Talk Is Jericho: Bob Rock & the Making of Metallica’s Black Album

- Super producer Bob Rock is from Winnipeg, and has also worked with some of the biggest bands in music like Metallica, Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, and Canada’s favorite sons, The Tragically Hip! Bob does a deep dive into the writing and recording process for Metallica’s “Black” album, and the controversial “St Anger.” He shares the one lyric suggestion he gave James Hetfield, the changes he helped the band make to the bass and drum sound, how he got James Hetfield to actually sing in the studio, and the biggest differences between the process of the “Black” album versus “St. Anger.” He also recounts his time with Motely Crue from their first meeting to their recent studio work with new guitarist John 5. He’s got great stories about David Lee Roth and Cher, and even more about The Tragically Hip and late singer, Gord Downie. Bob explains how he and Gord came to collaborate on the new (and truly amazing) “Lustre Parfait” album (which was just released this month), and why it took so long to finish and release.

as both a wrestling and metallica fan, y'all have no idea how quickly i pressed play on this
Same
Young Y2J with the long blond hair always gave me '85-86' James Hetfield vibes 🤘
Bob looks like one of my favorite college professors. And Chris always looks like a rockstar. Not just a wizard.
Much love for Bob Rock, as a Metallica fan for the last 30 years his influence on Metallica throughout the years shows he had a big part in what they did
Fantastic producer. A true legend.
I think Bob was the best thing to happen to them from a musical standpoint in some ways. He taught them to try new things, to think differently, not just do what they do because that's how they do it. And for better and worse they did try new things, some were good and some were bad, and not all were received well of course. After Justice they really needed guidance. Justice is a great album, probably their best overall, but they needed help musically to bring out the best performances for all the members. It was kind of sad things went the way they did, I don't think Bob has any bad feelings but I felt like they just kind of dropped him after St. Anger. He seems like a really good dude, though.
Composition wise and musically their best work is the 3 before Bob?
@@kylehoulihan3875 Ride the Lightning, Master and And Justice are 3 of the greatest albums of all time in any genre of music and they were from the same band and in a row, even after the death of Cliff. I have been a Metallica fan since those early days and love many styles of music but the appreciation for those absolute prime years is there forever
They improved from the point of not getting stuck and dying, just adapting.
I'm listening to the full episode right now. Great to see Bob doing well.
Where at? Spotify or?
Bob Rock was the 5th member of Metallica.
Wanna see bob rock do 1 more album with Metallica
With their current mentality, it would be a second black album, and that could only go two ways: best album of the band, or worst album ever. And you know Metallica obsessed fans will start complaining because they want them to release And Justice For All over and over.
@@fatimapalacios2292 fair point
@@fatimapalacios2292Bob Rock just said a second Black album can't be made
Legendary bob rock🎉🎉🎉
wow a great wrestler and producer !
❤Chris love u
I Still Burn is awesome!
Jericho is such a busy, busy guy for his age...
Bob Rock respect 🤘🇷🇺
Holy shit I haven’t seen Bob Rock in 20+ years… yeah… he got the grandpa look now.
You mean grandma look 😂 but seriously, much respect to BR
The other guy's name is Mr Flemming Ramussen. 3 of the best metallica's albums, is because of him. Black album is so comercial with a great sound
I've always wondered if Metallica made the Black album or any of their previous albums today using today's technology would it have sounded better or taken as long to do?? Or on the reverse side suppose 72 Seasons were recorded 30 years ago would it have sounded as good as it does today??
Hi 👋🙏
Chris Jericho can never beat “The Ring General.”
I think James' first ballads were Fade to Black, Sanitarium, and One. I don't think his vocals on Black Album were any more refined or commercial sounding then those songs. The big difference is that Nothing Else Matters had no heavy parts to balance out the more pop sounding vocals.
From the thumbnail I thought that was Joe Elliott 😂
I thought Jericho didn’t like the Black album (as mentioned in his book)
he doesn't but he understands the change of direction and respects that musically. Did you thought he would interview Bob saying "That album was shit, ya hear?!"
He maybe didnt at first but he likes loads so
Peace brother can i try this dress on.....James Hetfield to Bob Rock
Ahem "Enemy" is better, so putting Austin over cool man, Sabu and you I don't think I've ever seen it fans will dig nice
First?
What a tough guy I am 😂
Bob Rock was a blessing in the beginning but he almost broke Metallica by the time they released St. Anger.
Imo, it was the band's firm decision to head into that direction which of course was a lot of misses than hits when they released it. Lars had made it clear to always challenge the fans over the years. St. Anger has a few songs that I like, be it Frantic, Dirty Window, St Anger and Shoot Me Again. Honestly, watching the St.Anger video as a kid is what got me into Metallica, lol. Bob was there acting as the producer and advisor for the most part.
Tom werman and bob rock both said sixx sucks and didnt play on the records. I guess $$$ and or a lawsuit got to them.
Hypocrites.
Nikki sixx is the worst bass player in rock history
Fozzy is the vanilla ice of metal just one good song that’s it an that’s what fozzy is known for 1 hit wonder as a metal fan it’s a disrespect to call themselves a metal band the big 4 is metal sabbath metal Motörhead an so on fozzy is a pro wrestling band only people that listen is aew fans Jericho sucks
