Stanley Fat Max all the way. My buddies make fun of me, but I have been using the same 3 Stanley tape measures for at least 10 years while they seem to buy new ones every year of red and yellow brands
The Stanley Fax Max has an 1/8" cut in the nose of the tape. If a person doesn't realize that fact, it can create all kinds of confusion. Love the video Vince. Very comprehensive. I've used the Fax Max for a lot of years
You're 100% correct. Stop being brand loyal. My Milwaukee tape measure filled up with junk that the blade was dragging into the inside (and getting inside the mechanics via that silly finger brake hole). I got tired of it, so I placed it on top of a tree stump and shot it. I've been using a Harbor Freight HERCULES tape measure since then, I got it on sale for $10, and love it!
Yo Vince! The Milwaukee 25 ft. compact as the overall winner? Ha ha! I have 2 of them. 💪Bought a twin pack of them for $20 during black Friday event a couple years ago. Thanks for all you do. I watched every second of this video. Peace and God be with the Carneglias and all #theverycoolgang. 🙂👍✌️
Update my local hardware store had the Milwaukee compact 30’ for 10 bucks . Great deal not as nice reading as the fat max but not a fat max price . Thanks again Vince
One metric I use when picking a tape measures is how easy it is to grab the hook and pull it out when wearing gloves or hooking onto something with the end of the tape when it is reeled up, after all you have to pull it out to use it, so its ease of use.
@@VCGConstruction thank you for sharing it I will take mine down now since she was as official for you I was just trying to look out to help people out that didn't understand
Those tapes suck. Got one free from a builder we worked with 5 years ago. Marks fade away and edges are razor sharp I cut my finger all the time with that tape. Stanly fatmax is the best and only tape I use 10 years+
The black tape with yellow markings sure looks like no other but mine didn’t even last 2 months under light duty use. I had to replace mine with Milwaukee stud
I had one and I never use it anymore because it has an exposed metal hook that WILL bend when dropped. Any tape measure that has an exposed hook is automatically garbage because on a real jobsite shit happens. Tools get dropped. My Milwaukee 25' has a recessed hook that's totally protected. Love it.
I'm a Nite-eye Shockforce G2 tape user, purely because the neon numbers against the black background is just easier for my eyes. I do like the FatMax and Atomic when using other people's tapes. I will say the Shockforce does have the same issue of the clip sticks below the tape body and is susceptible to damage if you are clumsy.
I just wanted to share some of my knowledge on how tape measures are rated now. As stated, manufacturers use "reach" over "standout" commonly. Reach is actually standout plus 3 feet, the approximate length of an arm. This also explains why the standout tests looked as if it fell short of the ratings. Whenever purchasing, if you're looking at that metric, make sure you check which word they use in their rating.
Hello again, Vince and Vcg Thank you for another Great Video 👍 I guess the question is just how accurate do they measure. If they are off, I would have to get a better measuring tape. Again thank you 👍
If you need such long stand outs, why not just invest in a laser distance measurer? I know you'll still need a tape for certain applications. But an LDM can do so much more and much more quickly.
I had the wide blade and stud and they both had issues with the tape getting twisted and kinks within a couple of months. I just recently bought the tough series and within a day the thing broke so I returned it and the 2nd one a rivet in the hook broke off within a few weeks. I now use a Kobalt at least I know it’s cheap and if they all suck it may as well be cheap to replace.
Stanley fatmax are the best hands down im a cladder and mine get wet all the time and still last a long time. Tried all these over the years and non of them compare to Stanley
I am a big time Milwaukee fan boy. However, I am seriously disappointed with their tape measures. The blades all twist about 12”. This causing them to not stay hooked when I grab an end of a piece of lumber. I have purchased 4 Milwaukee tape measures and they all got twisted. Nome of my Stanley tapes have this problem.
I’d like to see Fastcap tapes included in these. They’re cheap, accurate and easy to read with my middle aged eyes lol. Being a woodworker, mine don’t leave shop much, so they don’t take a ton of abuse. I’d like to see how they’d hold up compared to the others.
One note reach is not same as standout as it adds 3' for the reach of the arm. So to get standout you have to subtract 3' when it says reach. So at 10.1' the Dewalt met it's claim.
Please help me decide between "Bosch GSB 185 li" and "Makita HP333DWYE" which are available in India at approx similar price of 11700 indian Rupee INR (approx 140 US$) GSB 185 is brushless hammer drill on 18v batttery , vs Makita HP333D is a brushed hammer drill on 12v battery Talking to Makita India folks they said DF332DWYE is deprecated and so entry level brushless option from Makita I don't have. Bosch is pretty commonly available in India compared to Makita , so Makita brand is attractive between the two options.
Love Milwaukee's 6'/10m mini tape measure. I have 4? of them. Ones always close by. I 3D print a lot so having metric is awesome. It's really readable compared to competitors. I got a Dewalt and Milwaukee 25' tape measure- there both fine. But I use a laser more than a 25' tape measure.
Own both plus others. Not biased to any brand but i dont like the Milwaukee as much as the DeWalt in these current versions as they seem to wear out quicker (coating) plus rather have a slightly slower retraction to prevent tip damage. But use what tou like. And yes my antique Stanley still works great so will take that over both of these.
Komeleon tapes the only ones to buy now. The discount price on the contractor ones is too good to pass up. Can be found for around $10 on discount. I have one that's 5 years old been in rain, sand, cold and still out performs a fatmax(one of the worst tape measures made)
Watched this, after watching best tape measure by Project Farm. While I was satisfied with the testing he performed, I really enjoyed your readability test. That said everyone talking about Milwaukee and Stanly, I'd suggest watching Project Farms video. While readability is important, as a plumber, standout, and dirt resistance, and tape fading, are really important factors and TLDR Dewalt xp premium was basically flawless, with Stanley not working good as new but still good enough, and Milwaukee not useable anymore. Different crafts call for different tape measures.
I have used all of these. Stanley Fatman is by far the best, dewalt second. I love milwaukee and have almost everything, but their tape measures will cut ya after so long.
tb tape is almost just right, the way the hook sits when its rolled up is too flush, can be a bitch to pull out but otherwise great tape.. good as any anyway
Should have actually performed a high drop test. The plinko board doesn't really give it the impact of a 25 ft plus drop. So your testing is good but incomplete.
Funny enough, the Milwaukee tape measurers have pretty poor reviews on their site. They mainly talk about the locks failing shortly after purchase. All of these are from several months ago, though. Maybe the newer products are better?
Ultimate tape would be a fat max classic with the scale printed on the bottom off the tape and a revamped hook like the lufkin shockforce g2… maybe a fat max nite eye too. Milwaukee compact is trash cluttered to read rusts in a week. The only tape I hate more is the tajima g25 overpriced mid tier tape that broke first time hooking a board.
Exactly for as long as I can remember I was using the power lock I my first upgrade was a Stanley level lock to me it was and then I got a Lufkin Black widow

Milwaukee tapes look nice, unfortunately, they are very resistant to water, dirt, and scratches. Additionally, the retraction speed test is unnecessary because hitting the tape's end after several hundred hits will cause the measuring tape to become uncalibrated. I have owned tapes from Stanley and Dewalt for several years and would not switch them for Milwaukee. If you think otherwise, then do a test by retracting the tape using sandpaper with equal pressure on each measuring tape and then throwing them into water for 24 hours. Because this is comparable to real-life conditions.
Doesn’t matter what you test and most test Stanley’s always outlast second of all who reads the tape from that far out. Some of the test you do are ridiculous.

Fat Max not included? I stopped right there. Take a field trip to a job site!
The fat Max has ascended from testing and became a control
Spot on. Fat Max all the way. I'm a brand loyal Milwaukee guy, but tapes are the exception.
I have all Milwaukee tools but still continue to use the Fat Max
Agreed. I went through a stud and a wide blade pretty quickly. Both blades ripped
Same here. I’m a commercial plumber here in Houston and all I use is Milwaukee hand tools and power tools and fat max
