a simple weaver's knot like that won't slip in the example simply because it's staple yarn. try that with heavy denier filament polyester or nylon and it won't hold.

Then you tie a barrel knot as in tyre cord
Steam driven looms always interested me. No dropwires..What shut the loom off if an end broke? (Warp thread)
I think there must have been a way to move the belt drive onto an idling pulley, at the loom end. No health and safety back then!
