  • Josh Groban, Denée Benton, Lucas Steele and the cast of "Natasha, Pierre and The Great Comet of 1812" perform at the 2017 Tony Awards at Radio City Music Hall on June 11, 2017 in New York City. The medley included renditions of "Dust and Ashes" and "The Abduction" among other songs.
    Touted by presenter Keegan-Michael Key as "rock, pop, soul, folk, electronic dance music and classic Broadway," the show is based on a section of Leo Tolstoy's Russian novel War and Peace.

    Dear Evan Hansen isn't a bad show, but compared to this..?!? Gosh I get chills every time I watch this performance. There's just so much life in that stage. Even from behind our screens, I feel like you can feel the happiness and energy in that room. The music, staging, actors, and everything else about this show was incredible. It's so sad that it ended so early. Hoping the revival and/or national tour comes soon!! :D

      Dear Evan Hansen won because it so intimately and accurately captured the human heart and its day-to-day personal struggles.
      There’s never been anything that made me feel so seen and heard, as it did for so many others all over the world.
      As the show itself says: You Will Be Found!
      Where was the message that people took from Great Comet? Hmm??
      There’s a thousand pieces like Great Comet that present characters and their loves in this very elaborate and melodramatic way.
      You’d be lucky to find something that matches Dear Evan Hansen.

    • @lorenasiu3113
      @lorenasiu3113 2 роки тому +60

      @@samosullivan1744 dear Evan Hansen won because it was more popular, because the songs are very poppy, relatable and digestible. The story is not a heartfelt one, but rather deceitful. It is about a kid that lies about being the best friend of someone who committed suicide, then gets everything he ever wanted, an the consequences of what he did are not even that harsh. I get that Evan may be relatable but the “you will be found” thing is honestly horrible in context, the suicide of Connor was used as a device to move the story forward and it is exploited because everything evan does is seen as he is a victim. Since the musical doesn’t really treat Alana and Jared seriously enough as fully fleshed out characters we don’t get to see how much of a jerk Evan is. We are forced to relate more with Evan since he is the protagonist, but it is actually a twisted tale that screams, oh poor thing, he’s got social anxiety and depression, and on top of that he is lonely, we should feel bad for him even if he destroys a family and betrays the trust of other people who don’t matter because they aren’t poor Evan who has a mental illness .
      I don’t think deh should be praised with best musical because it does not have an honest story nor I think it deserves to win a tony for best orchestrations, they are minimalistic, they are intimate and fit the mood, but really? Great comet was better in that category.

      @@lorenasiu3113 It is an honest story, because it portrays modern-day people with all their flaws.
      Besides, the whole story leads up to the characters revealing the truths about themselves they don’t want to admit (Evan’s suicide attempt, for example), so I honestly don’t see how you can’t call it an honest story!

      @@samosullivan1744 I love Dear Evan Hansen. It's one of my favorite musicals. But I have to agree that this one is better. To address your final point first: you say there's no piece that matches Evan Hansen? There absolutely is. Next to normal. It had the same director and the two shows are fairly easy to group together- they both portray a character's struggle with mental health, a family's struggle with loss, and they have some sort of hallucination-ghost person (Gabe in n2n and Connor in deh). But next to normal is easily better from an objective standpoint and, honestly, an emotional one. Everything means something. Every color (be it referenced in lighting, costumes, or even lyrics), every phrase, every note, everything. Every character is so well developed. Diana's struggle with mental health is real. Next to normal is probably the most effective musical I've ever seen, though I do think great comet is up there as well, I just haven't had as much time to analyze it (I'm not sure it'll top n2n for me, but it's definitely very strong). The reason I say it's better from an emotional standpoint is that it lacks the problematic parts of deh that many people have pointed out. Evan is a liar, and he's not a good person. I don't believe that every protagonist has to be good, or that everyone who acts poorly has to be punished. That's not how it is in real life, and this is more real. But if you want to have your fanbase be able to self insert them into your main character, he should probably not base all of the removal of his struggles on the lies that he tells a grieving family. And then there's the thing pointed out by many people struggling with Evan's issues- they're not realistic to what it's actually like to have social anxiety. Even ignoring the circumstances under which you will be found is performed, it's most certainly problematic.
      Great comet may not have an underlying message, but it also doesn't have to to be a great or even original musical. What message does cats have? And yet, that held the title of longest running musical for years before phantom topped it (and what's the message of phantom? I dare you to find one that you can truly convince me is the message, there are plenty of great things that you can take away from it, but I don't think any of them are the overall purpose of the show, and I'm *quite* familiar with it. It's maybe not the biggest masterpiece ever, but it is generally well written. Not every great show needs a takeaway to be great.)
      And yes, of course there are lots of musicals similar to great comet. That's the beauty of inspiration. But I dare you to find one that does quite what great comet does with its staging and its audience. By far, the music in this show is better than deh- deh doesn't have bad music, and I quite like the way words fail is done (though I'd argue that's not exactly the only show that's done a song that way, see flowers from hadestown, also uses the non repetitive style to drive in how defeated they feel). But the music in this show is incredible. It's interesting. Dear Evan Hansen uses a more basic pop style, and while that isn't bad and it's also not like great comet reinvented the musical theater style, it's not nearly as unpredictable or unique. And it's well written. The little things that are included. And some of that can be attributed to the source material, I'm sure, but it also takes a great writer to adapt something effectively and include those details without it feeling forced. For example, Natasha saying 'I love him. I know him' about Andrey and 'I love him. I love him' about Anatole. It's a stark difference in their relationships. She knows Andrey. It's safe. She doesn't know Anatole, but she loves him. It's a blink and you miss it difference, but it drives in character. Or the similarities between Anatole and Helene being driven in by how they try to convince Natasha to come to the ball. They use the same phrase- you will be the prettiest there. It's those little things that make a musical truly amazing. I dare you to find more than a few in deh. I've noticed these, and I'm pretty sure I've seen more, in the week that I've been listening to great comet.
      And again, man, the staging! It's just incredible. I'm planning to be a director someday, and I'd kill to get to block something on a stage like that. The opportunities for audience interaction- and the way that they use them- and the three-dimensionality of it? It's exceptional! And it's used so well, too. The audience interaction is very well placed, used to drive in tension, give character to the show and to the characters themselves, it lets the people watching connect to it.
      Obviously I can't name every example of all of these things cause this is long enough as it is but much as I do love and enjoy deh, this show is just better. Imagine sitting in that theater while it's playing. As neat as it would be to see deh live, there's no way it could compare to great comet. Even if you're not in the middle of the stage or on the far sides, even watching from the normal seats, the way it's built makes it all so much more intimate. Which also allows you to connect to the story.

      @@juliasings6131 Alright, challenge accepted!
      The message of Cats is about the dangers of tribalism (a very important one for these divided times) as the Jellicles learn to accept Grizabella back into their tribe.
      There are multiple messages in Phantom but I’d say the most recurrent one is to not hide yourself.
      We see it in Christine’s journey from nervous, led-by-the-nose chorus girl to Opera Star who takes matters into her own hands and in her endeavours to take off the Phantom’s mask. And by the end, he learns her message deciding to leave his underground hideout leaving his mask behind.
      “It’s over now, the music of the night” - He’s moving out of the dark and into the daylight.
      And at the very end, when Meg holds his mask up, it’s like she’s holding it out to the audience as if to say: What do we do now? Do we cover ourselves up out of fear of being shunned by the world or conceal our true loves for another? You’ve seen this story, what about yours?

DEH has like three or four chords and boring instrumentals. Comet has such a new and interesting set of chords and instruments it's insane. Sadly there'll never be another musical like Comet due to the treatment of the show

    I will never stop being pissed off that this show didn't win best orchestrations or best original score. Like giving those awards to Dear Evan Hansen is sick and twisted. Dave Malloy was ROBBED. The Great Comet was nominated for 12 Tonys and only got 2, they gave this performance and came away with just 2 from 12. If I try and comprehend how that was the case I lose brain cells. So sad I'll never see this show live.

    • @TheTradge
      @TheTradge 9 місяців тому +2

      It''s cos DEH was super over-hyped and this show sadly didn't receive anywhere near the widespread attention it deserved, plus shows with actual orchestras rather than bands these days tend to get overlooked, in spite of the fact that it's MUCH harder to properly orchestrate than it is to write for a 5 or 6 piece band. Don't get me wrong, DEH has some fab music, but it's all very "pop" and panders to a wider demographic, whereas the Great Comet score and songs are far better crafted and display a great deal more intelligence, elegance and subtlety of composition than the overtly heartstring-tugging, ostentatiously uplifting nature of Pasek and Paul's music.

    This show just made its Canadian premier in Toronto. I was luckily enough to just recently see it. It is one of the most underrated and unforgettable musical productions I have ever seen. It’s one of my new musical obsessions. I will never forgive the Tony’s knowing that this lost to Dear, Evan Hanson.

    I have never seen this beautiful show, but I have been listening to the album for well over a year. Like everybody says, it deserves a lot more credit. This show is tied with Rent as my favorite and best Broadway show ever. I even made my senior quote a couple of lines from "Pierre". Also, this is one of the best and most revolutionary shows of the past few years, and of all time. (A lot better than, Hamilton, among others, even though I am still a big fan).
    Also, thanks for uploading this!
