I read hundreds of fantasy novels when I was a kid, and the Thomas Covenant books are probably my favorite. This is the first time I've heard his voice.
It's the same for me. I am so grateful to have found this. The Covenant books helped shape a lot of my own personal outlooks. I have reread that series many times and find something new to love each time.
@@Gingerwalker. Did you read the "Last Chronicles" that he published in more recent years? They're just as good as the classic ones, but probably didn't get as much notice.
The Gap Cycle and Thomas Covenant books helped me through a lot of hard times in my life, so thank you. It helps that the audiobooks are read by Scott Brick, who does a great job brining the book to life in spoken word. After reading the books several times it's nice to sit back and listen. Can't wait to read some of your newer work. Take care.
I can say with certainty, that aside from the Lord of the Rings, the Thomas Covenant Chronicles are my favourite books. Nice to hear him speak at last!
I was telling a coworker I recently read LOTR he mentioned Thomas Covenenat, I had never heard of it so he leant me the first 3 books and I FLEW through them. The way Donaldson describes The Land and the characters is outstanding. Great interview asking questions and just letting him talk!
SRD has said in interviews that he always refuses to adapt his books into TV/movie because he feels it can't capture the ideas without the narrative format of the books. I tend to agree that HBO could do a great job like they did with the Song of Ice and Fire saga.
Same, I tried reading Covenant, but just couldn't get into it. It was the epic titles of the Gap books which got me reading that series. And wow. That series is my all time favorite from any author. I hadn't read any sci-fi before, and still haven't since. The Gap is true storytelling.
@@mattthepolarbear The Gap Cycle is my second favorite sci fi series of all time, first being Dune. I highly suggest checking out Dune, as it's the best selling sci fi novel ever. Donaldson's writing style is so amazing, and the Gap Cycle really showed off his skills.
Gap Cycle are my favorite series.. I have first print/first editions of all 5 books.. Covenant is one my favorites as well. I have The Illeart War in first print/first edition as well.
Come on, HBO! I will take any producers other than D & D. Thomas Covenent is up there with Tolkien and George RR Martin, although I will acknowledge that it has less of a "feel-good factor".
I honestly don't know if it could translate well into a movie. The books are so reliant on language and prose. I also dont know if they can make that scene (you know the one) work on screen. The switching of perspective during it to Lena is important as well as the internal monologue that makes covenant both detestable as well as sympathetic. To the audience it would just be watching a detestable man get away with it and receive praise. Not to mention the social climate we live in just isnt conducive of showcasing such a scene and you cant have the first chronicles without it. It literally shapes everything that follows.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart Mr. Donaldson.
He is one of my all time favorite authors.
A very good and worthwhile interview. Excellent reflections and some interesting publishing history.

The Gap cycle was maybe the wildest book series I’ve ever read

Seriously why isn't HBO looking to adapt the Thomas Covenant Chronicles?

The effects of health sense alone would make it very hard to adapt.
I would guess Lena.
Excellent interview! Glad I found your channel.
Donaldson is a good author. I've only read his Gap series though.Good books!

I agree. I've read mountains of sci-fi for decades and the Gap Cycle is truly fantastic! Top notch sci-fi.

One of the best modern writers. Too bad he isn't recognised as tolkien and other writers
I cannot wait for someone to look at turning Thomas Covenant into an epic movie series, but I doubt many movie makers have the guts.
@@thomas3803 That's what HBO is for!
