    I couldn't watch this whole video. The guy gives the poorest instruction, and I can't believe he let a first-timer on the bike with inappropriate gear. I hope you both got proper instruction by now. Riding is one of the funnest things, but you have to know how to do it right so you can be safe and continue having fun!

      Very true! He has his license and took a class but I have not! Trust me I would never go on the road without one.

    • @LimitedSpectrum
      @LimitedSpectrum 6 років тому +2

      Do you plan on taking the class soon? I did it back when I got my first bike in 2005, and it's the best thing you can do! If you pass the CMSP class, then you can get your license without the riding test, only written.That's pretty handy. I used to practice the drills I learned from that class about once a month to stay sharp. People would make fun of me a little bit for setting up little orange cones in the Vons parking lot and doing all these silly little things, but it's such a great feeling when you can make a U-turn inside of one lane on a Harley!
      But... I moved to L.A. 2 years ago, and my bike is being stored in my dad's garage 300 miles away!

      Try an armored vest instead, something like the Forcefield armored vests (I'm told to stay away Icon vests) and some elbow and knee guards that she can wear over her clothes.
      A good pair of aramid lined pants would probably be advisable and some armored gloves that have padding on the palms.
      A full face snell rated helmet should probably mandatory since the DOT rating seems to be just BS and all it's good for is to meet the legal requirements.

    I rode dirt bikes and four wheelers most of my life. As a lady rider, I started off on a Yamaha SR185 exciter.... nothing exciting about it but very light and easy to handle. We bought it for $200 from my husbands buddy. Rode this for 1-2 weeks and remembering where everything was came back quickly. Next I went to the gsxr 750. Very fun bike and loved to ride it, just uncomfortable for a girl at 5’7”. Didn’t want to ride the sport bike anymore so I rode my husbands harley heritage. Then I purchased my second bike that is an 883. Love my new bike! And also love the fact that I have options on riding the heritage or my 883. 😍😍😍😍 nothing like getting the wind in your hair and singing “born free” by kid rock. Lol the neighbor apparently seen me doing this and I seen them at the gas station and she said love the new bike, and that you sing 😂. Kinda embarrassing that people can hear me singing but they know I’m in love with riding.

      Hey Mari, I'm just curious. From only driving a car to the point of getting to ride your own motorcycle, what did you go through training-wise? Instructed riding, courses, exams? Just a safety riding course? I'm from Norway and curious about how it actually works for a normal person when it comes to getting to ride a motorcycle.

    A lot of people die every year because they make stupid mistakes on motorcycles. Last year, I watched a guy make a fatal mistake combining a bad decision (pass a stopping toy-hauler without knowing what was in front of it), excessive speed, SUV in front of toy-hauler made a perfectly legal left turn into his ranch driveway, biker laid down his bike which them flipped him into the side of the SUV-and the bike smashed into the biker-instant death. When I started chest comprehensions I found out the biker had a flail chest, arms and legs pretzeled, but he did wear a helmet, and that didn't save him.
    The point is that bad decisions and riding do not go hand-in-hand. Take a basic class, then an intermediate class, and finally, an advanced class taught by police motor cop(s). Also, those boots look great, but they should never be worn on a bike except as a pillion.
    Stupid mistakes will kill or maim you, proper gear MIGHT save you. Excessive speed and/or inattentiveness are the primary causes of bike accidents.

    Just a little help: the clutch connects the engine to the transmission. Any time you press the clutch, the engine disconnects from the transmission. That is used to stop the vehicle or to change gears. I wish I could have learned in a HD. I learned in a Honda GC150 Titan (Brazilian).

      A patient teacher, good basic technique, she did LEARN something here.
      And enjoyed having a good experience at her own rythm.
      She did FANTASTIC.
      Next time, she will be more confident and...
      Learn level II: turning.
      *** NEVER PULL THE FRONT BRAKE LEVER ***
      Level III: Shifting...
      The rest is a piece of cake ! And so fun. Enjoy !

    Bike 101 = Can you ride a bicycle? The motorcycle is way too big and heavy for a learner. By 6:00 it is obvious that this guy has no idea how to start off a new rider.
    6:50 -- It is NOT time to start the bike.
    !! You always do up the strap on a helmet if it is on your head even if you are walking in your living room !!
    8:08 you fail as a teacher. First she is not dressed to ride but worse than that she does not know how to stop the motorcycle !!!
    It is clear that UA-cam videos are the worst place to “learn to ride a motorcycle” 99.9% of the time.
    Number one is: Can the person ride a bicycle?
    You need that balance skill first.
    Next you need to know how to stop a motorcycle BEFORE you get the ignition key.
    You NEVER start off a first time person like that. You get them on a 125cc small bike. You DO NOT start the engine EVER - hide the key.
    You need at least 2 people. The new rider after being shown and understand every part and item on the motorcycle - they sit on the motorcycle with 2 feet down always.
    The second person is behind and pushes in a straight line. So when the new rider is ready they yell "go" and the person behind pushes....when the motorcycle is rolling straight ahead the person behind yells "stop". The new rider stops the motorcycle with the rear brake only. You do this over and over maybe 25 times.
    Then next you do the same but instead part 2 is use the front brake only each time. Maybe 25 times.
    Then part 3 is using both brakes equally maybe 25 times.
    A new person is not allowed to start the engine until they know how to stop. And be very comfortable at stopping smoothly. If that is all you do on your first day that is great. With no engine. So they have had the experience of stopping a motorcycle at least 75 times or more with no engine.
    There are hundreds of videos on UA-cam of "fails" of new riders getting on ... starting the engine and the motorcycle races into a fence or wall or something and the person has no clue how to stop the machine.
    If you can't stop a motorcycle with both brakes in a proficient smooth manner you are not allowed to start the engine.
    And two feet down for every stop and two feet up at the same time as soon as the person starts to push. The same when the engine is running some day. I have seen beginners fall over trying to use one leg or the other. One foot means the bike is tilted and unstable.
    That is how new riders crash.
    They must learn to stop in a controllable manner first. New riders should never be put into 'panic' first day situations.
    There is nothing worse than an amateur unqualified motorcycle 'instructor'
    11:00 it is painful to watch this nonsense.
    11:45 "she tipped over the bike" WELL no wonder Bozo that is not a learner motorcycle !!

    • @ebwholesaler
      @ebwholesaler 6 років тому

      Yes Sure
      Went to "Tecnic Motorcycle" school in Montreal.
      One of the best school with a solid reputation.
      We did like you said.
      Just 2 times is enough !
      Not 25 times or a whole day !!!!!!
      Perhaps with a young child, maybe...
      Then we STARTED engine and practiced the... Clutch.

Learn to ride outside in an open area with zero traffic… if she hits the throttle or pops the clutch in this enclosed lot she will crash into the cement walls!!! Guys not too smart…

  • @craigcloud2556
    @craigcloud2556 6 років тому

    Don’t use any throttle.
    Walk the turns
    Feather clutch on straights only
    Repeat until a little more comfortable then do turns on clutch.
    Then start using throttle when comfortable moving on clutch alone.
    Keep front wheel straight when applying brake, but mostly squeeze clutch to stop moving when u feel you’re starting to accelerate. As opposed to using brake when its a little late.
    In other words, try regulating your speed rather than having to use brake because you’re going too fast for your skill level.

  • @Araris
    @Araris 6 років тому

    Unless there was a ton of off-screen training/explaining, this was pretty dangerous for her, and the bike. When training someone to ride, the first thing you go over in detail is not stomping on the front break, then you make them do it a few times so they understand how quickly it stops. Next you train the friction zone. At any time here she could have hit the throttle by accident, panicked and sped herself into a wall. Need proof? check out tons and tons of people doing it on youtube. Careful! but good vid.

    You know who taught me how to ride? No one. I bought a motorcycle and went to the nearest parking lot that was vacant. Got use to the clutch and rode it home 90 miles. Been riding for 20 years and never laid my bike down and never been in a accident. Knock on wood. A lot of it is common sense and don't be afraid and also don't do stupid crap while riding.

    Never teach family or friends nothing. Too invested in them doing good to be impartial. Take her to a real motorcycle class. 200$ here and you get your license after. Plus when she snaggles a bike its not yours.

    should be teaching her on a 650 or 750cc cruiser like a v star or shadow.. sportsters are not as balanced as a smaller bike and smaller bikes have less power so you dont get into to much trouble also the fact that if she wrecks the bike well your only out couple thousand vs 6k or 7k. Also get real boots not yuppie boots like those

    The bike was waaaaay too big and heavy for a brand new learner. Male / female - makes no difference. A very pretty girl on a harley may look good but it was a stupid thing to do and it put her at risk of hurting herself.

  • @wtom1420
    @wtom1420 6 років тому +1

    I'd suggest much more verbal instruction on clutch and brake use. How to stop using the brakes in concert with each other since the front brake accounts for approximately 70% of stopping. How to shift up and down and use of gearing for engine braking. Most important... Counter steering# An 883 Sportster is a good starter bike since the power isn't overwhelming and its pretty light. I think she did pretty well since the on camera instruction was sparse. She should take an MSF course.

So I'm just gonna keep with my MSS course until I feel comfortable to take my bike by myself which i bought last May 2017 for my birthday. Anyway, safe riding girl!! Enjoy!! Keep the vids coming.

      SINEMATIC any of the Harley brand engineer type, or lace up type with flat heels. My favorite are my Durango Tuscan leather bootie it's flat heeled and has great traction for those times when you need control and sure footing. The only time I really wear heels is when I'm not riding my own and I'm on the back of my ole man's bike. You know for looks not function. Also take a safety course class it really teaches you so much and gets you ready for the road. Good riding.

    First thing is to get used to the weight by handling it. Get on and learn the clutch lever, throttle, brake rear, brake front. Use the rear brake first all slow speeds no more than ten MPH. Remember to put your left foot out to hold up the bike before you stop. Remember that the rear brake is the first to apply then the front. Ride it by easing out the clutch. If the throttle is set a little high, it will help. Do this in a straight line forward by easing out clutch then pull it in while reducing throttle then apply brake... do this over and over until you feel comfortable.
