PODCAST: The 2023 Grammys did Beyonce wrong again!

- The only reason the Grammys had to exist was to finally give Beyonce one of the big awards, and they couldn't do it yet again!! Incredible. The Grammys do what the Grammys do.
If Taylor had gotten up on stage and done a "I'm gonna let you finish" moment to Harry, she truly would have been the anti-hero
that would have been banger
why would she want to parrot the bit of a bipolar anti-Semite
@@ben.7661it is because he has all the money, support, and resources in the world and still chooses to not treat it. his bipolar is not a choice or flaw, but his refusal to seek help is.

It's certainly not a fawking positive.
James Corden making a joke about how he's clearly the first name that comes to people's minds when they think Dance/Electronic music is the only joke of his I've laughed at because he seemed in genuine disbelief that he was up there presenting that award
Not to mention his carpool karaoke show beat her homecoming Netflix special at the Emmy’s. Just ludicrous to have him present that award.
his humility was completely false. He is a partner in the production company that made the decision.
@@agustin1027 That's STILL the silliest decision the Emmys have made.
He was alright on gavin and stacey, yhough he was still the worst part
@@zefizefi2006 Perfectly true but I'm willing to understand if they were on ringers at that point.
At least Jack Harlow was spared from the Macklemore curse.
For now...
That whole Macklemore thing was so unfair. So many people shat on the guy for a decision that he had nothing to do with. And even though his text message to Kendrick was pretty cringey, at least he tried to make things better? Seriously, how tf was it his fault that the Grammys voters have dodgy taste in hip hop, wtf.
@@gracecarpinter8623 Yeah I felt bad for the guy he seemed nice
What's the Macklemore curse?
@@kittykittybangbang9367 The Macklemore curse is referring to when Macklemore won Best Rap Album over Good Kid. Maad City by Kendrick Lamar and suffered a massive amount of backlash. If Jack Harlow had won over Kendrick, he would have been so badly dumped on.
I'm sobbing at "Why should Abba win? Well I'm glad you asked. I'm a sociopath." 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I'm just imagining whoever was rooting for them in that meeting saying that and then leaning back in their chair , arms crossed , with a satisfied smirk on their face.
I mean 😂 id be mad if they'd only win only to thwart Beyonce. But the thought of ABBA winning a Grammy doesn't make me mad on principle lol ❤ I bet their live performance would be so fun lol. 🔥💪
Harry’s claim that “people like him don’t normally win awards” made my eyes roll all the way to the back of my head.
That statement would hold more weight if it was said by artists like Thundercat.
Why he meant it in the sense he’s from a humble background what’s wrong with that?
so goofy and tone deaf
@@barnaby4232 there are a lot of artists who come from humble backgrounds who have won grammys/grammars though, so what did he really mean?
@@nightlove5642 no there isn’t they are relatively few so they nearly always mention it when they win.
Hahahahaha, Taylor getting up to defend Beyoncé 's legacy would have been something! Bigger than The Slap!
Beyoncé actually won Song of the Year for 'Single Ladies'
Yes.
Was just saying that myself tonight. The “only “ notable song I can recall. Don’t get it 🤔
Todd hates that song so it makes sense he'd forget it. Go back and watch his Worst of 2009 video. He absolutely hated Beyonce up until five years ago.
And now i'm off to watch single ladies and give a view to Beyonce, tyvm!

So it turns out that a 2 hour Grammys special celebrating 50 Years of Hip Hop is indeed being filmed in August, so more than likely, a lot of the names that seemed like they were missing from the Grammy performance will be part of the special.
That'll probably be better than the whole GRAMMYs of the year. In fact, the Hip-Hop portion of the show was 1 of the best things from this year's ceremonies.
I look forward to this more than the actual ceremony.

The Grammys nominated Chris Brown. Chappelle won a Grammy. Having a category for Best Social Message or whatever rings pretty damn hollow in context.
Oh, the Grammys didn't just nominate Chris Brown. He *won* multiple Grammys. In 2012. And Dave Chappelle wasn't the first POS comedian to win - the year before, noted sexual offender Louis CK won a Grammy. Not to mention Dr. Luke has been nominated for multiple Grammys after they made such a song and dance about supporting Kesha in 2018.

First off, I always look forward to this more than the actual awards. and I would like to correct Todd when he said Beyonce didn't win Song of the Year. She did indeed won the Grammy for Song of the Year in 2010 for Single Ladies.
a bad song that also saw her get album robed by swift
I think his point is that in 2010 twitter didn't exist and people are in middle school now who weren't alive then.
That’s literally my least favourite lead single from her. Weird.
Of course that’s the one she won for😭
She should've won VOTY the song is overrated as hell
As a Maneskin stan I won by just them NOT winning a Grammy. Them underperforming means they might start making good music again. That means this was a good Grammy season because I got everything I wanted out of it.
Edit: I don't normally make comments like these but wow. So there's a lot of people who feel the same as I do. Good to see that.
2nd edit: I've been spending an abnormal amount of time thinking about Todd's theory of music stars because I'm trying to figure out where Maneskin belongs in this equation: They either build a devoted fanbase that helps them weather bad albums or they fade away once the hits dry up. I'm leaning towards them being the former. I don't know.
so true bc ive only liked one of their songs since eurovision and i dont even think its that good lmao
Didn't they ditch Reading and Leeds last year to go to the fucking VMAs or something? Ngl it looks really embarrassing how they're trying to break America and ignoring all their European fans, and fans who prefer the music side to the fashion/celebrity culture side
@@everwhatever yeah and i think they ditched it super last minute as well, idk if they were a headliner but that was just shitty anyways
@@iwakeupandboomimarat I thought the new album had some good individual songs, but overall it was just not good the way Il Ballo Della Vita (7/10) and Teatro d'Ira (9/10) was. It's a 4/10 album for me.
Completely agree, I adore their Italian songs (and I don't even speak Italian!) and most of their previous material but was not a fan of the new album at all.
Just want to say, as someone who does not watch the Grammys, VMAs or Eurovision, I do appreciate your post show breakdown episodes. They’re definitely something I look forward to if I’m more or less conscious of when the shows are happening.
James Corden is very good friends and partners with Ben Winston, the producer of the Grammys which explains why he was given the presenter slot for Beyoncé's historic win
Just a minor correction, Todd: Beyonce HAS won Song of the Year, for "Single Ladies"--but that was in 2010, and it's the only award of the Big 4 that she actually has.
Listen, Kim Petra's win is always going to have asterisk because of the Dr. Luke stuff. The reason I think Doja Cat doesn't/shouldn't get shit is because she is clearly conflicted like Lina said and she was already signed with him before it came out. Kim after everything was already known and defends it. Also Unholy is just a bad song, I'm sorry. It's so try-hard "edgy".
Every cover of Unholy I have heard has been superior to the original and that’s partially because the covering artists have better/more powerful vocals AND are actually edgy.
Also, Kim Petras winning her Grammy has sparked a lot of backlash from transphobic people, which sadly makes up a huge majority of the world's entire population.
I completely agree
@@dw89music73 Im glad there’s a trans pop singer but why does it have to be Kim Petras
I was just tuning in for the DGAF energy that Adele always gives. Her facial expressions are worth the price of entry alone.
Come on, Todd, we need a new Pop Song Review or One Hit Wonderland episode. The world needs to know your thoughts on Flowers....
He still has time to do an April Fool's episode. I have at least one idea of what he could do.
Or another Trainwreckords episode. And I probably know what the next subject is.
@@dw89music73 Oh yeah!! That just turned 5 five days ago!
Is this a "Crash winning Best Picture" moment for The Grammys?
for rap fans, that title will always go to cardi b winning over nipsey hustle and pusha t.
Throwing this out there but Harry’s dancers reported that turntable setpiece was spinning in the wrong direction, which made them perform backwards on the spot.
Watching Harry’s New Order impersonation album win over Renaissance is my villain origin story.
That would had been if Coldplay’s Worst Album
I can't believe I haven't seen or heard much of anything about that In Memoriam - I'm so glad you guys talked about it. It really was as good (and heart-wrenching) as it possibly could've been. The first and probably last time I'll feel genuine appreciation for something the Grammy's did. Well, something they let happen. The performers really did that, especially Quavo.
now the only thing that worries me of next year's grammys is that jax gets a grammy nomination for best new artist. she definitely doesn't deserve it at all, not even just a nomination.
Eh jury's out at the minute. The music she's put out so far in my opinion is not worthy of the award. But I think if she fired every member of her team and hired someone who told her "stop making TikTok shlock. You are 26." I think she could do a heel turn and make good music. Would she ever do that? I don't know but I think it's not out of the realm of possibility.
@@myjunkdrawer8014 i mean, just listen to u love u and tell me, does that kind of artist deserves a grammy? that'll be worse than giving silentó a grammy.
@@noahthomson2774 Don't get me wrong the music she's put out so far is objectively bad. But we've seen heel turns happen before and I don't think it would be so insane if she had one given her industry connections and potential. Like she's not a bad singer and whilst her production is meh and clearly designed to be played about a phone speaker (aka. Middddd) her solo stuff has never sounded bad. I get the vibe she's gotten some very bad advice from her team but if she got a better team something good could happen. Also I blame that Barney monstrosity mostly on Jvke. Except for the song he did with Martin Garrix I've never come close to liking anything he's put out.
I feel like pink pantheress, FLO, new jeans, ice spice and so many others will be contenders too
well if she defeats taylor swift and sza (since those two artists are the only ones getting grammy buzz as of right now) with her godawful song, then i'm hoping she gets the macklemore, ed sheeran, adele and harry styles treatment, but worse!
The Grammys are good when they actually get good people to show up and perform.

Between the fans discussing who should win Best Album, Sir Chex Mix-A-Lot and Sam Smith singing with dancing Sadakos from Ringu, Dr Dre getting an award named after him, Trevor Noah's attempts at comedy -- I don't know which was the most cringe-worthy moment.
Seriously, what was the point of the superfans? To pad out the running time even LONGER?
Oh, wait. Congrats DJ Khaled. You answered the question of who was the most cringe-worthy.
I will never forget the Lemonade snub, it really was the album of that year.. :( it really feels like they just don't want to give it to her :(
Lemonade was a better album than this years album. 25 was better than 30. No one dominated. That helped Bonnie Raitt.
yup - should have won for Lemonade. Also Single Ladies should have won.
@@aintnobody3000 Single Ladies did win in 2010.
Personally, I don't think Beyoncé should've gotten AOTY, but I KNOW Harry's House was not the best one in the nominees list.
Agreed cold play should have won/j
Agreed.
I think Bad Bunny should've won. (I'm not a fan, and maybe I'm biased because I'm puertorrican, and I've seen the impact that album has had here.)
My chaotic evil side kinda wanted ABBA to win just to see the chaos.

There is an alternate universe somewhere out in the cosmos where Bruno Mars didn't decide to withdraw from the Grammys this year, he swept even harder, and it resulted in a riot so massive that it was visible from the planet Mars.
I know that I'm the only one who even remotely cares about this.
@@takemyhand1988 Basically, his album An Evening with Silk Sonic and his other hit from that album, Smokin' Out the Window, came out too late in 2021 to qualify for the 2022 Grammys meaning it would've been eligible for the 2023 Grammys. Bruno Mars decided to withdraw to avoid what happened when 24K Magic won Album of the Year and everyone got mad at him.
@@takemyhand1988 You are correct, and part of the reason they didn't submit anything for this year's Grammys (according to them) is that they were already satisfied with how much they won for Leave the Door Open
Sheryl Crow has more Grammys than the Beatles. This award show's history of getting it right makes the Oscar's look fucking good.

That billy strings diss at 2:20 was completely unwarranted, I am shocked and appalled. (great video/podcast as always though)
Totally agree...I was like, you're all over Beyonce but sleeping on Billy Strings 😐
That wasn't a diss at Billy. The Grammys literally only aired a tiny excerpt from his performance before leading into a commercial break, that's why it was terrible.
I always look forward to this every year
Grammys suck.
When they started giving Grammys to people for simply existing, that's when things started going downhill.
@@pervertedalchemist9944 they started that at the 1st annual grammys
Yeah, because it's more about quantity than quality, just like any major awards show.
"I hate feeling nothing because i feel like I should feel something" that is unexpectedly deep
Questlove tweeted about an August 2 hour special, so hopefully that means a hip-hop tribute show is coming similar to the Paul Simon special which aired in December.
So glad y’all loved steve lacy- pls check out his work w the Internet- ego death especially - Syd and Patrick Paige also part of the internet won as part of beyonces team as they wrote plastic off the sofa ❤ I’m so happy for them
i can name 3 other albums on that list that would've deserved AOTY before harry's house other than renaissance. it still just genuinely doesn't make much sense to me. if not beyoncé, bad bunny winning it would've made the most sense as it was the most globally enjoyed and streamed album of the year. but by western standards (which is what the Grammys usually awards based off of) it was easily beyoncé by a landslide. the academy hates how praised she is and how much power she has as an artist and she's being punished for it.
Looking forward to a new Trainwreckords or One Hit Wonderland, soon.
The only reason why Grammys still exist is so Todd can yell about it
I've never been a huge Beyoncé fan, but even I can recognise that both 'Lemonade' and 'Renaissance' were monumental albums. I thought the album of the year award was meant to be given to the album that has changed the game of music the most. As far as I can see, Beyoncé had the only album that was in any way significant to the music industry.
I'll be honest, I haven't listened to 'Harry's House,' but surely an album of the year contender should be one that would at least come on my radar. I haven't heard a single person say that this album was in any way significant, so for me it just seems like the most odd choice for album of the year.
Well, it depends on whether we're talking about critical reception or popularity among the masses, because the latter isn't a true indicator of what good art is. Another factor is how much the work will influence other artists, but of course, we can't know that for sure in the present.
I'm far from a Beyonce fan too but Renaissance is an amazing record and deserved to win Album of The Year. Harry's House is one of the blandest records of 2022 and it genuinely boggles my mind how the Grammy voters could go with the most milquetoast choice over an actual impactful record that continues to be praised and talked about by critics and fans up to now. But something tells me that Renaissance is going to be hailed as one of the best records of the decade whereas Harry's House I doubt will be considered of the same caliber.
Just went and watched the Busta Rhyme part and that was hype
Tbh i'm damn shocked AOTY didn't go to 30. Adele is the golden child of the Grammys after Taylor so the fact she didn't go 3 for 3 is amazing. Though this just means that Taylor is going to win everything next year and these next 365 days won't be long enough.
taylor isn’t really that much of a golden child in my opinion
Actually Adele is more of a grammy's darling than Taylor imo. She has won multiple grammys for every era except 30 where she won only one. Taylor has only won 11 grammys vs her 46 nominations.(5/9 of her album eras went grammy less). She has never won a SOTY despite being a strong contender multiple times.
@@maroonhalo she’s won album of the year three times despite not being favoured to win two times. She’s a Grammy darling. Also Adele has only released 4 albums. If Adele released an album every year like ztaylor I’m sure she would be snubbed just as much.
The actual stab about the James Corden presenting Beyoncé with that award is his show beat her Netflix special Homecoming a few years back at the Emmys🙄. Talk about robbed.
Beyoncé deserved to win with Lemonade, but not with Renaissance … the Academy’s decision to give it to 25 was a head scratcher. Yes, it was the biggest selling album that year but that was just the residual impact of 21. That was a dumb move on their part. Acing The Weeknd out of a nom for “Blinding Lights” was dumb too
Renaissance was definitely deserving of AOTY. It was had universal critical acclaim and commercial success. Something Harry's underwhelming album didn't have.
@@chriscraven95 It was karma for Beyonce taking the $24 million deal to perform in Dubai.
And besides that, Renaissance was a good album but it didn’t have the impact Harry’s album did.
@@elizabethschubert7803 Beyonces album still hasn’t had visuals released and no promo, she also isn’t a new young artist and is still doing great numbers,m 25 years into her career. And also it’s funny people criticize her for doing the Dubai performance for a private company but don’t have the same energy for actual LGBT artists that petgomrtd in Dubai which include Elton John, Madonna, Lady Gaga and more. Nobody said a peep about that did they? It’s always a problem when Beyoncé is making a load of money. Nobody batted an eye when Rihanna was dating a Saudi Prince, which is way worse. @@SR-zv5ue lmao get lost… this video was about Beyonce. You’re moving the goalposts because you’re obviously biased in her favor. Most of these celebrities have ZERO principles outside of self-enrichment and Bey proved herself to be no different. If she took that $24 million payout from Dubai and donated ALL of it to LGBT issues here in her home country, THAT would be a boss move. Didn’t Beyoncé win Song of the Year for Single Ladies?
Yes she did--I guess it's easy to forget because it was in 2010, but yes she did.
Honestly you guys are right. I actually really did like most of the performances this year apart from Harry's I thought they were super solid and generally I feel like the Grammys kind of botches either the cross-genre stuff or the tributes or both but I thought that was all handled very well. The awards themselves are a different story
I saw the whole show, and until my mom mentioned it, I completely forgot that Harry even performed. That's how forgettable his performance was.

She cleaned up at the Grammys back in the early 90's...and with good reason.
I feel like I need to correct you two a little bit in that the first transwoman to win a Grammy (three of them at the same time, in fact) was Wendy Carlos in 1970. She's ridiculously important in the history of electronic music and practically invented most of the basic techniques used in the genre still today. In another note, Beyonce just became the most awarded person at the Grammys ever. Not just black or woman, the artist with most Grammy wins in the entire history of the ceremony. So sure maybe they did her "wrong" because they didn't give her the big categories for music that was subjectively superior, but let's no act like they don't do anything for her because it doesn't seem like she is gonna stop getting Grammys anytime soon (as long as she realizes music ofc)
Nobody said they don't do anything for her. But them refusing to give her the big awards, is still some bullshit. How does someone who's made three albums of the year, not have a grammy for album of the year?
Out of all 30+ grammys she got, only 1 was part of the big 4 (single ladies SOTY). At this point no matter what she releases, she’ll be relegated to smaller rewards (and ones they specifically made to relegate black people in) as a consolation prize cause apparently nothing she releases is good enough for a big 4 win.
@@donkeykong3628I can see your point. Leo D HAD to win that best actor award because there’s little else they can do other than leave him out completely. Beyoncé however can be given lesser ones till she quits. It’s just weird man. Anyone else go 0-3 or 0-4 or whatever it is? 😯

I really wish the Grammys would stop giving awards for rock/metal, it’s obvious the voters don’t know what they’re voting for.

I can't be mad at Bonnie Raitt winning -- she thought she was there to pay tribute to Christine Mcvie and hear her name be announced as a nominee.
Then Lizzo acts even more shocked than Bonnie Raitt did. C'mon, Lizzo, you were a favorite to win.
And Fleetwood Mac have recently decided to end for good.

I’m… just trying to understand. Maybe they solely go by numbers and sales. 🤔
Within the last two decades they did. Before that, it was based on artistic merit. The only reason why it was changed was because of the questionable win of Jethro Tull in the metal category.

I'm glad she didnt. I did not think she should. Her album was a lot of electronic samples and yes a better album than she has released, but I thought there were better albums. I also don't think Harry should have won
The Heist was a great album. If there was an album that i'm glad won other than TPAB, it's that one.
it was good kid maad city
Some of the wanting Coldplay to win comes from the fact that they were nominated for one award for My Universe, the song they did with BTS. ARMY i think kinda figured them being nominated with Coldplay was probably their best chance of the night to win. But nope. Which, wasn't a shock. ARMY has pretty much collectively decided that the grammys are racist and never really expect BTS to actually win, no matter how many times they get nominated. Which has been...six times total i think at this point?
Coldplay not winning had nothing to do with racism
Grammys are an American award and of course one can argue to include a diverse collection of nominations in terms of the song selections, but that is completely a fair call because they would choose English
That same reason why a lot of Spanish artists have been forsaken
And bts doesn't really have good English songs which could win them
There is no racism, just a reluctance to change
@@nananou1687 i'm not sure if i agree or disagree that the grammys are racist. But it's not just ARMYs saying that. Look at the backlash over Harry Styles being Beyonce.
Feels like it was just last year, love this one
Rich old granny gets to meet Harry. Wow how nice.
I just watch the grammys for the performances. I wish they could be all performances and just do away with awards entirely 😆
Especially considering how and who they decide to give awards to.
im the opposite bc i only care ab the awards lmao
So we’re just not going to talk about how Abba got robbed?
Me and my dad would know if even though ABBA was robbed of an award, it doesn’t mean they lose it entirely. It means they aren’t disaffected by the Grammy curse as much, which is something different.
He's going to the Brits on Saturday!
where have all the train records, and one hit wonderlands gone?
