In the 90s I was a touring bandleader for a couple of different solo artists, and hence I auditioned a LOT of drummers (I'm no drummer, by the way). Even with the insane difficulty of this piece, she looks relaxed and loose, grooving with the beat, her whole body and heart and soul in the music. Whenever I need a lift, I watch Yoyoka.
It’s easy, really. Just have gender reassignment surgery, take medication to become Japanese, splice the drummer-talent gene into your DNA, then step into a nearby time machine. You’ll be all set.

I've heard people talk about how difficult the shuffle intro is, but never understood it until now. This girl is killing everything she plays, but you could tell it was hard for her to capture the groove on this one. Still absolutely amazing. I love watching this kid!
Unfrickinbelievable.... People have no clue on how hard this beat really is unless you are a drummer. For her to be so young and perform this so precisely is absolutely mind-blowing.

@@paulmurray4338 LOL. One of her adult friends that she plays with on occasion, said in an interview, if you make a mistake when she's playing she gives you a little stink look.
Wow...! This is so interesting! You were a little off at the beginning as you were thinking about it too much. But once you went past the chorus that rhythm was much better. I was literally cheering when you found the groove half way through! Good job! That's a very challenging piece for someone so young.
Brian Robertson Yeah, sounded like she was was rushing juuuust a bit at the beginning, but not too badly. When you take her age into account, it’s pretty inspiring!
I've seen this cover dozens of times and every time I see it, I'm just as amazed as the first time I saw it. It actually really opened up my eyes to how technical Toto was.
@Pat McCann yeah, but you don't have to like the music to appreciate the talent. I went down a Toto rabbit hole after seeing this cover, and like you, the music isn't for me. I think I found 1 song that I added to my playlist. Check out the song "falling in between". Sounds kinda like Dream Theater. Most of their songs have cheesy lyrics and that's what turns me away.
Can't imagine how hard this song is to play. Just listen to the base and then try to put in that drum beat to match up. People, including myself have commented you can see her concentrating on this song , no smiles no kidding around. But her technical abilities absolutely shine with this performance. The difficulty of the shuffle with one hand the other doing different cymbal work and the foot work all spot on along with the perfect timing coming out of a pause and into the toms. I think you could pick this performance apart and would be hard pressed to find 1 mistake.....Again, 10 years old ....... Yoyoka, should you ever read this remember It is great to challenge yourself as that is how you improve, but in the end keep it fun. You are an amazing young lady.
So I'm soon to be 39, and I've never been able to play a shuffle like this. Because of this video, I looked up Porcaro's tutorial, which lead me to a tutorial on "fool in the rain" from Bonham. I took some time to figure that one out, and now I'm progressing to Rosanna, and it feels great to finally learn something that's always been a brick wall to me. All thanks to YOYOKA! xD
She's literally a treasure, the stamina of keeping such a wild beat consistent and TIGHT, it's actually insane to watch as a drummer, I've been playing around since she was born and if we're not at the same tier, she's probably better!
0:55 At the decrescendo, she even makes herself smaller; her posture changes completely as she's part of the music. Later, she's sitting up straight, and rocking it!
Yoyoka is an extremely dexterous child with a love for what she's doing... just look at the focus on her face.... remarkable what children can do when that inner drive takes hold.
When I first listened to this, I thought she was just a little off. But I eventually caught up and realized...wrong. She's pretty much dead on with this shuffle. Leave it to Yoyoka to be ahead of my learning curve.
It's not the meter, which is super precise. It's the feel. She's better at balls-out rock than she is with things that require quiet finesse and subtlety. That's the slightly odd difference we hear in there-Porcaro swings and is understated, and she's playing on top of it with surgical precision. But give her 4 or 5 more years and she'll probably out-subtle anyone.
I think people are confused at how she is adding a lot of complexity to an already complex song. It makes it appear out of time at times, but I think it is our heads doing that. This is incredible skill.
She's not adding complexity. She's showing how complex the drum part actually was. Jeff Porcaro's shuffle beat is really hard to get right. The fact the snare is mic'd a little louder makes that stand out, especially the diddles in between beats.
This has become my favorite channel. I find myself watching each video in awe. I’m excited to see where she goes in the future. I’d love to see a Page, Plant, Jones, Yoyoka tribute to Led Zeppelin gig.
Agreed! She is definitely blessed which is bringing joy to people, while the other two comments directed to you, are challenging for sadness. Annnnnnd here comes their moronic rhetoric - WHICH, we'll all ignore. Go ahead, I'm not waiting...............
The drum pattern is known as a "half-time shuffle", and shows "definite jazz influence",[7] featuring ghost notes and derived from the combination of the Purdie shuffle, Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham's shuffle on "Fool in the Rain", and the Bo Diddley beat. The Purdie shuffle can be prominently heard on track "Home at Last" which Jeff Porcaro cited as an influence.
That's not totally correct. The very first time I heard the so called 'Purdie Shuffle' was when Billy Cobham played it as an outro on a Mahavishnu track in the early 70's; he probably heard it somewhere else before - there's nothing new under the sun, it's the interpretation and refinement that colours the groove. This is quite beside the point however as, this kid HAS IT...no doubt - well played.
Robert Dore Robert RamJam is directly citing here Jeff Porcaro himself talking about how he constructed this beat for the song Rosanna. What he has written is pretty much verbatim what Jeff said in an instructional video before his death.
Forrest Hunter I’d say they’re a bunch of cold hearted, musically ignorant, empty husks of people, who have no comprehension of talent and incapable of feeling joy! Y’know, just at a guess 🙂
@Forrest Hunter all I'm saying is alot of parents want to live vicariously through their children and manipulate them into doing things they couldn't, music, sports and such. She obviously has natural ability, I was merely offering an alternative opinion as to why people might thumbs down this.
What makes this girl's style so unique is her use of the double-bass pedal... like she's learned the rudiments on her FEET... the drag... the flamicue... the pedi-diddles! :) I can say one thing, she will be or already is an incredible soccer (fútbol) player!

I wish Jeff were here to see what he wrought. He'd love you. He's been dead many years, but in interviews he foresaw the nascent internet and what a groundbreaking invention it would be. He knew we'd be watching you and other amazing musicians one day from across the world in real time as well as recorded. As you can tell, he was my main hero when I started my journey 40 odd years ago. Miss him terribly.
I miss him too. I tried to follow whatever he played on. Im 64. He and Steve Gadd are my top 2 drumming Favs. I play drums myself and when playing his drums parts, always mimic them exactly as possibe as a testimony to him.

Nice! Was thinking same, wondering what Jeff would've thought. Love his video explaining the origins of this beat.
Well it's not so different showing it to both Steves and David.....
As a 60 year old man, I had not expected a 10 year old Japanese girl to be the person I would one day look up to the most.
it's weird... a ten year old girl had to remind me that music is just heaps of fun...that's why she's so good...she's ten...she ain't thinking too much yet....that useless crap that constantly goes on in your head everyday...you know what I mean...
I know, rite?! She's my hero! Crazy...

Normally she's all smiles and in this she's all business. You can tell this piece has that next level demand and she nails it still.
she is so rock solid, that it sounds like a robot playing drums, but if you do listen she improvises the shuffle the entire way through, and never misses a beat, ever...not one flaw. this is why she is a prodigy. truly extraordinary in every sense of the word
@@treatb09 Are you serious? The entire performance was flawed. She even apologized in the description, saying she "did her best". There are plenty of Rosanna performances on UA-cam showing how a shuffle beat is played properly and this is not one of them. She nails the complex beat many cover drummers miss. I read up on her and like most prodigies, she picks up on things by ear. Even stated she can't read sheet music for the drums. She just listens to the beat. Amazing girl.
In the 90s I was a touring bandleader for a couple of different solo artists, and hence I auditioned a LOT of drummers (I'm no drummer, by the way). This was always the tune I asked for first... which saved me a LOT of time. Many many (otherwise very good) drummers just cannot get this groove down. Hence this performance is just astonishing.
FANTASTIC!!! In 1982, the cassette of this song was playing, full blast, as I drove thru the gate at my USAF base for the last time as a new civilian. Thanks, lady!

Watch Keith and how he plays the drums and his excitement, even mannerisms. Plus, he was and will always be one of the best with Mitchell, Baker, Bonham, N.P., etc. Plus, I want to hear her play a Keith Moon song since his style is very aggressive, pretty damn difficult and just a wild drummer style and I want to see her to master it.
In that order!
The fact that this girl hits with that level of power AND has that sort of groove, truly makes me feel that all the legendary drummers are reincarnated in that one 10-year-old!
The Porcaro shuffle! People have no idea how difficult this is to play for a very experienced drummer! Keep it up! Almost there!

I thought initially she was a little off but when I put on headphones I realized she was spot on the groove and it was just the weird mix. The way she continues the triplet shuffle with just the bass drum and snare while doing a quarter note ride is the best part for me. And those tom fills! Wow...! This is so interesting! You were a little off at the beginning as you were thinking about it too much. But once you went past the chorus that rhythm was much better. Brian Robertson Yeah, sounded like she was was rushing juuuust a bit at the beginning, but not too badly. When you take her age into account, it’s pretty inspiring!
She is absolutely phenomenal!! Jeff would be proud!!
I’ve always loved this song and I didn’t realize how good the drum part was until seeing this little girl jamming. Dig it!
All thanks to YOYOKA! xD

Amazing! This is such a difficult song to play. I've watched a lot of Yoyoka's videos now and I'm blown away by how good this girl is.
Just frigging wow!!!. Gifted and natural. She doesn't really need to concentrate. It's just flows. Fantastic timing for so young.
When I first listened to this, I thought she was just a little off. But I eventually caught up and realized...wrong. She's pretty much dead on with this shuffle. Leave it to Yoyoka to be ahead of my learning curve.
Odd time signatures really make us feel Odd hahaha
It's not the meter, which is super precise. It's the feel. She's better at balls-out rock than she is with things that require quiet finesse and subtlety. That's the slightly odd difference we hear in there-Porcaro swings and is understated, and she's playing on top of it with surgical precision. But give her 4 or 5 more years and she'll probably out-subtle anyone.
I think people are confused at how she is adding a lot of complexity to an already complex song. It makes it appear out of time at times, but I think it is our heads doing that. This is incredible skill.
right?!
She's not adding complexity. She's showing how complex the drum part actually was. Jeff Porcaro's shuffle beat is really hard to get right. The fact the snare is mic'd a little louder makes that stand out, especially the diddles in between beats.
just note that she is actually ghosting the " one" every time she start's the shuffle groove , that is ADDING , and it sounds amazing !
Why anyone would " thumbs down " her playing is beyond me. Fantastic job.
Jealous they can't ever get it right themselves.

I'm nearly in tears of joy to see this young soul enjoy the wonderful gift from GOD.
God never showed up drumming did he?
The same God that gave leukemia to the kid across the street ?
The one person who downvoted this, needs to get some new ears!! Completely brilliant, as always!
Forrest Hunter I’d say they’re a bunch of cold hearted, musically ignorant, empty husks of people, who have no comprehension of talent and incapable of feeling joy! Y’know, just at a guess 🙂
I think the haters probably think her parents forced her into this.
Other "drummers".... Jealousy is an ugly thing.
@Forrest Hunter all I'm saying is alot of parents want to live vicariously through their children and manipulate them into doing things they couldn't, music, sports and such. She obviously has natural ability, I was merely offering an alternative opinion as to why people might thumbs down this.
@Forrest Hunter cool :-)
What makes this girl's style so unique is her use of the double-bass pedal... like she's learned the rudiments on her FEET... the drag... the flamicue... the pedi-diddles! :)
I can say one thing, she will be or already is an incredible soccer (fútbol) player!
Insane skill level. One of the best drummers on the planet already!
