I just love how countries, lets say starting with letter C got their 6-10 minutes of fame all those years ago and here we are with 28 minutes of Tonga episode.
This makes me sad because two of my top eleven favorite countries both start with the letter C :/
yeah, i am glad portugal starts with "p" so the episode was made on a more established geography now channel. it's normal that the first episodes are smaller, the show developed along the years, but yeah i pity some countries that had smaller episodes.
I mean for a sub goal we could probably get them remastered
the oldest countries should be made once again
@@somekindofaperson yeah my country starts with a "b"
One of amazing things about Tonga is that in 1939, after the German invasion of Poland, the Kingdom of Tonga was among the first to declare war against Germany. Subsequently, as a result of a public campaign the people of Tonga funded two Spitfire fighter aircrafts. At that time the Kingdom was ruled by Queen Sālote Tupou III. Such a small remote country helped Poland before their allies like France or UK even realized what had happened. It is a small fact but really shows how exceptional these people are.
That's pretty amazing. It's also pretty cool they funded the Spitfire's. I imagine they fought in the Pacific Theater as well, being that they were in that general area.
World War II was won with British intelligence, American steel, Russian blood, and Tongan fighter aircrafts.
@@Jiji-the-cat5425 yes! Tonga did participate in the war against the Japanese during the Solomon Islands Campaign alongside the Solomon Islands, the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji.
Strange that Germany didn't surrender after Tonga declared war to them!

@@mjhmab the truth needs to be said. Honestly nobody really cares about the co hosts, they ruin the episode. Sometimes because their accents make it hard to understand the info about the country. And a lot of ppl are doing it just so they can be popular on UA-cam, notice how they’re more happy about themselves being shown than they are willing to contribute to the episode in meaningful ways
The Hunga Tonga eruption in January was insanely powerful. It's estimated it was the strongest volcanic eruption since Krakatoa in 1883 and stronger than any nuclear weapon explosion making it the biggest explosion to ever be recorded by modern technology. People heard the explosion as far as Alaska. The Tsunami that was generated by the collapse of the island reached 15 meters in some places. It's honestly a wonder only 3 people died.

Just a little thing though, whilst Art was talking about the National Rugby League team (20:10) the pictures on screen were of the National Rugby Union team. They are two separate teams.
Keep up the good work, and looking forward to the UK episode. Hopefully you'll mention Cornwall and it's language and culture!

Yeh, I always thought rugby union was bigger in Tonga, especially rugby 7s. They may be better ranked in rugby league (not completely sure about this), but they are well known for their exploits and especially the very attacking way they play rugby union.

@@mattpotter8725 Yeah you have to consider Rugby Union (15 players) is more popular globally than Rugby League, easily they have a lower ranking in Union (they are always like 13-16) but still having a great team.

FUN FACT, PAUL! In Chile 🇨🇱, especially in the southern part, specifically in Chiloé Island, a local delicacy is "Curanto" (from Mapudungun language "Kurantu", Kura being "stone"). It is basically lots of seafood, fish, pork, chicken and sometimes beef, put on a grill or directly on the burning charcoal and stones, and then covered with leaves and even a little bit of dirt, and more stones. All is cooked by the steam, and is really delicious. It is believed that Polynesians got in contact with the local Mapuche people (Williche/Mapuches of the South), having trade between them, and leaving some influence, such as the UMU that became CURANTO/KURANTU.
Also the Kollongka or Mapuche Chicken has roots from the Polynesian Chicken, so at least in this part of South America, the first to arrive were not Europeans but Polynesians. Greetings from the South Pacific, the "End of the World", CHILE 🇨🇱
That so cool umu is deff Maori and Samoan earth oven 😄
Sweet potato definitely came from the south americas. We eat sweet potatoes like no other here in Polynesia.

Mentioned it in the words-only commentary, but Hunga Tonga eruption was actually heard in Canada's Yukon Territory. That might beat Krakatoa as the loudest sound in human history.
Krakatoa was heard in Ireland and the sound circulated the earth 3 times
Learning about the pacific island nations is so cool, we are hardly taught anything about them in school. I found it interesting that some of the islands are suffixed with "tapu", in Hindustani (the colloquially used mix of Hindi and Urdu often spoken in North India), islands are also called "tapu". Though I think that a connection is not likely to exist. Great video Barby! Excited for Trinidad and Tobago, especially because there are so many Indians there! Love from India!
An actual Tongan other Polynesian may have to correct me, but I think in one of those cases, "tapu" there means "holy", which is actually the origin of the English word "taboo".
I know Shiva is a Hindu deity, so if your at a party and somebody tell you siva in samoan you should dance 💃 also you should check out rongorongo and indus script too hehe

The Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha'apai eruption in January was rated a VEI 6 largest explosion since Krakatoa in 1883 with the ash plume reaching over 55 kilometers into the air basically going into space and may have small impacts on the global climate
Actually novarupta in 1912 was also larger

In the sports section I think you mistook the NRL for the AFL. There aren’t a lot of (any?) Tongan players in the AFL (Australian Football League) but there are heaps in the NRL (National Rugby League) two vastly different sports.
Also, don’t forget there is a fair size difference between Rugby and Rugby League - Rugby (on its own) refers to Rugby Union (15 man no tackle limit and played in more countries) - Which Tonga is ok at - while Rugby League is 13 a side with a six tackle rule (there are other difference of course) and played in less countries - but Tonga is pretty good at at League (mainly because there aren’t that many countries playing it and there are a lot of Tongans in the NRL which is the pinnacle competition of the sport.
