*I never thought I would see the day the Key Bridge is gone. I am born & raised in Baltimore & I still cannot wrap my head around the Key Bridge being gone from a collapse. I drove over that bridge thousands of times, sometimes up to 4 crossings in one day for work. I live right on the Stoney Creek, so I can see the Key Bridge if I walk a couple hundred feet down to the bank of Stoney Creek.*

I only saw the bridge as a child whenever I'd go with my dad over the road. Crossing it at least once a week for an entire summer. I never got to see it as an adult, and now I never will. Strange how us humans get weird attachments to inanimate objects.

Thank you Brandon for this update on the key bridge praying for all the workers that they can get this steel off of this vessel so we can get vessels up and running again.
Still praying for those who are in that order the workers who were on the bridge that morning when this terrible accident happened one of the workers live down the street where my sister lives in Glen Burnie praying for the wife the children did every need for that family and other families will be met that only God is the one can give comfort at this time.

The Key Bridge fragility woke many of us up to how significant shipping is to our lives, and your channel provides the information of which we should be aware. Thank you!
it SHOULD wake people up to the laziness and apathy people have concerning the LACK of upgrading in safety around infrastructure. This bridge was woefully unprotected to the dangers of today's super cargo ships, and our 'legislators' do everything possible to cut spending and give more tax breaks to the rich.
@@ThatOpalGuy the shipping industry happens to interest me however the extent of infrastructure is too vast for most people to comprehend let alone worry about. It is easy to blame legislators (I do it frequently myself.) Like their constituents they tend to react (and sometimes overreact) to squeaky wheels. Let's look for solutions first and start the necessary repairs. I'm sure there will be plenty of time to assign blame and responsibility after the work is completed, or at least well underway.
Maybe they can build an underwater halfpipe leading into and out of the large bridge channels... a halfpipe that funnels stray ships back into the channel instead of hitting the bridge supports. They could grow oysters on the halfpipe. That way, no matter how shoddy the ships, or how drunk and/or blind the captain and pilot are, it won't matter.
Just kidding. I mean, if you'd allocated 100 billion dollars to "infrastructure" before this crash happened... how much of that would've gone to "reinforcing bridges against stray container ships"?.. 0%? I think a politician would've been lambasted for wasting taxpayer money. The, after the crash, people ask why nobody spent big money to prepare for this scenario. It was a no-win situation for the appropriations people.
@GizzyDillespee I pity the fool appropristions authority which doesn't take the hint and build adequate dolphins to protect theirbbridge, which then sustains a hit and damage/collapse. They had the Sunshine Bridge and Key Bridge as warnings. And there's no telling what, if anything, came out of Joe's infrastructure plans.

If watching your presentations on all aspects of shipping would earn me 3 credits at Campbell University, I would enroll in your class today. During my 7 years of university education, I find it difficult to remember any professor (some being nation experts in their field) who come close to your presentation skills and the ability to transfer information in an understandable manner.

Excellent reporting. Both the Navy and Coast Guard are having trouble building, maintaining, and crewing ships. I agree the death of domestic ship building and repair is a serious national issue. The other reason is the over focus on post 911 style military ops. The Coast Guard has lost capability in marine safety, inspections, and investigations. I did the accident investigation at MSO Paducah, not the NTSB. That report was pathetic. NTSB lacks the experience and understanding of whole ship and barge transportation sector. Mission 11 has really become mission 11.5 and is headed to 12. I really appreciate your focused reporting into shipping, ships and the maritime industry as an employer and a place of employment. These areas would be something barely seen off in the mist.

On an unrelated news, Indian navy rescued 23 Pakistani crews of an Iranian fishing boat from Somalian pirates, forcing them to surrender using MARCOS on Arabian sea. No injuries reported.

The US gov is going into the ship building business? I can already see how well this will go.
PS it is not just building ships. You need upstream industries to support it, or else you can never compete.
I first found Sal's channel while looking for more information about the Houthi attacks on the ships in the Red Sea back when that mess all started, so I am fairly new, and man was it a blessing. I follow more than 300 channels here on YT because I keep up with the geopolitical/economic/military aspect of the World and hands down, no lie, this is the #1 channel I look forward to getting a notification from and the insight and knowledgeable perspective given is like a gold miner shouting "Eureka". My only regret is that I did not find it sooner back during the Wuhan virus pandemic, but, better late than never. 😎
FYI, I was booked on the Crystal Symphony from Mumbai to Athens and it was cancelled several weeks ago. Once things got hot in the Red Sea I knew Crystal was going to drop that leg. I also knew it had to get to Athens because it was showing the following cruises were still on and they were selling space. Like you, I was following the ship after departing Mumbai and noticed it had turned it's AIS off and then suddenly appeared past Jeddah. Looks like it will make it on time.

Besides learning carpentry, electrician, ropes, fishing etc. this channel opened up a whole different world. Never really thought at all about the shipping world lane with exception to history, shipping incidents and exploration.

Good video Sal. Sadly we have fallen asleep at the manufacturing wheel - along with so many other industries. I work for a company that interfaces with FMM and it's a sad state of affairs.
The other thought I had was, is this part of the government's plan to weaken the US Navy? I know we're way off of a 600 ship Navy but this rebuilding effort has to start 10 years ago.

I'm interested in the up tick in shipping rounding South Africa. Given the choke points in the Red Sea and the Panama Canal, I wonder whether there's a similar bump in shipping 'round the Horn or through the Magellan Straits. My guess would be the only shipping going this way would be shipping into.or out of South American ports. But again, that's only a guess.

I'm surprised the navy and the reserves aren't more involved when it comes to ship inspections, you would think as well as the help that they would be they would get great insight and learning opportunity from it!
i stumbled on this channel a few years ago during the deep-water incident and have been super impress by Sal, his no BS info and straight up knowledge of everything maritime related. The Ford Class carriers take longer to build because the Navy changes what they want on every ship. They also keep updating the technology that is provided.
This is typical of our government. I worked on nuclear power plant construction in the 70's and 80's. The main reason for nuclear power's high cost is the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's constant meddling in design.

I agree with you on the unified command. I worked for the state of California, where we did NIMS. It is a top down command structure. There is an Incident commander who is in command of the incident. He then delegates authority to the different agencies to perform specific tasks. He leaves them to their command structure within their respective agencies. I was part of the DOT, called Caltrans. The IC had the District Director from Caltrans on his staff. If there needed to be roads closed the IC would tell the Caltrans Director and they would make it happen within their command structure. From my limited experience, education and knowledge in the matter, this system looks to be a better way to do business, than the Unified structure. What say you?
Yes fewer commitees and just do as your told, make your own decisions and get on with it. Worked for me at sea. In meetings there is more said than done.
If India has over 1500 registered Motor Vessels, how come the Coast Guard did not ever inspect one? A ship is a physical object, the crew is responsible for getting/keeping it in safe and recommend way. Thanks for the videos!
