Good morning John! I’m glad you’ve met Mary and hope that the two of you will spend lots of time together sailing and working on the new mission of finding a suitable vessel for the grand passage to Scotland eventually.
Regarding the wet deck, you asked for comments. I would think that the easiest and quickest way would be to cut the suspected section open right away. It will dry a lot faster, and you will also be able to assess/fix the damage under the fibreglass.
Great that you will find some work to finance your expenses and your dream of a slightly bigger vessel. Good luck with this, and all the rest! Best wishes, Christofer

As for your soft deck I think it would be easier to remove the fittings and cut the fiberglass skin where the deck is soft and scoop out the compost. Let it dry thoroughly and replacing that with balsa (you can buy the balsa sheets with small cuts and in them and a mesh on one side so they more or less contour the shape of the deck), brush some epoxy on the dried area and on the balsa, put the balsa in the dried area, brush more epoxy on the underside of the cut fiberglass skin adjust the skin back on the deck put some wax paper over it all and and a nice heavy bag of of sand over it all and let it cure. Later on you can do roll some Kiwi grip non-skid over it all, and " Bob's your uncle" 🙂

    TRANSPORTING GROCERIES, ETC.
When I was in grad school in 1980-82, I had a trusty, heavy-duty yellow Schwinn bike. With "saddle" baskets on either side of the rear wheel thing. The store was in town down a steep hill from my cottage, which was on the college grounds. That's how I got my food and necessaries for two years. The challenge was that that "steep hill" had an UP! But I was young and fit and it was all part of the experience.
As for the deck problem, one thing I've noticed is that there is a lot of collective knowledge, and folks love to share that to help a guy fix problems. Good luck and y'all who know about this problem, let John know.

An S&S is like buying a couple of MGB classic cars not a cruising boat.

well, some boats are built to be enjoyed day sailing or sailing to the next marina.
Some of those are built better than others.
But mostly these are built for you to quickly get to safe harbor when the sailing gets rough, nothing more.
A cruising boat will allow you to weather storms for days so you can get to your destination instead of running for shelter.
Where is that in the middle of the ocean? So, consider that poring $$ into a day sailor quickly becomes a losing proposition. Look at Bob Perry, or William Crealock designs and construction. (and others). These boats are worth investing into because they were built and designed with considerations. Cut ten feet off a "price boat" and look into a decent design with a quality builder. To me the sweet spot is around 32 -36ft.
      Cheer.

The problem with Canoe Cove is that they have limited liveaboard spaces and a lengthy waiting list. I lived on my boat at the dock there for 3 months while renovating my boat. I think they tolerated it because I was spending a ton of money in their marine supply shop. Another point to remember is that Canoe Cove requires that you register your business with them and you must have insurance that protects them from law suits. Hopefully you can just stay under the radar.

Use something absorbent like puppy pads, your wicker the water out. If it’s really nice & sunny let the sun do its work & at night cover with the pads bin bags can be used to protect from the wet elements. Once really nice & dry look at epoxy the whole wet area by drill holes on said area syringe epoxy. Glass out areas if need more strength.

The plan has always been to get to Scotland and that is Mary’s goal too. She is from Clan Cameron, I am Fraser, and my Mother is McLean. All three clans exist along the Inverness valley side by side! Mary had work on a schooner off the coast of Mexico when she was younger. She has sailed!
