers I'd make a follow up vid. Back to gear for the next one!
Awesome insight
Thanks Alan! Just my 2p worth (as usual!)
I see another split in recent trends. Gear promoters and gear lovers, and Art of photography lovers fascinated by light itself. Unfortunately, first group prevails. I will rather shoot as hobby photographer with my passion for light, rather than end up in first category. But we all make our choices.
Thanks Ivan! Yes agree I think there are more gear vids. I'm 50:50 artist + gear head but people seem to want the gear vids I do. Yes light is king! :)
Great points Matt cheers. Back in pre-digitl days I shot weddings, these days I shoot for a newspaper and for personal projects, so I have a regular photography based income, I do have passive income via other means, but have just yesterday monetised my wee channel, I don't expect much from it, but it will build with luck and work. One thing though when I'm dead and gone where does any passive YT income go, can I nominate a beneficiary? Cheers Paul
Hi Paul, great to hear your situation. YT is a long game but eventually it works if you keep at it (and have the time for it*). Really cool point on the income after we've gone. It keeps pumping out money to that email address account so as long as someone has access to it they can get it (Basically like someone paying £100 into a passed relatives bank account every month, if a relative has access they can access it).
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom outstanding mate cheers for the info I'll add my email address to the old will haha I might not make a living from it now but my kids might get a few quid when I toast. On that morbid note have an awesome new year mate
Hey Matt, I purchased your ebook but there is a problem with the download, the download link is a random file with no extension. The link below points to an online Google doc file.
Hey Doc, sorry about that. It was probably the other link you needed to click. Can you email me and I can send you a direct link to the file - mosbornephotography@gmail.com
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I clicked on the other link, duplicated the Google docs file and exported to PDF. Everything is OK.
@@doctorstrobe perfect, thanks for letting me know!
Nice one
Thanks!
Really interesting video, thanks. But you are out of focus on the video. It's the background that is in focus unfortunately and not you. I love your videos, it was just a little thing that matter for me.
Hi Cedric, thanks. I'm really sorry about the focus. I edited on a iPad and didn't notice on the small screen otherwise I would have scrapped it. Sorry about that. I'll fix for next time (and make sure).
I could be making bank and driving lambos but choose to keep it as a hobby 🙈
Haha thank Thomas :) ..cant believe I shot and edited the full video and didnt notice it was not in focus.. school boy error
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I mostly noticed your voice sounds different, new mic?
@@sunny16portraits same as last 3 but maybe it was the morning rough sound 😂
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom yeah noticed in earlier vids too
Boxing Day?
(Day after Christmas day)
I’ve found a niche in divorce photography.
Ha thanks
The main difference is: Peter Lindberg did amazing photographs and not of girls with silicon breast implants,
Yes Peter L was a legend. I wish I had his big portable black tent and crew at times!
Great shame
Thanks Mike, yes fast moving times (probably a bit like when digital first arrived and so the film pros had to adapt to survive).
