If you want to get big, you have to lift big weights. That is the advice that you have probably been given by one of the trainers or meatheads at your local gym. The thing is, if you want to know how heavy should you lift to get big, it’s actually not bad advice if and only if you pay attention to one very important point. In this video, I’m going to cover the most important thing you should know when it comes to discovering how much weight you should be lifting when trying to get big in the gym. In fact, even when you just want to build better muscles, this advice still applies and always will unless you are competing as a powerlifter.
That said, the rule goes like this. If you want to know how much weight you should be lifting you only need to answer with the most you can lift without letting your posture succumb to the load. In other words, if your attempt to lift heavy weights makes your back crumble under a squat, or your knees cave in during a deadlift for example then you are lifting too heavy.
The main goal when trying to determine how heavy you should lift or how much weight to use on an exercise is to maintain proper posture under load. It is very easy to maintain a perfect posture on a squat when you are doing a bodyweight version of the exercise. Throw a bar on your back and add a couple of plates and everything could change. The big mistake you can make is thinking that just because your bodyweight squat is performed in good form that you are qualified to do weighted squats.
This isn’t automatically the case. If your posture rounds or breaks down as soon as you add a load you might want to reconsider the weight you are using if you want to stave off gym injuries. I’m not even talking about the injuries that happen on one single rep. I’m referring to those that occur over time as a result of the repetitive breakdown that comes from stringing too many ill performed reps together from workout to workout.
If on the other hand you can perform a lift while maintaining proper posture but feel comfortable with the weights you are using so you don’t add any weight to the bar, this is just as big a mistake. You must try at every opportunity to add more weight to your exercises if you want to develop into a bigger, faster or stronger version of you today than you were yesterday. If you add weight and your form breaks, then drop back slightly and work with the weights you can handle with good form as you aim to increase the reps you can do with it.
Once you get strong enough to handle the load of the new weight, you’re off and running and will have achieved progressive strength and likely size gains.
If you want a complete workout program that shows you how to build strength as well as how to get ripped athletic muscles, head to athleanx.com and get the ATHLEAN-X Training System. See how heavy you should lift and get big by following the advice of a pro athlete physical therapist and strength coach through every one of your workouts.

Why?

its because the weight is supposed to be in kilograms and they have lb for those who use that unit

Im confused.
He's relatively short, holds a fair bit of muscle and weight, why is 500 pounds such a reach?
Im 6'1 and about 5-10kg lighter than jeff and can do a few reps of 300 pounds.
He has years more experience, far more muscle, and probably a far better technique.
And why 2020 for this to become an issue lol
@@Hilly092 the number isn't a reach but the way the weight moves at that weight for a 500lbs deadlift or a 315 bench would be different than in the video. 2 main things, The bar doesn't bend or shoe any give at all during the deadlift, and the way the weight bounces off of the pins in the pin press looks more like he's moving around 135lbs or something so light that he could handle it bouncing like that without any issues.
@@Hilly092 people have too much time on their hands and not enough attention. Next vid he does one handed chin ups they'll say he faked his bodyweight lol
Pound for pound I'm not far off Jeff and I'm nowhere near as dedicated or had the experience with progressive overload

that's not really impressive for a guy. I've seen guys lighter than 145 that can D-lift more than 6.5× their body weight. 😯
That's good advice. Posture and technique are very important. Especially if you want to progress to heavier weights.
5 plates for reps, with no chalk or belt, not pulling the slack of the bar and just jerking it up, by a 42 year old guy who doesn’t train the deadlift. Hmm
he's a known fraud, and he's deleting comments/blocking users fast. his fanboys don't care though and worship him by blatantly ignoring the undeniable facts and evidence provided by so many
Also a bar that’s supposed to be THIS stiff that it doesn’t bend at all when pulling 495lbs
Absolutely disgusting. He is obsessed with money and willing to lie to fans to make more.
@@herbiew4160 Of course he would, he's not that stupid his fanboys are.
Two reps
So, this is where it all started.😁
I'm assuming Jeff doesn't use a belt? that's very impressive he's about 170ish pounds deadlifting close to 500 with no belt. super motivational
+Mark Keller for sure his core is insane. but even people with strong cores (at least i think they have powerful cores) like scottherman uses a belt eventually. and they pretty much weigh the same, but damn lol. core goals
+Abdulisbatman18 he doesn't use a belt "in this given video" doesn't mean he doesn't use a belt at all. Even Scott doesn't use a belt that often he said, only uses it when trying to max out (rarely) or lifting weights around that max that might break down his form. Not saying he DOES use a bell but well, for a quick video which is not about showing off my max, I myself wouldn't use a belt to demonstrate what i am talking about since i know how quick people can see it as a tool to instantly lift heavier weight and totally rely on it during their deadlifts session instead of focusing on strengthening their weak core first.
Belts are risky on the deadlift because many people aren't aware that wide belts often mess up the form by hitting the top of the hips, thus preventing proper back extension in the set-up (thus people either lower their hips too much or collapse their lower backs). For the people who don't make adjustments because of this, lifting with a belt is less safe. I don't use a belt specifically on the deadlift for this reason, use it all the time on the squat though.
+perman07 I'm the exact opposite lol. i don't use my belt as much on a squat. but on dl's I'll usually belt up at about 90% of my 1rm.idk i could see how people can really rely on one. my current dl 1rm is 350 i belt up after 315 most times.

my knees crack like that a lot, sometimes just randomly when walking off the stairs lol
Perhaps u could try regular walking or jogging to try and increase the size of the knee muscles so your joints are not rubbing together. Else it could be from knee damage. Try squats to see how it affects them. If comfortable u may be able to continue that or partial squats. Even a slight knee bend can help. But only suggestions. I'm no expert.
Tony Barfridge there’s no knee muscle wtf
@@Kid82fy There's muscles around the knee. Ligaments surrounding the knee attaching those muscles
I’ve got the same problem as you Jeff! The grinding knees all sound too familiar. I’m so glad to find your leg work out videos. I also have a moderate case of scoliosis, a really tight TFL issue which are all related. 2 pregnancies have put my pelvis out, recently had a snowboarding injury lower back bursitis. But these haven’t stop me training, I’m constantly finding ways to strengthen the surrounding muscles. As I’m an integrative healthcare practitioner myself, I love the science and rationale behind your workout. I’m so glad I found your channel!
I find with low bar squat (wide-ish stance) there is little to no stress on my knees, as my knees don't come out past the middle of my foot. Could also do wide stance box squats to preserve the knees even more. Like Jeff says, if it's causing you a lot of discomfort there are a bunch of variations to try instead.
A year ago I experienced pain when doing squats, and when doing the exercise my hip made a loud crack sound each time.
I went to a physical therapist and he gave me some exercises to strengthen my legs, because it was his understanding that I had some muscle imbalances. The exercises took up a lot of time and I ended up not doing them as the pain subsided a bit.
Later I began to have the same problems and I came across a bodybuilder on UA-cam (think it was Elliot) who described a common problem of knocked knees and how it affects lifting. Immediately recognizing the problem as my own I followed his advice to turn my feet outwards and the cracking and bad form went away. Just shows that slight changes to form can also help you accomplish your workouts without using tons of money on therapists and time on time consuming correctional workouts.

I have struggled with lower back issues for years. I crushed some of my lumbar vertebrae many years ago. For a few years I did no real leg work at all. When I again started trying I would only get so far before my back would become an issue and I would have to stop for a good break to recover enough to start over. Went on like this for years. Saw a video by Jeff that demonstrated exactly what I was doing wrong. Been four, maybe five months and I no longer have back pain. I used to have back pain even when I wasn't doing squats? Since I started squatting without compensating for my "weakness" the pain has gone. I feel that squatting slowly with really strict form is actually helping the vertebrae to seat more securely, I feel horrendously vulnerable and I am really not going very heavy at all? But I am getting more and more used to the sensation so I should be able to start progressing the weight before too long? No pain, for the first time in twenty years I have no lower back pain!!!!!

Jeff, my respect for you doesn't depend on the numbers. You taught me that. I care about looking good and not getting hurt. But I'll gain back some of the respect I just lost if you come clean and address why you claimed more weight than you were actually lifting.
“ don’t count the reps make the reps count”
@PostHawk I get that, and I'm willing to believe that was the intention. But the takeaway at the time was that he could deadlift almost 500lbs.
@@Procoffeiev I'm not convinced a 500lb dead lift is really all that impressive. Any enthusiastic amateur can get there with just a little training. I've seen many people on UA-cam do this and none of them look like body builders or strength athletes to me. In fact, many of them look perfectly normal. That is, no obvious obsessive training. The claim is that Jeff faked this because the weights are too heavy. Why are they too heavy? Too heavy for who? So many people can do this. It really is nothing special.

This video was right on time because I understand exactly what you're talking about with squats. My last session, I was only about to complete 2 of 5 sets of 5 reps at 270lbs, before my right knee started hurting. I stopped immediately for fear of injury if I continued with breaking form. My deadlift form is solid at 295 lbs per my last session and is continually going up.

I have a similar knee condition to you Jeff. I was thinking about signing up for AthleanX a while back and asked if the program could be modified for people like me with knee problems. Your sales/support person said there are ways around knee conditions, but he also said Athlean-X can't recommend exercises that will effectively do this. I realize that Athlean-X isn't a substitute for professional advice, but I was surprised that Athlean-X support can't or won't give exercise substitution suggestions, especially considering you often do this in your videos and say that Athlean-X can be modified to work around problem areas. Don't get me wrong - I am forever grateful to you Jeff for sharing so much knowledge on UA-cam! I was just a bit confused at what I was told by your support team.

I like how a lot of this video was talking about his knees. I have a similar issue in my right knee because of a badly torn (and never properly healed) meniscus injury about 4 years ago. Dead lifts feel just fine, but squats give me a lot of pain and popping. X's videos have helped me a lot in learning ways to deal with this. I have heard people say to "just squat anyway" and such, however X's method of finding ways to load the quads without putting so much tilt in the shins (such as Bulgarian split squats, or reverse lunges) have worked much better, and I feel myself gaining leg strength.
This has to be (even for Athlean X) one of the most sensible and reassuring tips so far and it's heartening to see somebody of Jeff's stature that has the same issue squatting as myself, give solid alternatives
I see too many guys where numbers is all that matters but they forget it's how you tackle those numbers is what counts the most. If there's there no control of the weight you're lifting then there's a good chance momentum is doing most of the work and not to mention bad form.

Squat

Big fan Jeff! Greatly appreciate the effort you make to educate the public. Without the competition on UA-cam.
Could you please explain when doing DL - Is there a benefit to connecting the reps versus letting each individual rep rest dead on the floor?
Thanks again for the great videos!
I’m going through the same dilemma with the knee issues. I have been alternating between different variations to assure I hit every muscle that the squat hits. When I started having difficulty with the high bar squat I went to front squat and it actually wasn’t near as bad. If you have the same issue try front squat. Of course start off much lighter than a regular squat but you may see it can provide another option for hitting a compound leg movement. Nice vid

weak core
@@suryamohan3410 lmao if you look at dr Isratel"s paper, scientific literature supports that there is zero emg activation in the abdominals throughout back squats and deadlifts.
