  • Super producer Bob Rock is from Winnipeg, and has also worked with some of the biggest bands in music like Metallica, Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, and Canada’s favorite sons, The Tragically Hip! Bob does a deep dive into the writing and recording process for Metallica’s “Black” album, and the controversial “St Anger.” He shares the one lyric suggestion he gave James Hetfield, the changes he helped the band make to the bass and drum sound, how he got James Hetfield to actually sing in the studio, and the biggest differences between the process of the “Black” album versus “St. Anger.” He also recounts his time with Motely Crue from their first meeting to their recent studio work with new guitarist John 5. He’s got great stories about David Lee Roth and Cher, and even more about The Tragically Hip and late singer, Gord Downie. Bob explains how he and Gord came to collaborate on the new (and truly amazing) “Lustre Parfait” album (which was just released this month), and why it took so long to finish and release.

    I think Bob was the best thing to happen to them from a musical standpoint in some ways. He taught them to try new things, to think differently, not just do what they do because that's how they do it. And for better and worse they did try new things, some were good and some were bad, and not all were received well of course. After Justice they really needed guidance. Justice is a great album, probably their best overall, but they needed help musically to bring out the best performances for all the members. It was kind of sad things went the way they did, I don't think Bob has any bad feelings but I felt like they just kind of dropped him after St. Anger. He seems like a really good dude, though.

      @@kylehoulihan3875 Ride the Lightning, Master and And Justice are 3 of the greatest albums of all time in any genre of music and they were from the same band and in a row, even after the death of Cliff. I have been a Metallica fan since those early days and love many styles of music but the appreciation for those absolute prime years is there forever

      With their current mentality, it would be a second black album, and that could only go two ways: best album of the band, or worst album ever. And you know Metallica obsessed fans will start complaining because they want them to release And Justice For All over and over.

    I've always wondered if Metallica made the Black album or any of their previous albums today using today's technology would it have sounded better or taken as long to do?? Or on the reverse side suppose 72 Seasons were recorded 30 years ago would it have sounded as good as it does today??

    I think James' first ballads were Fade to Black, Sanitarium, and One. I don't think his vocals on Black Album were any more refined or commercial sounding then those songs. The big difference is that Nothing Else Matters had no heavy parts to balance out the more pop sounding vocals.

    Bob Rock was a blessing in the beginning but he almost broke Metallica by the time they released St. Anger.

    • @searchand_destroy666
      @searchand_destroy666 11 місяців тому

      Imo, it was the band's firm decision to head into that direction which of course was a lot of misses than hits when they released it. Lars had made it clear to always challenge the fans over the years. St. Anger has a few songs that I like, be it Frantic, Dirty Window, St Anger and Shoot Me Again. Honestly, watching the St.Anger video as a kid is what got me into Metallica, lol. Bob was there acting as the producer and advisor for the most part.
