I DROVE The RAREST Car In The USA *Honda N ONE Premium*

  • When a couple guys offer to drive days out of their way so you can drive the only Honda N One in the USA, you say I'll see you whenever you get here. Jim and Chris drove across half the country so I could make a video with this 2014 Honda N One Premium that will end up in a museum after this trip. The N One is far more functional than you'd think with tons of storage, all the options you need, and it's not fast but it has enough power to live on US roadways. Once they got here we realized the could use a bit of maintenance so we ended up rotating the tires and changing the oil before they headed back out on the road.

This was meant to emulate the old Honda N360 built between 1967 and 1970. I drove one in Okinawa in the early 70s. It was a lot of fun. Red and black two-tone is the coolest color!

I would like to correct some of the information in the video. First, the $10.000 price is incorrect, unless it was used. These cars selll anywhere from 15k to 20k new in Japan. Second, as for the stickers on the windshield - the yellow one in the center is the registration/inspection sticker and you need to get one every 2 years after the first 3 years. The round one is more of a yearly maintenance sticker which is not actually required. Finally, in Japan to own a car, you must show proof of parking and that parking needs to be within 2 km of your home, kei cars are the exception. Btw, I have lived in Japan for 15 years. It is cool to see one of these in the US, nice video.

Owned a 2014 Honda N-Box for a few years. Great city runabouts. There are various rules for kei cars, 660cc max engine size, max 64ps/63hp. Forced induction is fine. Big thing is that there is NO torque limit. So Honda built a new kei engine, the S07A Turbo. Using port & direct injection together with DOHC & 12 valves gives it the max 64ps and somewhere around 30% more torque than other kei engines. These are by no means fast cars but they have noticeably more grunt than any other kei engine and are a lot nicer to drive.

Correction to those stickers: the green oval one is the fuel consumption, and blue oval is the emission. They shows this model has achieved a certain standard within it's class, so a huge minivan may have the same sticker, but doesn't mean this N One consume as much gas as a minivan.

Why limit its market? it would make a great first car for a high school/college kid, someone on a budget, or someone commuting to work on a long drive, and still be able to fit a family of 4 if need be more comfortably then something like a Toyota Corolla/Camry as it is now only with the updates needed to meet NHTSA crash safety standards. If it had any other power source than a normal ICE engine, I think it should be hydrogen, or natural gas which are both cleaner burning, and take about the same amount of time to refuel as normal gas, of which we here in the USA really should be pushing full throttle with a pump or 2 for each at every gas station in the USA.

That blue sticker on the "passenger" side windshield is not an inspection sticker that you might think. It's just a sticker that shows the car passed the inspection by certified mechanic. It's like a sticker you get when you go to the dealership and have them inspect your car.
In Japan there are two types of car inspection. One is called "車検(Shaken)" and it's required by law. It's owner's responsibility and you have to bring the car to certified mechanic shop, inspect the car and pass it every 2 years. The sticker on the center of windshield is "shaken" sticker and it's illegal to drive the car without a valid shaken sticker. Your drivers license will be suspended for up to 6 months if you drive a car with expired shaken sticker.
One more is called "法定点検(houtei-tenken)" and law states that it's also "owner's responsibility". It's the blue "dial" sticker . You have to bring the car to mechanic shop and inspect the car every year. However, it's not illegal to drive it without this inspection. Thus, only 30% of Japanese people bring the car to mechanic shop for this "hotei-tenken" inspection.
This blue sticker is showing the next recommended inspection date.
It says "April of 平成(Heisei) 27".
    Heisei 27 is 2015.
It's saying next recommended inspection date is before April of 2015. So probably this car passed the " hotei-tenken" inspection in April of 2014.
    BTW, now is Reiwa 4, = 2022.
    "tenken" means inspection.

Putting the good tires on the front is an easy way to get in an accident.
When tires are replaced in pairs, the new tires should always be installed on the rear axle, and the partially worn tires should be moved to the front. Driving with new tires on the rear axle can help the vehicle to maintain control on wet roads because the tires with deeper treads are more likely to resist hydroplaning.
When front tires have less tread than the tires on the rear axle, the vehicle is generally considered easier to control, since sliding would likely be the result of an understeer -which is easier for the driver to control by decreasing throttle. If worn tires are placed on the rear axle and a slide occurs, it’s likely the result of an oversteer (where the rear of the vehicle continues to move straight ahead). Oversteering is generally harder to recover from and decreasing throttle may actually amplify the negative effects of the oversteer.

I've always been told if you have marginal tires like this to put the best ones on the back. Even in a FWD car. Thought is if you lose grip/break traction on the front, it'll understeer, you let off the gas, slow down it will catch and grip again. Lose traction on the back in a turn, the car is going to oversteer/spin, A LOT harder to recover from.

    • @denislostinlondon199

The front tyres have to deal with power to the road, so they wear much faster than the rear tyres. Likewise, the front tyres wear faster because the majority of braking is done by the front brakes.
Putting the worn tyres on the rear will get the most miles from the surviving tread.
You should try a session on a skid pan, if you can find one. You get to do slow speed skids in front and rear wheel drive cars. Then you learn how to recover from each type of skid. Lots of fun and a skill for life .

The 70s Series LandCruiser is an old design and probably wouldn't meet North American Car Emissions and Safety Standards. AU tends to be leaned back in both departments. The Honda N-one just doesn't have a class here, its too small for North American Roads, We like our trucks and SUVs that would just annihilate it in a crash. Roads are just different here. @@colinmccarthy831 my comment alluded to replacing the Tacoma with the Hilux. I am aware of how the Hilux used to be sold in the US as the “Toyota Truck” and then the split off that occurred several decades ago.
The modern Hilux rides almost as nice (I’ve driven several), has enough modern creature comforts, and the inside is large enough. It does these things almost as good as a Tacoma, while simultaneously having more play load and towing ability (particularly with the diesel engine option). I’d fork over the cash for a diesel one and keep it forever if I had the opportunity.
I also understand the safety crap that the 70 series wouldn’t pass here, although I’d get rid of much of that. Give the truck a safety rating and then let adults chose if they buy one or not instead of treating everyone like two year olds.
As for emissions, I’d say you are incorrect, and if it didn’t it would be very close and they could make it work. It would probably pass emissions as they have updated the Diesel engine options several times in the last decade for that specific reason in Australia. They even had to make the front wheelbase wider than the rear at one point to fit the newer, emissions laden engine, which actually caused a variety of other issues.
