+Jorge Meneses-Ryan I just found out that a family member on my Grandads side, was killed on the Lusitania. AND a family member on my Nans side had died on the Titanic... crazy stuff what we learn from our ancestry.
@Brandon Timm The passengers ignored the warnings from the German embassy and still sailed into a declared war zone on a British ship that was illegally carrying war munitions for the Western Front.
This is even more an alien atmosphere than space! How utterly fantastic that Divers are able to safely travel to such cold, dark and eerie environments and bring back videos of their adventures amongst the luckless wrecks. The superb narration really takes the viewer along.
This is great because you voiced over your dive perfectly and added photos to clarify what it is we're looking at. So many dive videos are the diver talking through the dive mask while under water making it difficult to understand and then the features being pointed out are also unclear. You're really good at this. Keep it up and thanks for sharing.
Divers at this depth and down there for that length of time have to do decompression stops on the way back up and these waters are so dark. Imagine having to float for 30 mins at a time in pitch black halfway back up to the surface with nothing but an abyss of black in every direction, never sure what might emerge just feet away from you.
I’m fascinated with ship wrecks, especially with White Star Line, but MAN ATE THEY CREEPY AS HELL!!! I wouldn’t be able to dive down to see the ship. I’d be terrified. It’s just so big with so little light....so scary!
Fantastic! Thanks so much for doing this, John and Megan. John, you got some really great footage, considering the conditions. By the way, the diver at 2:19 is Jamie Powell.
Seeing the name Lusitania though obscure near the bow is quite profound.Such a catastrophic loss in 1915.RIP to all who perished on that fateful spring day off the Old Head of Kinsale.
I was in a dive shop and they had a small round glass window mounted in the back wall that was supposedly from the Lusitania. The story was that non other then Bob Hollis brought it up from his dive there. Not for sure if it is true but it sounded good.
Enjoyed the video. Just read Shadow Divers and this video helped visualize the underwater diving I read about even though this clip was for the Lusitania not the book's German sub.
The wreck didnt collapse until they removed chunks of the superstructure and hull in order to try to retrieve artifacts back in the mid 70's untill then it was so intact the funnels were still in place,
What I think is, fishing nets drift around on the sea floor and lots of times one will drift onto a ships wreckage and get stuck. But I have no evidence or proof of that, it’s just what I believe. I also don’t know if fishing nets drift around on the sea floor but I’m just assuming they do
Was there not a dive in 2008 that showed she was carrying a cargo of small arms munitions from the U.S.A.? This was great footage, thanks for uploading and to the divers of course.
If I understand correctly, the ship was in full ahead in an attempt to beach the ship on the nearby Irish coast. They were early and were forced to turn and steam away from the coast as a result which ironically lined them up perfectly for U-20. And after being hit by the torpedo, attempted to turn back. But during the turn back towards the coast they lost the ability to correct (after a reported second muted/dull explosion below deck that likely took out steam pipes and required machinery to steer) and couldn’t correct after overshooting and as a result never had a chance at the beaching plan.
My best friends uncle john Cahill almost died diving this ship,,I was only young at the time but remember visiting him in hospital in Dublin,,,,It would have been around the mid 90s,,,He was testing prototype rebreather tech,,,,And something went wrong,,He came up to quick and got the bends,,There was only 2 decompression chambers in Ireland at the time,,,It took some time to get him to one,,,,He survived but compleatly lost the use of his legs,,

why is the wreck in such a desolate condition? i mean there are ships they laying the same time or longer on the ground of the seas and they are in better condition
There is a controversial the german goverment said that the lusitania was carrying war contraband ie shells and other items they also issued a warning that any ship entering a war zone will be attacked to those who lost their relatives on the ship my deepest sympathy to you
The German government didn't need to say, It was openly shown ON the cargo Manifest that it was carrying shells and munitions and thus was made a valid target, Not to mention the fact that the German government DID warn the Americans that sailing on her was doing so at their own risk, So in my mind my was a valid target and I have the deepest sympathy for the victims of her, But they did so at their own risk.
I'm sure that still to this very day they were threatened to not show any footage of any munitions that may find, as if we don't know exactly what the whole thing was about😢
Yes wrong only one torpedo damage Lusitania i think your thinking about the second blow sound after the torpedo hit it is possible a armory supplies blew
I always have a feeling of enormous tragedy when I see these wrecks. Some many civilian passengers, innocent but with no way to escape or survive the freezing waters, women, children babies, fathers, mothers. In this case, no iceberg but another heartless war and uncaring submarine captain after just another kill.
The wreck of the Lusitania has indeed taken QUITE a beating, not only from the sinking itself but due to a number of other factors. You've got the winter tides, corrosion, the mess with the fishing nets, and lets not forget the Irish Navy in all their wisdom deciding to use the wreck as target practice for their destroyers.
CJCody2006 - The Irish Navy never depth charged the wreck, this was done by the Royal (British) Navy during World War 2 when they believed that German U-Boats would use the wreck as cover. On another point, the Irish Navy has never utilised destroyers or frigates only patrol vessels.
It’s really sad how many people lost their lives on this ship all because we can’t stop killling each other one country or another always has to start a war
RMS Titanic looks way better than the Lusitania that's for sure, even seeing the few images of the 2019 footage the Titanic is in better shape than the Lusitania at the time of this video. So sad!
A couple of things have contributed to Lusitania's disintegration. 1) It settled on its side instead of its keel/upright like the Titanic. When a ship settles on its side like this, it tends to accordion/fold up. This is also happening with the Andrea Doria on the other side of the Atlantic. The superstructure for both ocean liners is pretty much gone now and the hulls are starting to cave in. 2) It's in shallower water which makes the ship more accessible. You don't need to use a sub to visit it; it's within range of scuba gear but the depth is still dangerous and you have to limit your time down there. Nevertheless, that accessibility means a huge number of items have been removed from Lusitania including at least 3 of her 4 propellers. One of those propellers was melted down to make golf clubs! The US has one of the propellers on the grounds of a hotel in Texas, the other remaining propeller is owned by maritime museum in the United Kingdom. 3) The current is very rough and contributes to the decay of that ship. 4) The wreck has been used for target practice by the Royal Navy. They were concerned it might be used as a hiding spot by German u-boats. To discourage this AND to get practice at deploying their weapons, RN vessels did depth charge the Lusitania wreck. 5) I already alluded to this but the easier access to the Lusitania wreck has meant there's been more salvage ON THE SHIP itself. In Titanic's case, most of the items have been removed from the debris field including the "Big Piece" and recovered telemotors. They've taken tons of things from inside the Lusitania including a recovered motion picture (1980s/1990s?) which they found wasn't completely damaged by the water! There are rumors of priceless paintings sealed in lead containers that might still be recoverable.
It only gets worse. Churchill (First Lord of the Admiralty) had information about German vessels approaching with fairly clear intentions, but he didn't do anything about it. The loss of civilian life, including American lives, served as a pretext for America's entry into the war. A similar incident occurred prior to America's entry into the second world war.
@@mudchair16 What was he supposed to do? It was well established that Lusitania’s best defense against any U-boat was her speed as she could outrun one easily. U-20 just so happened to get a really lucky shot on that day.
Some of those artifacts should be recovered and preserved. It's a waste to leave it down there to crumble into nothing. Eventually there will be nothing left of any of the great wrecks. Titanic, Lusitania, Brittanic. It will be like they never existed.
The ship was not going full speed! The captain had it ( commands he received to do so) reduced to 18nohts instead of its 21 The ship had the new turbo propellers that allowed her to be a hard target for submarines! Now for the conspiracy story? It was a 9/11 for the Americans to enter the war! 225 Americans died on that ship! Lots of darkness surrounding that story

Because the wreckage of the Titanic is inconsistent with the design of the Olympic. Nameplate, bridge wing caps, promenade deck windows, grand staircase design, more first-class cabins, and the serial number on her propeller being that of Titanic. The idea that they swapped because Olympic was 'old' is untrue. She was in service for only a year at that point and was actually the more popular sister up until Titanic's sinking.

Diver Chatterton, your presentation is ideal - no exaggerated vocal dramatics, just a plain easily understood conversational voice. Respect.
His narration and insights are fantastic for someone with an interest in ships but no knowledge of diving
Excellent narration and of course footage
Love listening to chatterton narrate his dives.
Really nice, informative and engaging narration for this footage. None of the tropes of modern TV documentaries. Superb.
