This has to be one of the most talented and beautiful brother-in-law collaborations the music industry has to offer.
Such a great album.
I know you loved Caligula's Horse when you listened to Salt. They just released their new album, Charcoal Grace, today. Its honestly next level. Mute may be the best song Ive ever heard but any of the new songs would be an amazing breakdown to be honest 🤘
I think what you are hearing 90s dance-wise is possibly Insomnia by Faithless which is a track that people think they know but takes an age to hit the ear nugget. This whole intro was always Faithless to me. Arktis is my favourite tho the new operatic story album coming out shortly could take the top spot hopefully.
I’ve actually taught Insomnia to a piano student before. It wasn’t that I was hearing a specific tune and couldn’t place it, it’s just the format with the syncopation is very generic of many 90s trance I’ve heard over the years.
I’d say my favourite of his is probably The Adversary or After. The former being the worst in terms of production, definitely, but when you consider Emperor’s production it’s like a Quincy Jones record lol. The riffs, though, damn…
Ihsahn puts out great stuff, thanks for putting this out for us non-Patreon peons
There are a few songs out that will be on the next album, I think Twice Born is my favorite of the 3 so far.
You should consider reviewing the OST for Outer Wilds. It's beautiful and painful in its composition. A step outside your wheelhouse for sure; but I'd love to see your reaction and hear your comments.
Arktis is my favourite album of Ihsahn, i appreciate this breakdown by someone who can explain me what i'm liking :)
By the way, i just thought, have you ever listened to Be'lakor? If you don't, I think you might like them, given your tastes (plus piano, duh, that was the reason i'm talking about them to you). I think they're a bit underrated in the scene and have not been very active lately, but they kinda fit bands you've shown you like.
Thank you! I've heard of the band but not yet listened to them - been saving them for a Reaction video. A student of mine told me about them - I think they are one of her favourite bands!
This is a bit off topic- but I know you are a huge fan of Opeth and MIkael Akerfelt. I would love to see you analyze one of Mikael's favorite bands, the legendary French band Magma, led by drummer Christian Vander. Mikael brought them to Roadburn. A great entry to the band is this clip, Zombies, from 2005, though the band is active today: ua-cam.com/video/-__nJgsLgAU/v-deo.html. And if you have time for a 32-minute masterpiece, then play Kohntarkosz: ua-cam.com/video/QTucmvIEbbg/v-deo.html
