  • In this episode of the podcast I speak with developmental and synthetic biologist Michael Levin from Tufts University. Michael is a director of the Allen Discovery Center at Tufts University and Tufts Center for Regenerative and Developmental Biology. He is also co-director of the Institute for Computationally Designed Organisms.
We discuss the way that organisms grow and regenerate. In particular - how does the large scale structure of our bodies form (the size, shape, arrangement of all the organs)? Michael and his colleagues are learning how to read, and overwrite the bodies bioelectrical signaling, which controls the way we develop. What unfolds is a story about building two headed organisms, re-growing the legs and other organs of frogs, and the dream of one day curing cancer, reverse aging, and the cure for all current medical conditions with the exception of infectious disease. The story also touches on the definition of life and intelligence, and how the world might look once we are able to design our own organisms.

One of the most exciting developments in modern science imo. Always a pleasure to listen to Michael, such an intelligent dude. Great balance between empiricism and speculation
Also great questions, enjoyed every bit of it. Thank you!

Glad you enjoyed it! :) Its really fantastic stuff. I had so many questions after the interview that Michael should be coming back on again in a couple of months!

Bio-science is the up and coming thing, with tons of research to be done aided by theory, of course. Physics has become a floppy floundering fish out of water. I see interdisciplinary pursuits yielding the most progress in the future.

Quantum computing is exploding, and cosmology is pretty exciting at the moment with multimessenger experiments really taking off. Don't rule out the floppy fish just yet :).
But I have to agree with you - what is starting to happen in biology and medicine is really out of this world...

Great questions. Cleared up some confusion I had from other interviews he’s done.

Speaking of escapes, Professor Levin brings to mind the British cousin of Tzar Nicolas II: King George V.

We don't have the wisdom to wield such power.

That is yet to be seen. Like the afterlife. We can only speculate and pray we don't mess up on our paths.

I don't think your concern is wrong, but it is severely lacking in perspective.

Who programmed these machines is a logical first thought that comes to mind.
This has been the long-standing argument against darwin or even the more modern evolutionist like Dawkins.
So is this a re definition again?
If your my age its hard to keep up with what is meant by evolution when its context is all over the place.
Revolving triangles corner to corner isnt evolving. The etymological corruption has always hurt this theory with general public outside in the real world.
