I just wanted to check if any of the microscope footage was colour corrected. I think I remember you guys mentioning that this can be done in the editing process for your regular videos, so I wanted to verify how representative this footage is of what we can expect to see when buying your microscope.
The footage has been color-corrected a bit. The original footage is just slightly dimmer and has a slight yellow tint to it. So, we usually boost the brightness a little, and do a bit of white-balancing to make it less yellow. This helps the microbes pop a bit more against the background. You can also achieve this look in-camera by adjusting your white balance and exposure settings.
I recently started my PhD project in the field of ultrastructure biology. I'm using cryogenic electron microscopy and -tomography to look at a certain protein in the bacterial cell wall. A different kind of technology than light microscopy, but at its heart lies that same passion to explore life on the smallest scale. The videos that you produce at Journey to the microcosmos are invariably beautiful and informative, thank you for blessing us with your amazing work!
I remember as a kid and in my early teen years I was fond of microscopes. But the ones I was given…birthday or Xmas presents mainly, were purchased from toy shops. So while the built in objective lenses went to multiple hundred times magnification. The only usable one was usually the lowest magnification 100x one. The others were always so dirty as to be unusable. This one’s obviously a lot better! Crystal clear to 1000x…nice! How the technology and affordability has improved over the last few decades is amazing.
Great video! My parents got me a nice microscope back when I was 10 or 11. I brought back cultures from ponds and swamps near my house and saw some great things. A friend had an older brother who was a pre-med student and he let me use his oil emersion scope. I was in heaven! We are talking the early 1960's, so technology was more primitive. But I think those memories are why I love your videos so much.
I bought this microscope from your merch store last August and I love it. I post shorts as well as longer videos of the cool stuff I see on my UA-cam channel. Thanks for all the work you do.
Day 1 Hank, this is probably the coolest project you have been part of starting. Microcosmos microscopes collecting imaging and training virtual microcosmic world.
I'm usually one to buy something higher-end used ... and then have it sit on a shelf as yet another project to get around to for months or years. Finally decided to pull the trigger on a microscope and yours was as good a choice as any for my hobbyist needs. Turn-key and ready to go. I have some ideas of what I want to look at, but no telling where it will take me once I get going.
I just got a microscope and the whole family just loves it. We went in search for puddles of water to take samples. It was just amazing. My son whose 4 found a bright red spot in the microscope that none of us were able to find. We’re still trying to figure out what it is. We also found rotifers and mosquito larva. The most beautiful was Pediastrum which was very hard to photograph because it kept going in and out of focus(not the micro cosmos microscope btw a cheap one from Amazon.) We just had the best best time comparing our sample to James’ book. It’s almost a field guide.
@@journeytomicro that’s exactly what it was! Thank you! It’s been raining a lot and we’ve been taking all kinds of samples. My son is really good with the microscope. He can get it to focus better than I can. We’ve really enjoyed watching the crazy movement of paramecium. They’ve been the most abundant. We watched one in particular eat and hide, eat and hide for several minutes. Just fascinating. Thank you for inspiring our family. We really and truly have had the most fun. Now it’s not tv shows streaming on our television but the visuals from our own microscope.
HANK! I just read the news 😢 Stay strong mister! You will overcome it! I'm just one of your few hungarian listener, but I hope you gain courage of your audiences support! I'm sure there are plenty or rotifers that you'll be talking about for decades to come :)
Randomly thought of maybe buying a microscope. Typed it in and clicked this video. Amazing video, blew my mind seeing this footage. Very well put together, very informative and certainly passionate. Gonna check your price and hopefully I can afford it. If not will do some more research
More information, tips, and recommendations for recording video through the microscope would be helpful (mounts, cameras, camera settings, phone apps, etc.). The included phone mount is serviceable, but far from ideal.
Love your videos! They have been quite helpful! I just got back into using a microscope since I was a kid- loved doing that! (all I had was an old cheap 300x kids microscope from the '60s) That was about 40 years ago! Lol! I guess you're never too old, right?
This video was fascinating! And I'm not interested in buying a microscope! Hank i loooove your vibe in narrating all of these. Why did we not get the cats name? Very important information! 😂
Ok so... one of my hesitations with starting is about killing the microbes. What do you do with them after you look at them? Is there any saving/returning them or is every microbe i look at doomed to die? I know that James is skilled at saving, storing, and feeding them, but I'm not sure I'm up for that level of involvement...
I built an Openflexure Delta Stage microscope, i need more objectives because I only bought a Zeiss 40x planar. it's a nice one, but I can't look at cool wigglers edit: upgrading for transmission lighting next
I own an Olympus Microscope BH-2 with a Binocular Head. I also own a Fujifilm X3. Where do I get the complete adaptors from the camera to the microscope eyepiece, thank you.
Can you please share what kind of microscope you use to capture such detail up close? I purchased your microscope with the impression I'd be able to capture the same kind of detail or can you recommend one of those inserted cameras or what kind of lens upgrade I can get? The phone doesn't produce the quality I was hoping for, when I purchased this. I have a community of just under 5,000 subscribers and I teach safety and sanitation, so the micro-world is important and I had hopes to share that with my growing community. Trying to get the best out of this microscope or even, upgrade to the type you all film on to produce content so that my material can come alive and people can understand bacteria better. Would appreciate the advice... being that the dust-free cover is on mine right now not being used, out of frustration of capturing what I thought would be the same type of bacteria you catch. I will say I can see stuff with my eye, but it's still too far with the highest magnification lens and what my eyes see, my phone can't if that makes sense.
guys we are trying to buy one but we are completly lost, can you help? it seems that yours are sold out, we are a NGO that works with ecological regeneration, we need help
I think I will decide to buy your microscope. I am very into soil life restauration and would love to show to young people all this beauty!! So I think with you all I am in the right company! ❤ Can you tell me if there are other members of Switzerland? Thank you so much for all your support! Love, Lisbeth
aaaaaaa I had a lovely surprise when I saw Hank and realised I actually knew this voice, heheheh; it's been quite a long time I subscribed so I kind of forgot he was involved in it
I might sound weird but my microscope seems very dull compared to everyone elses footage. I see bright colours with everyone elses videos, but my results are very bland.
Hi guys new sub here. Hope this is not too lomg winded. Twenty years ago I was bitten by the astronomy bug, finally resulting in having a twelve inch dobsonian scope. However age and health have resulted in this scope being used very little. A couple of years ago I decided if I cannot look up too well, lets look down. So I strarted to look at a microscope. End result I bought a Chinese knock off from ebay for $25. OK I know I should have known better. The results were disappointing to say the least. This was last Christmas 2022. Deflated I put it back in the box, too late to return it and regretted my purchase. Hahahahahah this sent me into orbit, try n find me w the telescope
Found life yet?
With your telescope i mean :)
This is my preferred 'version' of Hank. Very laid back with a soothing tone to his voice. My favorite project by far.
Absolutely! Wish every you tube channel had a narrator like this!
Ze Frank has a similar tone and cadence

This is about the coolest thing you could have done by promoting a community behind the product
This microscope is in my future in the next few months, as soon as I get some other things paid off. This will be a great upgrade for me.
So basically, a new series of How to Microscope? I don't have one, and I can't afford another hobby, but I'd still be interested.
👍
How does this channel not have more subscribers ? This is so fascinating 😆
The microscope I ordered was just shipped a few days ago. Getting excited!
Thank you again for this

Thanks, Hank!

Any tips on identifying microbes? At least on a broad level

the majority of microbes you see will be dead within days if not hours in their natural environment.
What type of microscope do you use on this video?
Was it your microscope filming the Keratella 1000x? If not, what microscope was it.
Once I have a place of my own to put it It I'll buy it! Im a Vet Tech who wants to learn more!

Would you be interested in images taken through other branded microscopes?
It would be nice if you disclosed all the specs of the microscope on your website
Very helpful video. Will you be offering a trinocular head option for your microscope?
Can you recommend a camera mount?

First video I saw from you. I subscribed, you narrated very nice an used pictures
Any news on when the microscope will be back in stock?
Thanks I would love to start a channel but where do you get the info that what is the name of the microbes...
Writers Guild of America is awesome 😎
Do I need to stain everything I put under the slides?
did you have a phone adapter to sale ?
What is the price of microscope
$350 USD (sold out at time of writing)
Any alternatives for europe? Rather not pay 115 usd shipping
