- The cartoon character Popeye has been with us on the movie screen since 1933. It went through several studios over the years, but today we show the LAST Theatrical Popeye cartoon made for the silver screen on 16mm film, in an unusual color process called ANSCOCHROME, similar to KODACHROME. Colors are very bright, and the big advantage was that a hobbyist could actually develop Anscochrome in his home darkroom (Kodachrome could not)! This print is near "mint" and was just sold on EBay.
Todd Tuckey gives you some facts and history and then shares this Public Domain cartoon with you (a clodhopper at Paramount forgot to renew the copyright on it!) He talks abuut the voices for Popeye and Olive Oyl (who MANY of you know as Aunt Bethany from Christmas Vacation!)

I had absolutely no idea that Aunt Bethany on Christmas vacation was the voice of Olive Oyl and Betty Boop. That was such a cool thing to learn!
To tell you the truth, I didn't know either until I started researching Popeye!

I remember watching Popeye on DVD when I was younger and I used to have the all new Popeye show, Popeye and son and all Popeye videos on VHS and DVD
It was interesting to learn the voice of Olive Oyl and Betty Boop was Bethany on Christmas Vacation. It is neat to see your hobbies come together in your business.

I loved POPEYE as a kid in the 90s. I remember seeing them on carttoon network and such. My dad grew up with it to as a ki and loved it alot. It was one of his favs to watch.
I definitely remember watching this episode as a kid, back in the late 70s and early 80s. I had no idea it was the last episode ever released in theater.
Thanks for sharing popeye Todd, I used to watch many of the cartoons on a Saturday morning at my local cinema with my sisters before the Black and White TV hit our home, the Cinema in question got demolished only a couple weeks ago after many years being left unloved by its owners who converted it to a snooker and pool hall over 20 years ago.
Many of us wanted the cinema to be restored back to what it was but with modern projection equipment, but due to the lack of maintenance it was eye marked for demolition has a hazardous building…..
It’s now a pile of rubble and rotting timber being grounded down for use else where. 😔.

When I was in kindergarten through maybe 2nd grade, I had interest in Popeye. Eat your spinach the main truth drop. But after that, I think most people have no interest. By design. And here we have Todd in his 70's, still stuck where most of us let go so long ago. Probably means something.
I have decided to stop ALL cartoon watching on your advice and just watch killing and horror films for my entertainment

Interesting video! I grew up at a time when VHS was taking over but my Dad did use a 8mm film camera when i was a baby. It’s amazing to think how media formats have changed over the years.

Disappointing how Warner Bros (who currently owned the rights to the Popeye cartoons with King Features) hasn't released the rest of the 1940s and the whole 1950s cartoons that does contain the original Paramount titles on DVD, Blu-Ray or recently HBO Max yet.

Hey Todd. I have to correct you. "Billy" Costello was the first voice actor from 1933-1935. He was fired . Jack Mercer was working in the Art Department and mocked Costello's Popeye. The Fleischer's bros. decided to use him as his replacement and debut in 1935 King of the Mardi Gras.
Poor Billy...I heard they fired him like Mr Spacely fired George Jetson!

Jack Mercer Was Not The First Original Voice Of Popeye It Was An Old Actor Named William Costello.

Billy Costello was the original voice of Popeye. When he left abruptly, young Jack Mercer took his place as he did a great imitation of him. Mae Questel actually had to sub at one point and she was the voice of Popeye for 5 or so episodes (ahh you said that). Great reels! I HAD it on film but did sell it...I own mostly cartoons and short subjects...I find they are easier for people to sit through rather than a whole feature film.
